Carnival: Please stop it with the nonstop "Jumbotron" barrage!

Am I the only one who is sick and tired of the nonstop noise from the Jumbotron (or whatever Carnival calls it)?

Yesterday we were pulling into beautiful St. Thomas on a lovely morning - most of the pax were lining the decks, admiring the scenery - and blaring from the Jumbotron was an episode of Everyone Loves Raymond, soundtrack - and laughtrack - blaring at full volume.

Really? Is that necessary? How about the sound of silence so we can appreciate the beauty of the ocean, the scenery?

There was not a single person watching the episode, but many complaining of how intrusive and annoying it was.

Please Carnival, use that stupid thing a little more wisely. (I realize I'm a cranky 50 year old, and it will be used more than I would like - which would be never - but it doesn't have to always be blaring!)

How do others feel on this one?

I haven't been on a ship with one yet, my first will be the Dream in May. I can see that it would be annoying, the music around the pool earlier in the mornings was annoying to me. Did you complain about it to Guest Services or to the Cruise Director on the ship?

We have spoken about this repeatedly and at length

but it falls on deaf ears.

Carnival wants you to have fun, even if it kills you. Or deafens you!

They're going to stuff their noise down your ears, dammit!

I've been out on Lido at 0600 hrs. when I'm the only one around,

and that stupid Noise Machine is going full pelt, catering to absolutely no-one!

You wonder if anyone's in charge!!

Maybe Carnival wants to be tacky and low class! :)

If there was a football game on I bet there would not be a complaint... (the exception to this is if there are 2 different games going at same time and the other game is the one you wanted to watch) i don't watch it and I could careless.. but no complaints from me. Yes at times there will be things on the Jumbtron that someone does not like, now we are coming up to the winter Olympics and the requests are coming in ... are we going to be able to watch them on the jumbotron.

Sorry it bothered you so much but you can not please everyone....

Just another reason that the "Spirit" class and the "Fantasy" class ships are my favorites! NO JUMBOTRON!

I agree 100% that it's ALWAYS too loud, and YES, I'd complain even MORE if there were a football game on! Simply NOT my cup of tea, thank you.

Cannot please everyone? How about pleasing even one person... I have not heard of anyone who thinks that the big screen is not too loud.. In reading the OP post, their real complaint is the volume, with secondary complaint about a 15 yr old tv show... Carnival needs to crank the volume down a little and more people would be fine, even if the program they are showing was not what they wanted..

Speaking of football games. We are sailing the Dream this saturday. I have never been on a ship with a jumbotron and wondered if they will play NFL games on Sunday. They could turn the volume off as far as I am concerned just would like to watch by the pool instead of going inside.

Old sit-com re-runs and Good Morning America blaring in the early morning..... does that really please anyone?

We like Carnival, but there are a few things that leave us shaking our heads, the big screen is one of them.

Now you have.

Just got off the Dream less than a week ago with stops on St. Thomas and St. Maarten. I never found it too loud. Ever.

In fact, in the mornings they had, I believe, the cruise director on some show then the Mike & Mike show and GMA at times. It wasn't loud at all and my hearing is just fine. I had breakfast on the Lido one morning just below a speaker (hanging from the roof of the deck above) and it wasn't loud at all.

I also watched the Alabama and Oklahoma game on the Lido deck until they switched to movie night (which was far more annoying than any volume issues, they did switch back after the boos) and while the volume was up, it wasn't too loud considering the event.

Oh and BTW, I'm not much of a party guy and I'm not one big on noise. On NYE at midnight I was actually in my cabin falling alseep :( Not the way I planned it but my body wanted sleep more than the party. My kids told me the Lido deck was very loud that night :D

Yes, they did for us on the Lido deck Jumbo.

One thing is the Dream is NOT set up well at all for watching sporting events. They have the Lido and then the casino bar (1/2 smoking- 1/2 non-smoking). Otherwise they did set up the Burgundy Lounge one mid-day for the Rose Bowl. You don't have much else.

They also carry ESPN_Caribbean - ? Not regular ESPN (but reg. ESPN 2). I only know this because there was not 1 TV on the ship the carried the Ohio State/Clemson bowl game. The Ohio State fans were going bonkers. I would too. The version of ESPN they carried had on a Dallas Mavericks NBA game that night?

I'm not an older folk but I don't like the giant screens. I think they are a nice idea if the cruise line would play new movies at night or big football games. But when we were on Enchantment of the Seas last year, all they played was Royal Caribbean commercials all day (it's not just Carnival :().

Also the huge screen blocks the view.

OK, I think the current situation is OK and I enjoy it.

I guess that I'm in the minority here because the jumbo screens don't bother me at all. Maybe I just tune them out(?). My only complaint is that the volume wasn't loud enough when they were showing movies on our Breeze cruise last year.

JH just posted on FB that the cruise directors are talking about tif they should show CNN. All comments so far say NO. Im on vacation and don't wanna see that on there. Im ok with music but I don't wanna see old tv shows and news. Im also ok with the movies at night.

The morning time is the only time the Lido big screen volume bothers me. I certainly don't want to hear the news and old tv shows blasting in the early morning hours, especially when there is nobody even out there listening. The OP's description of pulling into St. Thomas yesterday just made me cringe.

The big screen has never really bothered me - if I am not interested I just tune it out. It is also easy to find other, less congested areas of the ship (that also have great views) for peace and solitude. For example, Deck 3 (Conquest class) has the outside walkways with the doors off of the Lobby - a great spot to see the approaching island. Or go forward or aft and find nice outdoor spaces.

That said, I certainly do not cruise for 'Everybody Loves Raymond' and doubt that many people do, and would not mind at all if the screen was used less.

Members of my family love watching the movies up there - so would be disappointed if that were to go.

Why did they throw out CNN? Are they that out of touch?

I have seen John Heald do many things requested by passengers. Find his blog/facebook page and make a suggestion.
