Shadow across the top of the world

Thanks Keith.

After being delayed by BA for 2 hours on the way to Vancouver yesterday, and with no working Entertainment System either, made it onboard at midday.

Amazing, US emigration was empty, had 8 agents fighting over us, so much better than last time through here.

And we have Dashwood. Life is certainly good.

Making our way to Ketchikan presently. Very foggy this morning and it looks cold but I haven't been out yet.

Had a very nice dinner last night in The Restaurant. Duck ragout pasta and maple infused salmon...YUM!:)

There's only 189 pax on board and at Kodiak 50 get off!!! We have more staff than pax.

23 solo passengers!!! That's the most I've ever had on a sailing.

Off to brekky now.

Cheers

Jennifer:)

Great cooking demo this morning with Ricardo Dotti and David Bilsland, who had picked up some seriously interesting ingredients in the Granville Market in Vancouver.

Saw one whale before the fog came back.

On the subject of fresh food/seafood, the ship picked up 380 wild BC oysters yesterday, all of which were consumed at lunch, yummy.

Thanks Jennifer and Silver Spectre for your Shadow posts. Jennifer love that Duck Ragout. Silver Spectre Ricardo and David are a wonderful culinary team, if either Jennifer of you have time please pass Ida and Wes's warm regards along to Ricardo (for Ricardo, Ida says, "saludos cordiales"). Also, did you know that Ricardo is the son of the General Manager on the Cloud Gianni Dotti. WE hope to sail with both of them next year on the Spirit (Ricardo) and the Cloud (Gianni)

In Ketchikan now. This morning I took the Misty Fjords floatplane tour. It was very scenic and on the way back we saw 2 whales. The weather is perfect, nice & sunny.:) No rain so far but don't want to jinx myself.

So far all my meals have been excellent. If u want a copy of the restaurant menu, u have to ask at reception. They no longer hand it out with the Chronicles. So I have asked for it.

Ship is lovely. Enjoying my trip so far.

Just for info, when everyone gets off in Tokyo, there will only be 18!!!! passengers sailing to China. How insane is that?

Cheers

Jennifer

Thanks for your onboard posting. What is it like with so few passengers? Are all of the dining venues open? Twelve months from now we'll be on the Shadow doing the same itinerary-- can't wait.

All the dining venues are open and the ship feels very spacious with so few onboard. The Lampadina bar is not open before dinner though, just after 9:30 for the Casino.

Skipped the tours today but had a really nice wander around Ketchikan. Found chocolate covered dried cherries in the Chocolate shop. Glad that we were not on the Disney Wonder (must be a more appropriate name for that ship). Last time here it rained, so nice for it to be dry all day.

Just run into some rain but have seen 3 whales blowing and breaching outside this evening.

Will pass your best wishes on Wes, and yes we sailed with Gianni on the Cloud this spring so were aware of the relationship.

Have eaten far too much today:D

My chicken dinner tonite was delightful and I can confirm that no feathers were found!

My trivia team came last this arvo....we had to hang our heads in shame!

I won the "guess the mileage" competition yesterday...the first time I've ever participated in it and I won...surely a fluke!

I have now been told that guests are embarking in Tokyo so there will be more than 18 sailing to China.

So far I've only eaten in the dining room but I'll be trying La Terrazza and hopefully Le Champagne. I luv Hot Rocks but it's really too cold for me to eat there.

Cheers

Jennifer

Good to hear about the featherless chicken:-) Have the seas been fairly calm thus far?

It is also interesting to learn that people will be embarking in Tokyo. We will be continuing on to China next year and had not thought about passengers embarking in Tokyo. I'm a bit surprised that there are so few people are on board. Perhaps it is the fear of crossing the Bering Sea???

Just ask for an extra heated rock to put on your chair; that'll keep you nice and toasty! We really loved hot rocks - sorry you'll miss it.

Enjoy the rest of your cruise - wish we were there!

In Juneau, dry this morning but now raining. Missed the trip up to the Glacier this morning as a technical problem reduced the ship to one engine. Limped in here at 12.2 knots, no word yet on whether its fixed.

Slight mistake, the Lampedina is open before dinner, it was just closed the 2 previous nights.

Interesting repair job on the bow of the ship where it creamed the freighter earlier this year, and we have the same captain onboard.

I missed the technical problem with the engine because I was cruising up the Tracey Arm Fjord in a little boat.

We got to the South Sawyer glacier and then to the Sawyer glacier and as we were stopped and looking at it, it managed to calve. It was incredible to see this happen and it create tons of icebergs....wow!

TC2, the seas have been very calm so far.

The Captain has reported that the engine has been fixed. I guess we won't be limping across the Bering Sea afterall.:D

Skagway tomorrow.

Cheers

Jennifer

P.S. Had a nice dinner in La Terrazza tonight. I'm really enjoying the food. I have no complaints whatsoever.

How are the desserts? Anything decadent that you ate or saw?

Skagway was freezing. I did the White Pass railway and then went to see the sled dogs at the Musher Camp. It was really interesting.

I had in room dining tonite...after such a cold day, I decided to hibernate:D

PremiumSuite - there are many lovely desserts but I'm not going near them. I did have a nice piece of cheesecake tonite but if I start on the desserts, I won't stop!

A lovely relaxing sea day tomorrow as we sail towards Kodiak.

Oh yeah, I have the most adorable butler, Allan from Manila. He wants to do so much for me. He's such a sweetie.

Cheers

What do you have scheduled to do in Kodiak? That will be a new port for us. Enjoying your posts very much

TC2, I did have the Fort Abercrombie walk booked but I've had to cancel because I've got a sore foot so now I'll be taking the shuttle into town and just having a look around town.

The weather forecast for tomorrow is rain & cold so that will also dictate what I do.

Another lazy day at sea today, 2 lectures, cooking demo, martini making, bingo (I won a card today) and trivia....we didn't come last today...yay!

Beautiful grilled lamb chops for dinner.

Cheers

Jennifer

Must be like a deserted morgue on that ship with so few passengers.

Hi Jennifer: I've been discussing this sailing on the Regent board (about the oysters, etc.) and some seem to think that the ship has too few passengers. My thought is that there is enough to get good size groups in The Bar for trivia, bingo and cocktails and that reservations in La Terrazza would be easy to obtain. How do you feel about the small passenger load?

I love the food demonstrations Silversea puts on and particularly enjoy David Bilsland. There are probably plenty of passengers attending the demos.

One last question for today, Silver Spectre mentioned that The Lampadina bar was closed at one point. Although we haven't sailed on the Shadow yet, we have sailed on the Whisper and have not heard of this bar. Is it something special or new?

Again, thanks so much for taking the time to post. Jennifer, hope your foot is feeling better.

Jackie
