Port Canaveral looking at Oasis 3

Recommended Posts

That's a rather vague statement that when read in the same breadth as Quantum sound more like he wants an Oasis class to make Pt. Canaveral a port of call. That only works if one leaves from New York (Florida on a Florida cruise would be crazy). It's kind of interesting that he refers to it by capacity rather than labeling it as an Oasis class though. Wonder if he had a reason behind that.

I talked to Royal Caribbean last year about bringing one of their new ships, the Quantum of the Seas, for port-of-calls. That led to discussion about another ship they have on order, a 6,200-passenger ship. There is an opportunity at Port Canaveral for that ship.

How far Canaveral has come. I remember the little geodesic dome and free dirt parking lot for the first cruise ship. I remember the big celebration when Carnival came to town, and the escort out to sea on the first sailing by the Cocoa Beach Yacht Club, consisting of speedboats, fishing boats, jetskis and kayaks.

Wonder how much of that is due to the fairly nearby presence of Orlando theme parks.

I've been hearing the Oasis (class) rumor for over a year. They are most definitely moving forward with improvements to the port, so... time will tell. Nothing will be official until the powers that be make it so.

  • 1 month later...

This morning there was an article in our local paper regarding two new (as yet unnamed) ships coming to Pt. Canaveral if a new terminal is approved.

Looking online for a link to that article I could only find it mentioned briefly HERE. Below is a cut-paste of that:

And Port Canaveral is likely to become home to two new cruise ships if commissioners approve plans to build a new terminal.

According to Port CEO John Walsh, that could mean a half-billion dollar annual boost to the local economy.

Walsh made his comments during a workshop focusing on plans to build a new $80 million cruise terminal and parking garage complex on the south side of the port.

Commissioners are likely to approve the project next month.

The article in the paper indicated that they have been in meetings with 3 cruise lines in Miami recently. Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and NCL were mentioned - but those were not confirmed, only speculation from the paper as I read it.

All the buzz is for nothing. A friend of mine who works for Port Canaveral said there are no currently no plans to homeport an Oasis class ship at PC. They are however, going to build RCCL a new terminal big enough to handle Oasis class, and dredge out the port so they can accomodate. The reason being RCCL wants a FL EaSt Coast port to move Oasis to in case a hurricane or storm is blocked MIami/Port Everglades.

With that said, we all know how things change, and just because thats the plan now doesnt mean it wont change 20 times before it actually happens.

I'm not saying i doubt your friend, but to build RCCL a brand spanking new terminal AND dredge out to accommodate the Oasis "just in case" there might be a hurricane just doesn't seem fiscally realistic.

I personally think they will move one of the bigger ships as soon as all these upgrades are done.

I tend to agree with you. You don't commit to build a new terminal for $80 million and with Royal Caribbean just for use during a Hurricane. No port management would approve that IMO. If the new port is built I see two possible prime tenants, RCCL and or NCL. We know that NCL is building two Breakaway Plus ships and have not announced a home port yet.

A year or two ago during a bad storm, one of Holland America vessels (I think) went to Jacksonville, Florida to avoid bad weather. It sat just in front of the Dames Point bridge at one of the cargo piers. So you don't need a new terminal to do that.

I agree too..........

who is this poster's friend who "works at PC" A ticket agent............customer service seater? Because when you talk to them, they gossip and everyone Ive talked to said they are building the port for an Oasis class.

Besides if you look at the possible ports and the new builds PC makes perfect sense.

You know, I remember reading speculation that Anthem would be home ported in UK, but doesn't RCI reposition most of their ships in the fall? If so, would they put Anthem into PC for the fall/winter season?

Yup...that's the part most people miss when talking about "Home Ports"...

It depends what time of year.

Since when does a Captain drive a ship:rolleyes:

In the Navy, the person who steers the ship while it is in motion is called the driver. While there is only one Master, there is more than one captain on a cruise ship, and the ship's Master decides who drives at different times during the voyage.

Back to Storm's point, Miami makes policy and determines routes and ports- Captains and Masters execute the routes:rolleyes:

Actually I can think of one particular port authority that committed to a new terminal and all the trappings. In this case they did not even have someone in line to use the facility. They were just operating under build it and they will come mentality. That would be Houston! They built a new facility and had no one to occupy it... Carnival used it for about 6 weeks after Hurricane Issac gave Galveston a case of unwelcome urban renewal. Now Princess is lined up to use it, but they are practically paying Princess to come.

Sometime these geniuses that run these places are all too ready to spend someone's $$!

I had a RCI Hotel Director tell me recently that the original Oasis is coming to Port Canaveral when the third one comes on line. Then the Freedom will leave Port Canaveral, leaving Oasis, Explorer and Enchantment. Who knows if he has more accurate info then the shuttle bus driver though! :D
