214fingerman214 Posted September 25, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 25, 2013 Ok, im a newbie and this might be a dumb question. But im going to ask anyway... lol. ive lived in dorm type of facilities, and we always had a courtesy flush rule. Ive seen on youtube videos touring the cabins and theres a sign over toilet that says something like close lid before flushing. .!!!!! So does this mean No courtflushes, will someone get sucked in some how...
shadoweyeone Posted September 25, 2013 #2 Share Posted September 25, 2013 The system works on a strong vacuum system and the force of the water flow is pretty strong, they want you to close the lid first so that you do not get spray outside the bowl. smeyer418 Posted September 25, 2013 #3 Share Posted September 25, 2013 LOL no. but in many ones the flush is behind the seat cover anyway. They use air pressure just like on airplanes. No one would get sucked in but its best to close them anyway(It has to do with spray)...
Rare John Bull Posted September 25, 2013 #4 Share Posted September 25, 2013 The flushing system operates by vacuum, similar to aircraft systems. Sometimes the button's located behind the lid so you have to close the lid in order to push the button, but it's always recommended to close the lid before flushing. This is because several small children are lost on every cruise, when they fail to close the lid & get sucked into the system :D JB :)
OCruisers Posted September 25, 2013 #5 Share Posted September 25, 2013 Best not to do the courtesy flush on cruise ships. LuLu ~~~~

cb at sea Posted September 25, 2013 #7 Share Posted September 25, 2013 Whether on a ship or in your home, the lid should always be closed! When you flush, a "mist" of toilet water is expelled from the toilet.....closing the lid keeps that to a minimum! If your toilet is near your sink (or toothbrush), everything gets covered in that mist! Close the lid!
JustCruiseMe Posted September 25, 2013 #8 Share Posted September 25, 2013 I understand the lid closing thing but it doesn't work all the time because we are on a septic system and go by the wipe twice flush once mantra.

JustCruiseMe Posted September 29, 2013 #20 Share Posted September 29, 2013 How does this interfere with closing the lid before flushing? Because if you are still sitting on it for more wipes you aren't going to stand up, close the lid, flush, open the lid, then sit back down. lol

A2Mich Posted October 3, 2013 #24 Share Posted October 3, 2013 What in the world is a courtesy flush? It's when you're "downloading" and you flush away the evidence midway through the download process so as to offend others with any "objectionable odors."
