Easter Dates in Britain?

I was looking into going to Highclere in 2014. The 2014 dates will be available in November and the tickets will be available from Easter.

I know some dates are different in Britain , ie Mother's Day.

What are the dates for Easter?

Same as everywhere else.......Sunday April 20th

I could have said 20/4/2014 but that would really have confused you!!! ;)

for 2015 its Sunday 5th April

Thanks for posting this. I was just going to 'google' for Easter 2015 and you saved me the effort. Another reason CC is so great.:)

Easter is a moveable feast, meaning it is not fixed in relation to the civil calendar. Easter Day is celebrated on the same day worldwide.

No, it isn't. There are two ways to calculate the date of Easter and different parts of the church, and therefore the world, sometimes celebrate Easter on different dates. About half of the time the dates come out the same; about half of the time they are different, as much as five weeks adrift.

The Eastern Orthodox Church uses the less well known method and that gives the date of Easter in Greece, Cyprus and Russia.

In 2013 Orthodox Easter was five weeks after Western Easter, in 2014 the dates will be the same, in 2015 Orthodox will be one week later.

None of which impacts the OP travelling to England but can be relevant to people expecting to be in Athens, the Greek Islands or on a Baltic cruise in the spring.

Mothering Sunday (Mother's Day) is three weeks before Easter Day in Britain. Easter follows the normal western calender and will always be the same as in the USA.

Thank you for calling the Sunday between Good Friday and Easter Monday Easter day as correctly Easter Sunday is the Sunday a week after Easter day.

I don't think that is correct.

The Sunday after Easter Sunday was called 'Low Sunday'

Easter Monday has no significance except a public holiday in many (but not all) western cultures.

Easter Sunday to Pentecost Sunday (inclusive) is the 50 days of the 'Easter Season', so check your dates!

Yes, you are absolutely right. Low Sunday is also now Divine Mercy Sunday in the Catholic calendar. But it's NOT Easter Sunday :)

As above, this is not correct. It is the Saturdays that people get confused. Easter Saturday is the one the following weekend, because Easter Week starts on Easter Sunday. The Saturday between Good Friday and Easter Sunday is often incorrectly referred to as Easter Saturday, but it is Holy Saturday in the liturgical calendar.

Thanks for posting this. I am an Orthodox Christian in the US, and our Easter dates are just as your said: the same some years and later other years.

Thank you.

We were on a 12 day British Isles cruise in August. We had a great day in Cork. Loved how there was a band and the Titanic ladies to send us off.

Phabric,

Can you tell me about your excursions on the August British Isles trip? We are in the planning stages now for 2014. Any excursions that were superb? Any that were not? What would you do differently? Thanks! Sharon

Check out our Roll Call on the Caribbean Princess August 16, 2013, post # 2965, it shows all the private tours that members of our Roll Call took.

I would not change any of tours we took. We seem to have the best guide/drivers for each tour, some tours we had more than 1 coach or van and their guide did not seem to be as good as ours. The guide/driver can make the tour.

GUERNSEY - We took the town bus around the island for 2 GBP/pp (every time you exit the bus and get on again, it is another 2 GBP). There is an all day ticket- like a HOHO bus -for 4 GBP/pp. Pay the driver. We took the bus without getting off. We were on the first bus and it was full of Princess passengers. This is a town bus, so the driver is not a guide to explain what you are seeing. Our driver told us a couple of things as we went. It takes over a hour, we stopped for the driver's breaks 2x for about 5 minutes each and you were allowed off for that time. To get to the bus terminal, walk along the water front, passed the church. Ask at the bus terminal or driver, if you want to get off and see something which bus to take. One couple wanted to see the German hospital and the driver told them to get off at the airport stop and take another bus route as ours would be full by the time it would return.

There can be a long line for the return tender so watch your time.

COBH- We used http://www.ecoach.ie. Purchase tickets online, if your ship & date are not listed inquire and they will add. Tickets for Blarney Castle (castle does not take credit cards, ATM available at the Blarney Woolen Mills or order online) and lunch at your own expense. The price does go up, we had a waitlist then they added more coaches. We had 3 coaches from our Roll Call. The coach parks at Blarney Woolen Mill, a short distance from Blarney Castle. The Castle has over 100 stairs, if going to kiss the Blarney stone, goes there first as the line gets very long. Blarney Woolen Mill is an EXCELLENT place to purchase anything. We did not have much time to shop on our tours. We stopped at Kinsale for lunch at your own expense and had time to see the town after.

