?I think HALHas loads of Jewish customers who would welcome this move were they to cancel further visits to Tunisia or any other discriminatory country

I have no idea what your suggesting or talking about but I hope that we are going to get into that kind of action. When Hal doesn't stop at a port it is because of the safety of all passengers not a selected group. If I have misunderstood the statement I am sorry.

If more cruise lines were to cut purse strings in other aggressive or discriminatoric countries perhaps then would they stop their unacceptable behaviour

How much do you think not getting off in Russia would cost tourism there ...enough to stop what is going on elsewhere ....Like Ukraine???Millions of $$$ in visas and visits to St Petersburg is poured into Russia by tourists .....hitting the pocket is the way to go ....

At one time I read, that if a US Citizen had a Israel stamp in their passport they would not be able to get off in Tunisa but that was a while ago. Then I noticed when we visited Israel via ship, we usually only get a landing card, no passport stamp. So I think this is not a new issue in general.

You are correct.. This has been going on for many years!

 

Most American Psgrs on Airlines & Cruises are well aware of the fact that if they are planning to go into an Arab Country, they should not have a stamp from Israel in their passports or they will be denied entry.. Also don't believe that any of the Arab states will admit someone with a passport from Israel..

 

I even knew this when working for an International Airline & that was many years ago..When I planned on visiting Israel, I would have had to request a visa on a separate document other than my passport as I too travelled to many Arab states..

 

I don't believe that cruise lines should stop going into Russia because of the situation in the Ukraine..These problems come up all over the world such as cruises which stop in both the Faulklands & Argentina..

 

IMO Cruise Lines should do everything possible to not become involved with politics..Agree with Boards that HAL should think about ALL their Psgrs, not just a one group.

I agree completely. Do we want to find ourselves unable to travel anywhere, with dozens of countries off-limits for one political reason or another that has nothing to do with safety?

 

It's frustrating enough not to be able to travel to Cuba. How many countries in this world have unblemished records?? Not many.

Well said. Safety should always be the concern, but visiting a country with issues, whether of discrimination or oppression gives some of the people and opening to meet people from other places. I'm not going to derail this, but I remember a port call in Leningrad where the guides were Intourist. The morning guide was open, interesting and interested. The afternoon guide was your worst Intourist nightmare.

As far as political correctness, support of undemocratic nations, countries with UN sanctions etc. If this were the case there would be very few ports and countries that cruise ships would be able to go....including those in North America.

We're on the June 17 Noordam cruise which has a port call scheduled for La Goulette. I'm not sure where I read it, but someplace is the info that, if necessary, HAL will substitute Sardinia.

Found it. Tunis was cancelled in 2013. We still list Tunis, but that's the subsitution.

We do not know if this was an act of discrimination or not.

 

We do not know if the Israeli passengers who were not allowed to disembark had the required visas or were even aware that they were needed.

 

NCL appears to also have been unaware that visas were needed. I know it is the common stance of most cruise lines that it is the passenger's responsibility to find out about and obtain any visas needed for travel.

 

If they had the proper visas and were denied the right to disembark, then I agree there was discrimination.

 

If they did not have the visas, then either NCL or the passengers should have done their homework.

I fully support and admire the Norwegian Cruise Line for standing up against discriminations. I sure hope that HAL will do the same. I don't want my American money wasted to support this oppressive regime.

for those that do not know.. it is not up to the cruise line whether the pax are allowed to disembark but of the country being visited..

 

that being said.. on our last three 45 and 42 day Transatlantic October cruises to Europe on the Maasdam any South African passport holders are NOT allowed to disembark in Morocco.. the itinerary calls for stops in both Tangier and Casablanca.. I know someone on the staff who was not told about that until the last minute at the gangway even though he had already booked a private excursion that day in Tangier.. his friends went off without him.. he is a white South African even though the country is targeting black South Africans

 

personally as far as I'm concerned they can leave Morocco completely off that particular cruise .. I guess Morocco has a right to do what it wants---I sure wouldn't miss it...it's a dump--personal opinion of course
