[quote name='sail7seas'][B] When Zuiderdam (the first of the Vista Class ships) joined the fleet, she had exactly that sort of glass cage. It was not popular, was actually pretty disgusting IMO and was removed rather quickly. It did not appear on the sister ships which were subsequently built.

Are you referring to the Oak Room? I assume not as you said not on subsequent ships. Where are you referring to?

I am Not referring to the Oak Room.
I am referring to the glass room which was designated for smoking. It was not on Crows Nest Deck. It was a glass walled room and it was pretty awful.

If you are interested enough, dig out some old photos. :)

Judging by the billions of dollars we have spent for decades, I think there is very much a war on drugs. Heroin, cocoaine, crack, marijuana in most states, ecstasy, and whatever else they pour into their mouths and veins are all illegal. There IS a WAR on Drugs.

Surely you've heard of some of this?

Oh yes, BUT IT IS STILL ON-GOING. There is BIG MONEY in it, or it would be curbed. But then ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION is right up there too.

You CANNOT win a war if you don't do all out battle. They have managed in just a few decades to cut cigarette smokers from 80% of the population to 17%, surely if they wanted to end the drug war, they could.

Look at Colorado, since January 1st, the STATE has made over 21 million dollars in the sale of marijuana. ARE THEY GOING TO STOP IT ANYTIME SOON  DON'T THINK SO.

Happy travels to all!

Agree. So when is HAL going to start selling marijuana; at least in international waters?

If they wanted to, they would have done it long ago, since recreational marijuana is legal in The Netherlands, their flag State.

Of all the recommendations by the anti-smoking crowd on this thread, this compromise seems the most reasonable. While not eliminating second hand smoke altogether, those inhaling the marijuana smoke on their verandas would probably find their anxieties eased substantially.

And may I add...just as HAL has changed the wine policy it is only a matter of time for the smoking policy to change as well....suck it up buttercups;)

Don't forget soda and water, there's alot of money in that as well. Just ask Fenway Park or Yankee Stadium

Sorry Curt; the use of Marijuana & Hashish in the Netherlands is only legal in "controlled environments" i.e. the so-called "Coffee Shops". It is not legal to possess, transport and/or use on the streets

Unlike what some fine folks think, it is not legal to be used onboard HAL ships and is also strictly prohibited onboard by U.S. Customs & Border Patrol who make regular inspections upon the ships returning to U.S. home ports

Change it to what? No cigars on balconies, e-cigs only? HAL did the two step on the wine policy. I don't know what to suck up. You haven't provided any direction CruiseWhere? LOL I'm here all week.

So am I! Try the veal and tip your waitresses.

P.S. That's stale.....think about what you just asked....

I thought about it so I'll ask again. Change it to what? Everyone has their own opinion on what to change. What is you wish? I could read you post and think you want to allow smoking in the cabins again. You do not provide any direction.

Any changes need to cover...

Verandah smoking cigarettes or no cigarettes

verandah smoking cigars or no cigars

Verandah smoking e-cigs or no e-cigs

Casino smoking only when playing or no smoking on certain nights

Having an inside room for smoking or only outside smoking areas

Smoking on the promenade deck at the rail ashtrays or no smoking anywhere on the promenade

E-cigs allowed anywhere or only outside

If HAL is to change its policy it needs to review the smoking threads on CC and provide a comprehensive smoking policy.

During the many years we have sailed HAL, they have changed the smoking policy, incrementally, lots of times. They have no confusion how to do it if they wish to do so. They seem to have confusion about recognizing how out of date their policy is seeing the number of adult smokers in U.S. is now 17%. I don't know the exact number in Canada but suspect it is roughly in a similar range. U.S. and Canadian folks make up a huge percentage of HAL's cruisers.

HAL doesn't need to ask us HOW to change the rules and many of us are eagerly awaiting when they WILL change the rules to ban smoking on verandahs. When that happens, I will never again post I want more change for HAL smoking rules. :) I do not want use of our verandah denied us one more time because of smokers thoughtlessly making it impossible for us to remain outside while they smoke.

I like your approach but then you have radicals such as CruiseWhere who want a cruise in Paradise (LOL). I don`t know what room he is referring to where wine drinkers have to pay...

My dear Quebecois friend, if you have been paying attention to the new rules regarding the wine policy you would have than read that you now can bring on unlimited bottles but with a fee for each bottle....put that in your pipe and smoke it...charge smokers as well!! DUHHH...

I don't really have any point to make but if I did I would preface it with "my dear Upper Canadian friend". :D Sorry, please forgive me. Couldn't help myself. :D

I fully agree there should be a comfortable indoor place for smokers to have their smoke without bothering everyone else. It doesn't have to be fancy or large but has to have excellent ventillation and some comfortable seating.

I do NOT think any steward should be required to enter that smoking section to take drink orders. Anyone who wants a beverage can carry it in with them. NO non-smoker should be required to enter including cleaning staff. Only a smoker should be required to do housekeeping duties.

Non sensible person today denies the risk of second hand smoke.

I also think smokers should have their own area away from everyone else but I don't think it needs to be ventilated. Most smokers think that secondhand smoke is not a problem so why pay for a ventilation system to get rid of it. If they had their own area they could recycle their smoke with each other and not effect the non addicted.
