Mattress on Balcony?

The pictures of the outdoor beds on the "lux" lines made me chuckle. I got a totally different mental picture, upon reading the original post. It brought to mind the mattresses (and improvised bedding) littering the decks of the Carnival Triumph, on this year's "floating gulag cruise"! :eek:

Why bother taking the mattress out there? The sofa bed is much closer to the balcony and probably more comfy..

We will be cruising in our first cabin with a balcony and thought it would be cool to take the mattress out onto the balcony. Has anyone ever dared do this?

 

I don't think I would recommend moving the mattress. Maybe bring a sleeping bag and sleep on top of the lounger that is probably already on the balcony (depending on the balcony that you are getting).

 

When I travel with one of my friends, I have the beds put together and he gets one of the roll-away beds that he moves around to different places. He has opened that thing up in the walk-in closet and on the balcony many times. It's pretty cool because it folds up and fits behind the curtain during the day. I'm not sure if a regular balcony will be big enough. He used it on JS, GS, and OS balconies and the walk-in closet in the GS.

 

It was pretty funny one morning when he woke up to people staring at him from the ship on the other side of the dock. Needless to say, he started checking to see when we would be docked next to ships after that. hahaha

Remember that if you are going to camp out under the stars there are no bonfires allowed:)

My son likes to bring a sort of thin roll-up hikers' mattress or sleeping pad. It is very light weight. He sleeps on the balcony on that. Don't sleep close to the rail though, because spray from early morning deck cleaning wets that area. Also it might rain.

 

My son really enjoys the nights on the balcony with the sound of waves. He does long hikes in rugged country so he is used to less than luxurious conditions for sleeping.

 

We would never consider taking sofa pillows or mattresses out there. I can see having a blanket to soften up the floor a bit, but truthfully I don't think cruise lines want anything potentially flamable on the balconies.

:) It depends on if you are a member of the balcony club.

That happens to be Residence Sea where the very expensive staterooms are owned as residences (or for rental) by their wealthy owners. Not really a "luxury liner". And certainly a little different than dragging a mattress out of a cruise ship stateroom and flopping it on the balcony deck. ;)

Not cool at all....in the early hours, they wash the ship....you'll get wet! Not to mention the damp, salt air....it will ruin the mattress! And, unless you have an aft balcony, there's no room!

 

So, fall asleep in the chair, but don't take the mattress out there!

Welcome to Cruise Critic. As you can read the more experienced cruisers do not think this is a good idea and with good reasons.

 

We tried sleeping on our loungers (we had a corner AFT) and it gets very hot and muggy at night even when you are in the middle of the Caribbean Sea.

We wanted to do that on one cruise, but by the time we put our grill and fire pit and cooler on the balcony, there just wasn't enough room. Besides, the flapping of the clothes on the line would have kept us awake. :D

 

I apologize for teasing-you probably could take a blow up mattress with you.

How does a 650 foot, 45K ton ship cost $5B to produce? Doesn't seem correct to me at all. Even with the best of everything that's seems high by a factor of 5 to me.

We're talking a delta of $4B to significantly newer, MONSTROUSLY larger, higher technology ships.

 

I'd believe $.5B. Even $1B. Not $5B. It really isn't THAT large of a ship and they could never make money as a business at $5B.

 

It wasn't that long ago that ships of similar size were being cranked out for under $300M. Okay, upgrade the marble, the decor, the food services, etc...at a certain point you just can't spend any more.

We had a couple drag their mattress out onto the balcony last year on Freedom. The were down a deck and a couple of cabins over. Sitting on the balcony, we were "treated" to their.... how shall I put this.... "groans of delight" at "sleeping" under the stars. We and all our neighbors were glad they were "enjoying" each other on their cruise. Well... briefly, after a while we all wished they would go inside and shut the door. But every night they would drag their mattress out and spend the night outside.

Funny! When we did the Ecstasy couple years ago (we get up early, very early and stroll our ship) and we got to the adult area in the aft and there were several people sleeping out there. Sprawled all over loungers fully clothed. You could tell they had spent the whole night out there, the sun was just coming up and they were beginning to stir:rolleyes: Whatever floats your boat!

Fishing all night or on a sail boat in the gulf stream, it was fun sleeping under the stars, but as age changes us, the thought of doing it again is fun, but delusional. But if you are younger go for it without the mattress, please, just do not forget you might find your self in a compromising way on youtube.LOL