Be on deck for sail away as Cobh has a band and the Titanic ladies (dressed for the time period) at the dock. There is a Titanic museum at the dock

DUBLIN - We shared a taxi from the dock to Trinity College (about 15 Euro includes tip each way). We were dropped off at the College. I had purchased online tickets for the Book of Kells (saved on the price but not time as you have to be in the same line as everyone else). Get there early as it is crowded as the day goes by. We were there before it opened and it was there was a big crowd and a huge crowd when we left.

Purchased tickets for the HOHO bus http://www.hop-on-hop-off-bus.com or http://www.dublinsightseeing.ie online. Both HOHO buses do the same routes. Stop was a short walk on the left when you leave the College. Some stops people could not get on as the city was crowded with a few ships in.

Purchased tickets for Guinness online (saved money plus time as the pre purchased had their own line). You get a glass of Guinness with your ticket. This is a self guided tour. We had lunch there.

Princess brings on dancers just before sail away. If you miss the live performance they show it many times on the TV.

Princess has a shuttle into Dublin for $8/way (can be purchased onboard or on the coach), I don't know where they drop you off. This is a working dock, there was a trailer with souvenirs.

Others used - http://www.dubintourguide.blogspot.ie, http://www.cruisingexcursions.com

GREENOCK (Glasgow) - One person had booked a 16 passenger coach from http://www.timberbustours.co.uk (a deposit and then full payment was needed). There was another coach from our Roll Call. We left in the morning with a few stops along the way including Stirling Castle ( ticket on your own) with lunch ( at your own expense).

I had reserved, The Hub Café (recommended from Timber Bus and from last year's cruise). They have a set meal for the Tattoo, The meal was very good, everyone enjoyed it. The Hub Café is half way from the beginning of the entrance line for the Edinburgh Castle (only 1 entrance into the Castle) for the Tattoo. We were able to join the line from that point.

I had purchased all 16 Tattoo tickets so we all could sit together. Tickets go on sale Dec. We were in section 12 row N.

Being a van, the driver was able to get very close to the Castle to drop us off and pick up after.

We had a tour guide/driver going and a driver on the return.

The drive from Glasgow to Edinburgh is 1 1/2 hours. We were back on the ship a good 1-1 1/2 hours before the Princess coaches returned.

A few souvenir stalls inside the terminal building, there is nothing else in the area. The stalls were closed when we returned.

Princess brings on dancers and there were 2 shows that night. If you miss the shows, they are repeated many times on the TV.

BELFAST - We used http://www.odysseycoachtours.co.uk, no deposit, cash on day of the tour. We had a 16 passenger van. There were a few 16 passenger vans from our Roll Call.

We stopped along way. At the Giant Causeway, to go to see the Causeway there is a shuttle of 1 GBP each way or you can walk down. Our guide/driver said DO NOT pay to go into the Visitor Center, not worth it.

Our van stopped at a Distillery' gift stop which was close by. A few of the passengers wanted to go on the Rope Bridge, the others waited, small snack bar & bathroom. We then stopped further along to take pictures of the Rope Bridge.

After lunch, at your own expense, we drove along the beautiful coast. We had asked to see Belfast's Murals. Our guide/driver was very proud to be from Belfast so he was kept showing us more and more and we kept reminding him of our time. We even drove through the Belfast's gates. The other tours, did not see as much as we did, it all makes the difference who the guide/driver is. We were the last passengers back on the ship, good thing the owner of the company was there at the dock.

Nothing at the dock.

EDINBURGH - We used http://www.greatscot-tours.com, a deposit was needed with balance in cash on the day. We had a 6 passenger van. Our guide/driver dropped off & picked up very close to Edinburgh Castle. Try to get there before they open as it gets crowded as the day goes. We had purchased tickets online saved GPB and time. Go to the top to see the jewels and work your way down. We spend 1 1/2 hours there.

As there was golfers in our group, we drove to St Andrews famous golf course over 1 hour away. We had time for pictures, souvenir shopping and picked up sandwiches for the drive back.

When we got close to the ship, the driver stopped and gave everyone a couple of shots of different whiskies.

This is a tender port, there was a pub/restaurant, souvenir shop dock side. Princess has an excursion - Edinburgh on your own for $69. Dock side there was a sign - Shuttle for 10GBP (don't know if each way or return). I don't know where Princess' shuttle or the other shuttle drops you off.

Others used - http://www.timberbushtours.co.uk, http://www.cruisingexcursions.com

INVERGORDON - We had http://www.shorexcursions.co.uk., cash on the day. We had 8 passenger van. There were many vans from our Roll Call. Our group wanted the Loch Ness boat ride (extra cost). Our driver dropped us off for the boat ride and picked us up at Urquhart Castle, this is a ruin and is included in the boat ride price. We stopped for lunch at our own expense. We were suppose to stop at Cawdor Castle, we all had said we had seen enough castles so the driver suggested Culloden Battlefield. There is a charge to go in, none of us what to do that so we walked around outside and were given a short talk about the battlefield. There was a couple dress up in costume explaining about the Battlefield.

