Trivia cheaters?

On a recent Hawaii cruise we visited a couple on the Big Island. They are avid trivia fans and sophisticated cruisers. They made a shocking allegation. They suspect that members of some competing groups use internet-linked handheld devices to learn correct answers.

Are they right?

I hope not...:eek::eek:

We enjoy the trivia also..have won several times when we have our adult kids with us...to us it's all in fun :D

Sad to think some would feel it's that important :(

There are a couple of cheaters we've come to know on Celebrity, and if we know they're on our cruise, we don't bother going. One guy keeps a huge file folder with the answers from previous cruises. Another thing I've seen people do is on a back to back cruise, they keep their papers from the first cruise and use it on the second one because the staff doesn't change the questions very often.

We did Quest on RCI and there were people who CAME with all the necessary items. Sorta spoils it for everyone when folk do that.

The only real solution for this is for the CD/activities staff to change things up more frequently. The downside is that they are already quite busy and this is an additional task.

No doubt there are some. Doesn't matter what the prize, how big or how trivial some folks just have to finish first even in a competition that is meant to be nothing more than some fun. We were at one on the Diamond Princess and the question was asked "what is the only man made object that can be seen from the space station with the naked eye" The couple next to me were in a panic as they thought that they had all of the other answers and this was the final question. I mean they were getting ready to climb the walls. I leaned over and told them it was the Trans Siberian Railway. They wrote it down and were hugely choked with me when they found out it was incorrect and they hadn't won. I didn't win either but I had fun. The true answer which I had down is Palm Island in Dubai. You can beat the cheaters at their own game.

I was playing once & one of the answers didn't quite fit the question, no biggie but one woman totally freaked out, yelling & complaining & insisting on a different question. Credit to the staff who did not reply then calmly went on. The woman went off in a huff. Too bad because the prize was a highlighter!

Hmm....a highlighter! I am so sorry I missed THAT, lol. Truly, are these few who ruin a fun event for all the same ones who think it's ok to cheat through school? My integrity is worth more than anything, but it does ruin the game for everyone. I guess we can't expect the cruise staff to be teachers/disciplinarians to those few who don't wan't to follow the simple rules. A bit sad.

We just went on our first cruise and DH won a SOAS the first time at trivia. It was music trivia and he is extremely good. He would've gotten them all right but he didn't listen to me on one answer! The question was "who was the first person to sell a billion records internationally?"...He said Michael Jackson, I said Elvis...guess who was right? But then I am older than him sooo MJ was more of his genre...lol

When we were at the Motown trivia he didn't win but I really think he did. There was this older man there all pimped out and they didn't check the answers you just yelled them out but this man didn't yell out a lot of correct answers. They just asked "who got x amt correct" etc. I told DH don't worry about it let the man have his prize. I mean he was totally dressed the part in his red suit from head (shaft hat) to toe looking all fly...I MEAN that seriously his outfit was pretty darn cool and it was still lots of fun. I LOVE MOTOWN! It's my fave!

I've have seen people who are outright ridiculous with their seriousness at trivia. I am extremely NON-competitive - so it just boggles my mind that people get so upset if they lose. Often I can tell that people have the answers stored somewhere. As a whole, most groups will get 10-14 out of 20 questions right, and one group will get 20 right every trivia challenge.

Cheating to win at trivia.....Seriously ? That is really pathetic !

Couldn't have said it better myself! We are Aussies, and a few cruises ago, we played with another two Australian couples, one of whom cruises all the time and just has to win. Shame we didn't know that at the time when he asked us to join. The second couple spent all their time writing down the questions in order to remember the answers for next time.

Why bother? Now, we either play alone just for fun, or sit and just listen to the questions and watch all the rivalry and disputes (wearing battle gear is not compulsory, but is recommended!!) or even better - we go for a long walk and avoid trivia completely.

...if true, why not simply go to the cheaters and tell them to stop using it. I would.

Too bad a cruise line doesn't get a big batch of trivia questions and then each CD can get the list and mix it up from cruise to cruise. That way, it's less likely that passengers will hear the same questions unless they cruise all the time. It really isn't hard. I once put together a teachers vs students Hollywood Squares game and used a Jeopardy board game (it was long before the Internet:rolleyes:) to write a set of questions.

Another thing is if there's more than one member from the CD staff at the match, they can circulate around the room to discourage using phones, etc., or folders (if a team is caught, they are ruled ineligible to win prizes at that match).

I remember on my last cruise, I joined a team at the last minute who needed a sixth. We tied for first. We tied the tiebreaker. We barely got beaten out on the second tiebreaker, but weren't offered whatever crap prizes were given. Oh, well.

And wasn't it within the last five or so years that there was a couple who frequented Princess a lot, and would usually win the trivia because of the repeat answers? Then they would remove the autotips from their account and then would give the trivia prizes as tips to their steward and waitstaff.

After passing over this multiple times, curiosity finally won, and I had to open it.

All I can say is that you have to have some serious issues if you feel the need to go through that much effort at cheating to win a trivia cruise game :D

i loved playing trivia but some of the questions were horrible.

i remember 1 that pissed me off, what dont any casinos have in las vegas.

well the answer was skewed cause theres a few answers and they said no to them.

1, windows. 2, floor 13 (except the imperial palace/the quad(just remodeled so i donno if they fixed it)) and 3, clocks.

they didnt accept windows or floor 13 but clocks was the answer? theyre ALL correct. pissed me off!!!!! i didnt argue tho. they gave out drink prizes on ours, not highlighters or key chains lol

I love trivia, and I am a competitive person, but I would never cheat. Unless bringing the king of trivia - my husband with me is cheating.

I think if I saw someone using their cell phone or copying answers from the prior cruise I would talk to them. But then DH would give him his "you're not going to talk to them, are you?" look  and I probably would just sit and fume for about 2 seconds and then get something to eat.

One cruise we joined 2 other couples the first day at trivia.. and won. So we met them the next day too... and won. We had such a great time with them. We didn't win every day of the cruise, but we sat with them every day and really enjoyed it and them.

What good is a hand held device without an internet connection? So...in order to use a tablet/cell phone etc. for each question, the person would be paying for the ship's internet, plus the connection would be so SLOOOWWW that they'd still be on question 1 while the game goes on without them. But, maybe it's worth the effort for one of those coveted key chains or highlighters!:)
