nyc to Canada (7day).

it's a free cruise from my casino. I just have to pay port fees + taxes.

I understand port fees.

but What are the taxes? How is this calculated?

Taxes are set by local governments and municipalities.

I think that's what we paid for a seven nighter on the breakaway. The day we were getting the certificate we hit a dollar machine for 600 so this was truly a "free" cruise.

Taxes, like port charges have nothing to do with the cruise line, they are set by the government and Canada has extremely high taxes. there is no way to calculate them, each providence or city/state sets their own plus what ever the federal government adds.

Actually the taxes are the port fees.

The $150 is actually a "non commissioned fare" so the cruise isn't actually free. There's no way around it. It's a common trick in the industry.

It has nothing to do with the industry; the taxes and port charges are set by the governing port.

what is ncf then if it's not a govt fee?

a gov't fee is an ncf but an ncf is not just a gov't fee

NCF is anything the cruise line wants it to be. Taxes and port fees are included in NCFs but other things would be as well. So NCFs are not relevant to what the OP must pay to get their 'free' cruise.

NCFs are a way to market lower cruise fares a la the airlines with sandwich surcharges and fuel add-on, (no fuel for me thanks). Just makes the fare appear cheaper. But these NCFs are not included in the commission calculation to TAs as well, hence the name 'non-commissionable fees'. The more they can add into NCFs the less they pay agents and the lower the *apparent* fare, and the more someone must ay for a 'free' cruise (though that is far less important to the cruise line than the other reasons)

They absolutely 100% are. The NCF is the portion of the cruise fare that NCL will not waive. This is different from the taxes and the DSF. As was said earlier, on 'free' crusies you have to pay all three. My friend got his certificate and was given this list of cruises...

3 - 4 Day - Bahamas cruise on Sky or Pearl from Miami

7 Day - Caribbean cruise on Dawn, Epic, Sun, Jewel or Getaway departing from Miami, Houston, Tampa or New Orleans

7 Day - Alaskan cruise on Sun departing from Vancouver

7 Day - Bahamas/Florida cruise on Breakaway or Gem departing from New York

7 Day - Bermuda cruise on Dawn departing from Boston

7 Day - Canada/New England cruise on Dawn or Gem departing from Boston, New York or Quebec

7 Day - Mexican Riviera cruise on Star departing from Los Angeles

He checked on the Getaway and he would have to pay the following per person:

$190 NCF

$114.92 Taxes

$84 DSF

I'll retract that. Too much information.

My thinking was to the question I replied to was that that the gov't taxes and fees are part of the set that comprises NCFs. I can't say for certain if they are the only things in NCFs nor if this 'free' cruise condition requires payment of everything the NCF set or just the gov't tax & fee

That may or not be the case.

Looking at your three items it appears that taxes are not part of their NCF category. So what makes up the $190? Only port fees or port fees plus other or ? It really does not matter though as NCL can put anything they want in it