A couple of souvenir shops at the dock.

LE HAVRE - We used http://www.overlordtour.com., a credit card was needed to hold the reservation only, cash on the day. We had a 8 passenger van. We stopped at a gas station along the way going and returning for a bathroom break. This is a long day but WORTH it. The driver/guide had a book with many pictures and maps to go along with what she was telling us. We stopped many times along the way. Lunch was at our expense. We used many small roads that the Princess coaches could not use.

A small souvenir shop inside the terminal.

When someone posted a tour on our Roll Call, it was filled very fast. Many of our tours were with the same people so it was like travelling with family.

The guide/driver makes all the different. All the tours I picked were highly recommended on Cruise Critic.

If you decide to do Princess tours, reserve when they come out, some fill up fast. The prices sometimes go up.

The casino is not open very often.

This cruise is very tiring as there are not a lot of sea days.

Hope this helps.

Jo (jtamachay) from our Roll Call starting emailing Tumberbush in Sept 2012 and they gave her the price at that time and she was able to reserve the 16 passenger coach. Maybe they have changed the way they do the bookings.

Check your embarkment day Princess Patter, they listed the ship's schedule, I found that a couple of port times had changed from when we had book and Princess never advised us of the changes.

Thanks again for the information. It's quite confusing that Timberbush won't let us book until February. Now we can't decide whether to go forward with our Tattoo ticket purchases in a couple weeks.

If you are going to be in London when the staterooms of Buckingham Palace, it is WORTH going to see. There are two different types of tours, daytime - self guided, or evening, limited number of people, with a guide, champagne at the end, Buckingham Palace souvenir book (we did this one).

You might want to call them to inquiry about making a reservation, mention that the August 21, 2013 was able to reserve in Sept/Oct of 2012.

Thanks, phabric. We have contacted again, and were told that their manager has been out of town for a while. We are hopeful that when manager returns, we can book. We can buy our tickets on the 21st, so sure hope we can get Timberbush booked prior to that date.

Thanks, phabric. We found out that the manager of Timberbush has been out of town, will return next week, so hopefully we will be able to reserve then. Keeping fingers crossed. What stops did your tour make before getting to the Hub and then the Tattoo?

I am not good at remembering (I just enjoy going there) all the names of the places we stopped at. We stopped and walked to see a loch (Lake). We stopped at Stirling Castle, we bought our own tickets. The other coach had their lunch at Stirling Castle. We stopped for lunch at a woolen mill gift shop cafe, some walked into town for lunch, at this place, there was a sheep demonstration going on. Stopped to see Hamish the famous highland cattle. The guide talked the whole time as we were passing places. Most of the time we travelled on small roads.

Our coach was late arriving at port due to an accident on the road so we left late and we arrived around 5:30 in Edinburgh, a full day of sightseeing. We arrived well before our dinner reservation time.

Timberbush or Great Scot can give you an itinerary of their tour and you can always ask if you want to add some place if it is possible. Give them the time you plan on your dinner reservation so they know what time to be in Edinburgh.

Ask The Hub if it is possible to put a hold on a reservation until they have their menu out, give them a rough idea of the number and once the menu you is out, you can do the deposit. They will email you the form for the deposit. I called them with my credit card number and she emailed me a receipt. I again called to pay the final amount. I collected the amount in advance with a tip ( gave cash on the day for the tip).We did it this way so everything was paid for the day, the only thing not paid for that day was tickets for Stirling Castle and lunch, the person doing Timberbush had collected that portion plus the tips for the two drivers.. When I was making inquiries they already had a booking. If I remember, our Roll Call had 2 tables of 16 each and there was another 2 long tables in the room.

Well, we are unable to use Timberbush. Stunned, since they have done for years and are doing others. Heard of any other transport?

"Thank you for all your emails regarding the Tattoo and tour options you

are interested in from Greenock.

We have had several enquiries for the same date and tour and have

reluctantly decided that we cannot accept any of them as we have limited

availability due to our daily scheduled tours from Edinburgh and Glasgow.

We do hope you find another supplier to help you with your Tattoo transfer.

Regards,

Anne"

Check out the Roll Calls for August 2012 on the Caribbean Princess, they might have used a different transportation. You may have to go back many pages to get to 2012. You might want to post on the 2012 Roll Calls, maybe someone from these Roll Calls will see it and reply.
