The last verandah for us until they stop smoking on them...our current cruise with a smoker next door has made it uncomfortable to use the verandah again... So no more verandahs .. Not worth the price diff!

Or you could do a land vacation. Not great to be told where to spend you vacation dollars, is it?

from cruz chic's wine policy post:

Princess seems to be such a good fit for you so why change. For the life of me I don't understand why people insist on making every cruise line into one size fits all. You are so negative about so many things on Hal. Why bother with them?

LOL, like fish in a barrel...

How about no smoking on verandahs during even number hours on even number days and no smoking on verandahs during odd number hours on odd number days.

Happy to see you have so much free time. I will continue to ask Hal to stop smoking on balconies every chance I get. About the second post I don't complain bitterly about everything and how second rate everything is on Hal. Sorry you can't see the difference.

To the OP just talk your government into banning cigarettes alltogether !!

I wish that the Aussie government would ban cigarettes but they won't as they are too addicted to the revenue !!!

Ciao,

Cristiano

Not a very bright idea. If the government banned cigarettes altogether you would then be creating a new element of criminal. Friends and family who smoke would be now be criminals, and there would also be the "dealers" law enforcement would have to deal with.

The days of prohibition is a great example. That's when "mobsters" such as Al Capone came into power. Bootlegging was also a product of prohibition. With the war on drugs already a joke, adding cigarettes to the list only exacerbate things.

Didn't say we would keep going on Celebrity - that was just one thing we did like about it. Wish responders wouldn't keep suggesting that we do that. We definitely prefer HAL for other reasons. Civility is the key!!!

I kept looking for the question of direction you were seeking in your OP. I wasn't sure where you wanted to take the thread. :o

I am a non-smoker who will stand up for my rights for clean air but I have to say that when we sailed on HAL(18 months ago), I encounter very few smokers. I think there is room for the few smokers left out there on a cruise ship.

We'd be thrilled to bits with HAL's smoking policy if they make one more change and that is to ban smoking on verandahs. If you have not had a verandah with a smoker beside yours, you cannot know how miserable it can be. One cruise we lost complete use of our verandah for the whole cruise as it seemed they never left their verandah. I think they went on vacation so they could smoke non-stop all day/all evening.

Please let us know what you hear back from HAL, and IF you hear from them.

We did so well with our wine petition...maybe we should try that for eliminating smoking on verandah's.

I will.

I wasn't part of the wine petition (didn't even know about it until after the fact ... and happy with the results, BTW) but would be all for a non-smoking verandahs petition if someone wants to take the lead.

Chuckle, you got busted. You told him how to spend his vacation dollars ie not on HAL. no difference there.

By the way who is this Hal guy that is smoking on balconies and why do you have to keep asking him to stop?

That petition I will sign and I am sure DH would as well. :)

I just hope, if someone puts together a petition, there is a request to also provide an INDOOR smoking area for smokers (e.g., my parents) who will no longer be able to smoke on their verandas.

Although, in all likelihood, if HAL bans verandah smoking, they will probably stop cruising. :( Which is a shame given their long career on HAL and the limited amount they DO smoke.

Sail7seas,

What about my proposal for odd/even days, odd/even hours? Wouldn't that allow you (as a non-smoker) and smokers to enjoy their verandahs?

I applaud the original thinking and constructive suggestion but I'm not sure it would work. We as sweetly and politely as possible requested the really offensive neighbor if there was any way he/she could give us a small window we could enjoy our verandah and they could refrain from smoking for a least a brief period. The response was 'it is permitted' and a puff of smoke aimed at us. I have doubts your system would be honored and would invoke arguments that can get ugly...... but I certainly could be wrong and maybe worth a try.

I keep reading how smokers tell us they are considerate and try not to bother anyone but as long as HAL permits smoking on the verandahs, all verandah smokers are bothering someone whether or not they know it. Maybe not the people beside them but maybe the ones right above them or to the left of those above them. There is most likely someone they are bothering.

Some smokers care; some do not.

Since we are all putting our wishes out there I wish HAL would have an inside bar with entertainment where we could have a drink and a smoke.:D

As a non-smoker..... I actually second that emotion! There should be a way to provide such a space without impacting on the rest of the ship.

All 4 Vista class ships did have a smoking room -- the Oak Room. It was a closed off room in the Crow's Nest on the Starboard side of the ship. Three of them have been removed to make room for the Explorations Café, Library and Internet Café.

The only Oak Room left is on the Noordam. You can smoke cigars and cigarettes there. You can also order drinks there. But there is no entertainment there except watching the artificial fireplace. At one time there were doors looking out onto the deck -- but they are gone now that cabins have been added to that deck.

Thanx for the reply. I agree, some smokers care; some do not. With today's policy, flexibility on both sides is the way to go.

I fully agree there should be a comfortable indoor place for smokers to have their smoke without bothering everyone else. It doesn't have to be fancy or large but has to have excellent ventillation and some comfortable seating.

I do NOT think any steward should be required to enter that smoking section to take drink orders. Anyone who wants a beverage can carry it in with them. NO non-smoker should be required to enter including cleaning staff. Only a smoker should be required to do housekeeping duties.

Non sensible person today denies the risk of second hand smoke.

On one cruise we could not use our verandah at all. The woman in the cabin next to us sat right by our partition and smoked all morning, all day and late into the night -- one cigarette after another. Her husband sat at the far end of the verandah -- away from her or sat inside. They had their meals delivered. Bad situation. And between smokes she coughed a lot.

Been there and done that and it was awful!!! The coughing we would hear was enough to take away our appetite. Such hacking I thought she was coughing up a lung.

I have a friend dying of stage 4 lung cancer that has spread all over her body. She's not 70 yet. She's been chain smoking and coughing up a lung for the past 15 years.

Seriously, maybe we could start a petition and hope HAL would designate some indoor place to smoke. Since most ships don't allow smoking in cabins or on verandas, what would they lose?
Me too! As a reformed smoker I don't like smelling it in the casino and would not want to smell it on my veranda if I had one. I've been smoke free for almost 2 years now after smoking for 54 years. I know a HAL cruiser who is a chain smoker and would hate to have a veranda cabin near that person. Rain, sun, hot, cold, that person is out there puffing away a good part of the day.
Fortunately that person always books one particular category of cabin, so even if you find yourself booked on the same cruise you can switch cabins to avoid it.;) It's the ones you don't know about that can ruin your cruise. We had one next to us for 2 weeks, and the smoke wasn't so much a problem, but the hacking and awful noises were. No way could we ever eat on our balcony.

It isn't enforced, and is totally ignored by half the town. Your proposal would meet a similar fate.
