what's the fun of a 1-nighter?

Maybe it's because we live near a cold port but I don't get the appeal of hauling my cookies all the way to NYC, paying for parking, standing in the boarding line & then reversing the process the next day. To what? Basically spend money in a floating hotel / bar & see some kind of show.

It seems so much cheaper & easier to go to a land based hotel for one night & use the indoor pool.

Can somebody enlighten me about the appeal of these overnight trips?

On many of these one-nighters a balcony cabin is under $100 per person even after adding taxes and government fees. So where in the NYC area will you find a hotel room for $200 that includes three meals, entertainment and a casino on the property?

So who will you meet onboard? Yes there are those who view a cruise to nowhere as an excuse to cram a weekend's (or more) worth of gambling or partying into one night. But you will also find ordinary cruisers for whom an 18 hour vacation is all their time and/or budget allows at the moment. But a lot of regular cruisers jump on these only because for the price of one night onboard they get a full cruise credit towards increasing their loyalty program status.

I'm sure a lot of the people that go on these 1-night cruises are first-timers who want to see whether they'll like it before committing themselves to a longer cruise. It's like eating a sample before buying the 3lbs box at Costco :D.

If you live in the tri-state area (NY/NJ/CT) and it costs next to nothing to get to the Manhattan terminal, and you book a minimum cabin (and for just overnight...who cares!) It's a LOT cheaper than going out on the town (NYC) for dinner, overnight hotel, entertainment, etc.....and if one is so inclined, the casino is an option. But if you're not from the area, but spending a week or so in NYC, where else could you go and take an over night "cruise" on an ocean liner!?!?!?!?

And/or it allows experienced cruisers to try a cruise line or ship they haven't been on before.

The lines and hassle of boarding and the waiting to get off represents a lot of un enjoyable time, but it might be a way to "sample" cruising --- but cerainly not worth considering if you have to travel any distance to the port. To get a taste of cruising, a three or four day first cruise would make a better minimum. Now, two weeks is the minimum we consider.

I've done these. The last one was with four couples, we took the train from Seattle to Vancouver, BC. Spent the night in a hotel there and boarded the ship the next day. Had a wonderful time on the ship for one night and ended up back in Seattle. It made for a great weekend getaway. I wouldn't do a short cruise like that unless it was local.

I have now sailed twice with Princess ( 2 nights total ) and get the past guest discount.

We sometimes spend the night in a hotel in the city we live for an event which may seem silly to some.

Maybe would do a one night if it was a fairly quick car ride away.

No way would we fly or drive more than a couple of hours for a ONE Night cruise.

Being wined and dined with someone I love no distractions of home ...

Amazing...best answer!:D

The DH and I did this once for the same reason and because we wanted to see if the DH's mom would be able to enjoy such a cruise when she came to visit us. This was many years ago out of San Diego, which is two hours from where we live. The cost of the cruise included a one-night stay at a local hotel where you could park your car for free and take a shuttle in the morning to the port. The DH and I had an awesome time. We hung out in the jacuzi for a while, had breakfast, lunch, and got all guzzied up for dinner. After dinner we hit the dance floor and then took a walk on the deck in the moonlight. Corny I know; but it made for wonderful memories all the same.:D

Unfortunately, the DH's mom would not have been able to do the cruise but we enjoyed it ourselves immensly.
