Theme cruises

We normally book online so we usually just book your basic cruise. I've seen a few posts about theme cruises like a murder mystery cruise or all irish cruise or jazz cruise, but I've never seen them advertised.

 

How or where do you find out about theme cruises so you can book them?

Google the theme cruise you're interested in. In many cases, the theme you're looking for should pop right up. For instance, Google "jazz cruises".

Use google - and then do a lot of research on the cruises that interest you. Not all of the operators who sponsor the specialty cruises are equal - how many have they done and how many participants can make a big difference in the quality of the cruise.

Google is your friend here. There are quite a few Jazz cruises, Blues cruises, etc. These are usually full charter cruises.

And they will cost more than a regular cruise.

We were on the Ruby Princess in January, and once we boarded and started talking to some people at the pool, we discovered that it was a "rock n roll" cruise. Chubby Checker and other artists from that generation were on board doing shows throughout the week. To have access to their shows, you needed to book a special package which was only available through specific travel agents. We saw the musicians throughout the trip, but whatever venue they were in would be closed to "normal" cruise passengers. You could not pay for access once on board.

What lor74 said is correct in most cases, but not all. Some cruise lines will have themes for the entire ship, without having to book with a specific agent. For example, Crystal has Big Band, Broadway and Food and Wine theme cruises that are available to everyone. Celebrity also has theme cruises where anyone can participate.

P&O has several "Strictly Come Dancing" cruises this year, from the BBC show, which seem to be popular.

We've been on a choral singing cruise...."The Really Big Chorus" has a cruise every year where you learn choral pieces and then perform them. There were around 130 singers on our cruise- you need to read music and buy the books before you go. This year I believe it's a river cruise.

There are a variety of cruises with distinctive themes. We have been on cruises with affinity groups which deprive non-members of the use of certain facilities; and the size of the group can informally impose a theme. It does not matter to us if there are rock music groups, country music fans, fundamentalist religious groups of any denomination, gay groups. tax accountants or whatever -- but it does seem inappropriate for the line to fail to advise booking passengers if the group involved will be granted exclusive use of facilities which unaffiliated passengers should be able to expect to be available.
