Teen Club - 18 year old

I just want to see if anyone else knows this. Have a teenager who turns 18 the same month we cruise. Can she get into the 15-17 teen room on the Freedom of the Seas?

Yes, I understand that she is now technically 18, but just wanted to see if anyone else has gone through that and what has happened. I know they look at the seapass and stuff, just wasn't sure if the system knows that she just turned 18 or not.

From what I've seen they will not allow her to take part in the Teen Club Activities. We were on Allure in 2012 and they did not let a newly turned 18 yo join in. Maybe you can check on your Roll Call for other kids her age and set up some type of meet and greet for them.

The teen counselors will have a list of who is eligible to be in the teen area so she probably will not be allowed in. Back when my son was in the teen area, one cruise they did not allow anyone over 17 in and the next year they allowed a couple of kids to give up their adult rights to get in. Recently, all the posts I have seen say they are now very strict and are making no exceptions.

Have her go by and see what happens. It won't hurt to ask but I would not get her hopes up.

I searched a lot on this topic before I booked a year ago, because my son dearly loves the teen club and wanted one more stint in there. Everything I found online and from people I spoke with at RCI pretty unanimously said that once he turns 18, that's it. And anecdotally I've been told that it's up to the ship's staff as to whether or not to let someone stay if they turn 18 while on board -- I've read about times an 18yr old was allowed to stay, and I've read about times when the person could no longer be in the teen club. Honestly, that makes more sense -- it doesn't matter if someone was still 17 when they boarded, once they turn 18 they are legally an adult and the liability on the cruise line becomes a whole different ballgame.

I ended up booking our cruise where he turns 18 the day after we get back, just to be safe.:)

If she turns 18 ON the cruise, she will be allowed. Whatever age you are upon boarding is the age they consider you to be for the cruise.

Except if you turn 21. My son turned 21 on Christmas Day. We were on the Freedom and he was at guest relations at 12:01 a.m. to get that new sea pass. LOL

once they are 18 they are no longer allowed in any kids club programing even if still in High school. if she is 18 the day you sail, she's on her own. her age is coded into her seapass card.

then again at 18 she can now enter the casino and the adult only venues.

my son was unhappy when we boarded and he was 18 that he could no longer go however RCCL run a program each evening for 18 to 21s and list it on the cruise compass

He met loads of people his age and they found lots to do and took over the nightclub each evening

So he was very please

My son and his best friend, both 18, just sailed this past summer on the Allure. They met a group of kids their age 18-20ish and had a blast with them every night. They can go anyplace on the ship and do anything, just no alcohol.

They both had an awesome time!

:p

We have the same dilemma. DD turns 18 2 weeks before our thanksgiving cruise. She usually goes to the teen club "mixer" that first night to meet people. Generally has a crowd to hang with the rest of the cruise. The idea that she will have to go to bars to meet people, FREAKS me out! Yesterday I was told, when booking the cruise, that she's not allowed in the teen club (which we already knew), but also that she's only allowed in the bars until 10... doesn't feel right... if the younger teens have activities until 1am, why would the 18-20 crowd only have places to hang out until 10? They are allowed in the casino tho...

Our daughter had just turned 18 (and she looked 15) and they said no. She begged as her brother was in teen club and they said no exceptions they check their ages. It was a rough and she felt left out. if I had known we would have gone a month earlier. They didn't have any 18-20 activities on our cruise we asked. I would take a friend along if at all possible.

...just wasn't sure if the system knows that she just turned 18 or not.

But it doesn't matter how many days she has been 18 - whether she just turned 18 as you say, or she is 364 days at 18. Right? I mean, there is a heckuva difference between a 15 year old and an 18 year old, and for obvious reasons the latter is not permitted in the teen club.

She will find loads to do on the cruise, just as Esmerelda and others have said. You'll all have a blast. :)

You were misinformed - she can be in the clubs until they close - only UNDER 18's must vacate by 10. Bars are not the only place to meet other cruisers. Lots of young men frequent the sports area, particularly the basketball court. The pool area is another good spot. Trivia games are another good meeting place. Seriously, even if she were over 21 it would be exactly the same situation except instead of virgin drinks she could order alcohol but same issue with meeting others her age.

See, that would make MUCH more sense!

18 -20 is a tough age on cruise. Last RCCL cruise 18 yo DD had a tough time meeting people she wanted to hang out with, finally met some nice 20-22 yo's. It seems like it is like that on any of the cruise lines as we have sailed NCL and Carnival. I was disappointed that they did not have a meet and mingle set up for them. Sailing in June DD will be 21 so we will see if it is better.

Luckily my 17 DD and DS twins won't be 18 until a week after we return this time.
