What can we do in ft. Lauderdale til our flight

Rent a car, there is a free shuttle between Port Everglades and the airport.

Shuttle is only for a couple of rental companies, not for all of them.

Another alternative to renting a car is to take one of the excursions Princess offers for that day. The excursion will drop you off at the airport, but it will be in early afteroon and you will still have hours to go until your flight. Your luggage will be on the excursion bus.

Also, if your airline particpates in the EZCheck program, for $20/person plus any airline luggage charges you can put your main luggage outside your cabin the last evening and next see it at your home airport. Your would still have your carryon items to take care of during the day.

If your airline doesn't participate in EZCheck, you can store your luggage for a fee at Bags to Go (http://www.bagstogo.net) at the airport and explore Fort Lauderdale. See the web site: http://www.sunny.org for things to do.

If your disembarkation day is a Saturday or Sunday, the Sun Trolley operates out of the FLL airport with a free Sun Trolley route from the airport to the visitors center. Check out details (including pick up stops) at http://www.broward.org/Airport/Trans...unTrolley.aspx. According to the website, at the visitors center you can purchase Fort Lauderdale Excursion passes. "The pass includes admission to museums and historic properties, discounts at restaurants and shops, and all-day passage on the free Sun Trolley."

We use the EZ check. It is the Best deal on the cruise. We then rent a car and go to the Hard Rock Casino and win back the cost of the car and the EZ check. They have a lot of food options in a huge food court. We usually cruise Las Olas Blvd and stop for coffee.

It makes things so easy without luggage to lug around.

Southwest DOES participate in EZCheck in FLL. I just used it in November. IMO, it's a godsend.

A couple of years ago I did the ship's excursion to the Everglades and really enjoyed it. I had wanted for a long time to ride in a airboat, which is what the excursion uses. After the excursion we were dropped off at the airport ..... probably about 1PM.

Rent a car and drive to Miami for the day, its 22 miles and a quick trip on the interstate.

We always try and go to the Cuban restaurant Versailles in Little Havana. We were there last Saturday for lunch, its a popular and fun place to eat.

Great Mojitos!! Another good place is Viscaya in Coconut Grove.

Gold Coast car rentals is a local family owned company at the edge of the airport property, they will come and pick you up and take you back to the airport. Reasonable rates too.

We actually like the rental car option, which can be darn near as cheap as storing your bags ($6 per bag). It is possible to rent cars at FLL for less then $30 (sometimes less then $20 if you have a discount code). A car gives you lots of flexibility and you can do whatever seems right at the time and then drop your car in time to catch your flight. If you do want a car it is usually smart to book in advance (usually no obligation) and contact the rental car company to make sure they offer free shuttle service from the port.

I have the same question-different port. We are arriving at San Pedro and our flight out of LAX doesn't leave until 5:00 pm. Any recommendations on what to do and how to do it??
LA is different in that you should plan to be at the airport at least two hours before your flight. LAX is a lot further from the port and LA traffic is horrible, even mid-day so you need to allow 45-60 minutes to get there. That doesn't leave you much time to do something.

One option is to rent a car (Enterprise is, I believe, the only car rental place in San Pedro) and drive south to Huntington Beach or north to Santa Monica to explore and have lunch. Long Beach is very close to the port and has the Aquarium and restaurants.

Just FYI, if you rent a car make sure you get one with GPS. The LA area can be very confusing to drive in. And then there's the traffic. :( I drove up to Long Beach the other day for a 2pm appointment and it wasn't too bad. When I left at 2:30pm, traffic was already getting congested and slowing down to 50-60mph. If I'd left at 3pm, it would be stop and go and by 4pm, a parking lot.

If you and/or your children are tired and none of the above interests you - you can rent a hotel right by the airport for a day rate ($50.00 I think) they will pick you up at the port, take you to the hotel and take you to the airport in time for your flight. Friends of ours did it last March, can't remember which hotel exactly - but it worked well for them and think the hotel even included a couple of drinks each - and there was a good restaurant right next door for them.

We are flying on Alaska Air.

How do I find out if they participate in EZCHECK.

If they do we would have more options than just taking the Princess excursion since our flight doesn't leave until 6pm.

Although people on current cruises can tell you if Alaska Air currently participates, it can change by the time you cruise.

Only onboard will you be able to find out for sure.
