What to do on at sea days?

Bake in the sun, read a good book, stroll around, workout, chase the wife around, drink a couple of beers, learn a new dance step, sleep in, meet a new friend, most important relax from the everyday rat race.

My husband and I love sea days because there's so much to do. Or nothing at all to do, if that's what you prefer. Let's see. From the Celebrity Daily on our Med cruise here are some of the choices we had on the sea days:

--Star Chefs Cooking Competition (even if you're not a foodie, this one is lots of fun)

--Hot Glass show if you're on the Solstice

--Beyond the Podium Enrichment Lectures. Every sailing has a different lecturer but on the whole they're always interesting

--Gala Brunch on one of the sea days, complete with ice sculptures and amazing pastry creations. A feast for the eyes and palate!

--Food and Wine Pairing hands-on workshop

--Tournaments in the casino, such as Texas Hold 'em

--Detox for Health, Energy and Weight Loss seminar at the fitness center

--Lawn Olympix: Officers vs. Guests Bocce Tournament

--"Heartbeat of the Operation" galley tour

--Destination presentation

and more! Or, like I said, you could sit at the pool and simply relax. Or sit in one of the lounges and listen to live music. Or read a book. Or play a game of Scrabble.

Honestly, your sea day is what you make it but I think they're always great days.

Each day the newsletter will have a long list af varying activities. Ship activities such as trivia, cooking, lectures, bingo, movies, casino, shopping, games, wine tastings, glass blowing, etc. :D

My goodness...we actually book cruises just because they have lots of delightful sea days. On our most recent cruise we had 21 days at sea (including 8 in a row) and loved those days. Guess you could say we have our PhD in doing nothing :). Folks can be very active and social on sea days or they can do more private things such as curling up on a nice deck chair with a good book (or Kindle). For us those days are total relaxation with no pressures. We do not use our cell phone on ships, sometimes do not even bother checking our e-mail for a few days, and love being out of touch with the world!

My husband and I are new to cruising. We will be taking a Med Cruise in November. We plan to workout on the sea days, but what else is there to do?

Thanks,

There is so much to do on the ship every day, nobody should ever be bored. I am a trivia buff and try to do as many games as possible. Last winter on Summit, the entertainment staff told us we were guinea pigs, so to speak, for trying out their new games. One was a Jeopardy format, one was The Price is Right and another was a movie game. I don't see a lot of movies and neither did my teammates, so we sort of bombed out on that one. However, I won the Jeopardy and and my team came in 2nd with TPIR. Passengers are very friendly and even if I go to a trivia event alone, I never have a problem finding a team to join.

In Jan. '11 I was on Summit to the S. Carib. and recognized an entertainment staff member from a previous cruise, but couldn't remember exactly which one. He remembered me and that it was the Mercury Mexican Riviera cruise from '07, FOUR years before! Amazing! I always feel at home on ship and never at a loss for something to do and still have plenty of quiet reading time.

I think people have given you lots of ideas. We were so busy we never got to the gym even though we had planned to! We had a series of watercolor classes on our cruise too, as well as everything else.

I never sleep in, so I'll start the day in the gym or on the running track to burn off the previous days glorious eating experiences. (If you want to run, or even jog, go early because the running track quickly becomes the walking track.) The rest of the day depends on the weather. If it's nice out the day involves DW, me, deck chairs in a quiet area, books, and drinks with as little physical exertion as possible. If it's not nice, then we go to trivia contests, lectures, demonstrations, walk and talk to people, take kitchen tours, attend art auctions (probably not available anymore), etc.

If you're inclined to lie in the sun, then you already know what you're going to do. If you need to keep busy all the time, your daily bulletin will list a bunch of activities and the times they occur.

Bon Voyage

These seem very boring when you're new to cruising, don't they? You may find you like them better than port days! We certainly have, especially on Celebrity.

Things we enjoyed were the wine tastings, the food exhibition (sort of an iron chef competition, and there was a galley tour beforehand), martini tastings, and of course, doing nothing. The ship's activities will be designed around the fact that you might want more to do on days at sea, so keep an eye on your dailies.

Try to have one beer at each bar.

There are always lots of activities run by the cruise ship on sea days. We very seldom do any of them.

