IndyDenise Posted April 25, 2012 #1 Share Posted April 25, 2012 I will be cruising the Eastern Med. in three weeks aboard Noordam. I have a tipping question..what currency should I use to show appreciation to the crew? Euros or dollars? Does it matter? I am ordering my Euros in the morning and this will decide on my amount. Thanks! Denise
CruiserBruce Posted April 25, 2012 #2 Share Posted April 25, 2012 It doesn't matter. As the ship will be in the Med for quite a while afterwards, the crew can spend Euros. But it is going to cost you to get Euros, so dollars, which will be gladly accepted, is probably the better choice.
Rare kazu Posted April 25, 2012 #3 Share Posted April 25, 2012 The ship bills in US so I will typically tip in US $. :D
RuthC Posted April 25, 2012 #4 Share Posted April 25, 2012 Dollars. They don't get off the ship often enough to spend too much, and there will be European passengers who may tip in Euros. The crew accounts are handled in dollars, so it will be much easier for them to combine funds from all sources that way. Remember, much of their money is sent home. IndyDenise Posted April 26, 2012 Author #7 Share Posted April 26, 2012 Thank you for your replies. I am glad everyone said dollars! The less I have to convert the better off I am . I will make sure to bring extra dollars ( set aside from my casino fund ) to tip! Thanks again! Denise

Thanks! Denise My bank told me to use my ATM card to get Euros as this would be the most economical way.
IndyDenise Posted April 26, 2012 Author #9 Share Posted April 26, 2012 My bank told me to use my ATM card to get Euros as this would be the most economical way ___________________ It's not for me. A family member can convert dollars to euros at the current stock exchange rate ...which is about .08c better than the rate I would get from the ATM. Also, I will not take my ATM card at all with me. If that account is compromised it will be a hassle ( has happened to me before ) . I do not want to come back two weeks later to a mess. If I do need more euros the above family member can get it for me easily. I have a credit card that will also be used.
Krazy Kruizers Posted April 26, 2012 #10 Share Posted April 26, 2012 Dollars for certain.
catl331 Posted April 26, 2012 #11 Share Posted April 26, 2012 Shore excursion guides would definitely prefer Euros, especially since 10 E = $13.32 right now. We have tipped ship crew in Euro when we didn't have $US and they were pleased to get it.

I forgot to consider that I don't pay any foreign transaction or ATM fees so I get the actual rate. I am sure that is why they made that recommendation.
