Celebrity Cruises Posted January 29, 2014 #5 Share Posted January 29, 2014 Hi all, Providing our statement: On Wednesday, January 29, 2014, as Celebrity Constellation was sailing back to Port Everglades, Florida, from Cozumel, Mexico, a crew member found a pair of shoes next to the railing on deck 10. A review of the ship’s closed-circuit camera footage observed a person going overboard. The location of the ship at the time the person went overboard was marked on the ship’s Global Positioning System (GPS), and the ship notified the U.S. Coast Guard. The ship was advised by the Coast Guard that they would be assuming control of the search and the ship continued on its journey. The person was identified as a 45-year-old male crew member from Indonesia who was serving as a cook onboard. Celebrity Cruises’ Care Team is providing support to the crew member’s family and friends, and our thoughts and prayers are with them. Celebrity Constellation is sailing a four-night itinerary that departed Port Everglades, on January 25, with port calls to Key West, Florida; and Cozumel, Mexico. TheWren Posted January 29, 2014 #7 Share Posted January 29, 2014 From Coast Guard News : "Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Seventh District command center received a report shortly after 10:30 a.m. from Celebrity Constellation of a crewmember who fell overboard at 2:27 a.m. during a cruise in the Caribbean Sea." Sad that the poor man saw no other way out.

rebeccalouiseagain Posted January 30, 2014 #16 Share Posted January 30, 2014 Sorry but we all know people don't just jump off a cruise ship to go for a moon light swim.
Denny01 Posted January 30, 2014 #17 Share Posted January 30, 2014 How do you know it was a suicide? It stated fell or jumped so let's not jump to conclusions. They left their shoes next to the railing, and as we know, to 'fall' off a ship is more than a bit difficult. About the only way to 'fall' overboard is to be very very drunk and climb up on a railing and fall off. That leaves climbing up and jumping....or getting picked up and thrown over. With that said, it's tough being away from family and in a very different environment. No matter what occurred, someone is lost and ship friends and family suffer. SnowshoeCat Posted January 30, 2014 #21 Share Posted January 30, 2014 Wow. I just got off the ship this morning (I'm at the FLL airport now) and knew nothing about this. And I enjoy walking around the deck at night. So sad for the man and his family.
Boo's Mom Posted January 30, 2014 #22 Share Posted January 30, 2014 I am also just off of the ship. He jumped at 3am. They did not realize he was missing until he did not show up for work later that morning.