Here is my favorite list of things to do on a sea day:

1. This is the most important one: Sleep in and have a slow relaxing morning

2. Have a nice breakfast in the buffet, usually after the rush.

3. Walk up on the upper deck for exercise - I like to do this for at least an hour and hopefully get in around 4 miles. I enjoy the walking, people watching, watching pool activities and enjoying music by the pool as I do this. If walking isn't your thing consider working out in the gym.

4. Enjoy afternoon coffee at the coffee bar - especially nice if you can time this when one of the entertainers are performing there

5. Play card games with cruise friends, or just my DW if sailing with just the two of us.

6. Take a nap

7. Catch afternoon singer/musician performance by pool or aft deck

8. Play or watch trivia session by aft bar (I like to find reasons to sit out there and enjoy the fresh air and sometimes a late afternoon drink or cup of tea)

9. Walk around the ship and take time to enjoy the artwork and beauty of the ship itself. This usually includes following DW into some of the ship's shops.

10. Lose a little money at the casino real fast, thus reminding myself why I don't enjoy gambling

Other things I'd consider if the first 5 didn't use up the whole day:

- finding a nice place to sit and read with a sea view

- Massage at the spa (we used to do this but haven't in a long time)

- swim in the pool or relax in one of the hot tubs

Keep in mind that some of the Med itineraries are very port intensive and when we're sailing those we tend to spend long days on shore and really enjoy the sea days to rest up.

On one of the sea days they'll be a really nice gala brunch buffet which will run from late morning through lunch time.

Usually the last sea day is also the last full day of the cruise and we, unfortunately, usually spend mid afternoon packing so that we'll have time to enjoy all the late afternoon and evening activities.

You may find that the sea days are you favorite days on a cruise and if so you should consider a transatlantic cruise in the future. I'd never recommend a transatlantic cruise for anyone who hasn't found, from experience, that they enjoy the relaxing life of sea days.

Thanks everyone. I think we have a better idea of what to do. We will definitely hit the gym for an hour or two each sea day. My husband will love the Texas Holdum Tournaments. We both will love the glass blowing demonstration and the food competitions. Games are good. I have never acquired a taste for beer and don't do much drinking at all (would rather eat my calories), so we won't be spending any time in the bars. Since we are cruising in November, I don't think we will be sunbathing, but I will bring a bathing suit just in case. We only have three sea days on this cruise, so it sounds like we will have enough to keep busy. Thanks everyone!

I know the lectures have been mentioned, but they can be top notch, not just some travelogue or general info types.

Celebrity has had a number of lecturers from the Smithsonian on board and I loved it. One PhD lectured on Architecture, another on Sea Life, Astronomy, those types. One cruise we had Marlin Fitzwater lecture on the White House, and the same cruise had the former US diplomat for the old Soviet Union...very interesting.

Lectures are usually 45min long and have something to do with the itinerary.

I tried to make a lot of those....but then there are all the other things people listed such as relaxng and chasing the wife around (well, me chasing My wife, not somebody elses!), and I would suddenly realize I missed a lecture. We would have all kinds of plans after reading the daily, then we'd end up talking to new friends and missing many of the 'planned events'. Oh well, Life At Sea...its tough but somebody has to do it!

When we did a Caribbean cruise this last January, I picked one that had the most At Sea days. I enjoy the ports, but Love the Sea Days!

Karen, even if you don't have the faintest interest in having a drink, you still might like to stop in at the various lounges and bars. There's often live music. On the Solstice we had a flamenco guitarist who played at the Sunset Bar on Deck 15, a classical strings group (cello, violinist, guitarist) who were often at the Passport Bar on Deck 3, and a party band who were often up at the Sky Lounge on Deck 14. These musical groups moved all over the ship. There's absolutely no pressure to order a drink at any of the lounges and bars, either.

Hi We sailed on the Silhouette in June on a 12 day cruise, we were very lucky to have 6 Zumba classes during the cruise, unfortunately The young lady (Valentina) who took the classes has now gone on leave and wasn't sure what ship she would be returning to.

I think I heard that she was the only quailfied Zumba instructor on the Celebrity Fleet.

I really enjoyed the classes although they did get very busy towards the end.

Just remember since you are going to be on such a port intensive

cruise...... Relaxing on a sea day is a really nice thing to do as well:)
