So how much do you drink on a cruise?

Came across two interesting articles regarding average cruise passenger alcohol consumption. The first (http://blog.shipmateapp.com/alcohol-on-cruise-consumption/) dated in January of this year says:

"Per Cruise Passenger / Per Day

0.3 glasses of champagne

0.7 beers

1.2 glasses of wine

2.4 mixed drinks"

The second (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/cruises/cruise-news/11021248/168-units-of-alcohol-just-an-average-week-on-a-cruise-ship.html) dated August of this year says:

"Bonvoyage.co.uk, uncovered the staggering statistics, which suggest that a cruise passenger’s daily alcohol consumption – during a one-week sailing – might consist of six beers, a couple of cocktails, a bottle of wine and a pair of whiskies."

Seems to be quite huge spread between these two sets of numbers. I Personally I can't imagine consuming a 6 pack of beer, bottle of wine and several cocktails and/or hard shots in the space of one day. Now those numbers are based on a poll of Brits and if anywhere close to being accurate might paint them them as being world class lushes (no offense meant) and absolutely argue for them taking the drink packages. Myself, I do take the drink package and probably imbibe more than If I didn't. But even then a couple of beers during the day, a glass or two of wine with dinner and a couple of cocktails one before and maybe one after dinner is more than plenty.

I am curious as to what others think might be typical alcoholic consumption on board and whether they think or have experienced different consumption patterns with/without the beverage packages Celebrity offers.

Consumption levels from that article were unbelievable.

We usually drink 7 or 8 bottles of wine in a two week cruise, as well as an after dinner drink or glass of wine, plus 2 or 3 drinks a day at the elite happy hour.

Somewhere in between enough and a lot :)

Above by Cruise Junky is a great and a probably honest summary/guess. With us, much depends on whether you've got "free" drinks or you need to have each one of these beverages put on your bill. Fortunately on our Solstice cruise between Australia and New Zealand earlier this year, we had the 1-2-3-Go package. Free is always the right price!! AND, another key factor, will be your number of port stops versus how many sea days on your cruise. Lots of factors and variables!!

This alleged "news" item:

"Bonvoyage.co.uk, uncovered the staggering statistics, which suggest that a cruise passenger’s daily alcohol consumption – during a one-week sailing – might consist of six beers, a couple of cocktails, a bottle of wine and a pair of whiskies."

seems very, very high. A few people on any cruise are really going to go after thins with "gusto", but most are not that way.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

I have to admit that hen on vacation we do like to drink alcohol

But we find value in our Bevvy Pkg because on vacation we also tend to drink more of everything

We go Premium cause we like the wide assortment of offerings (non alcohol) plus the Higherend wine & spirits

So our day might look like this (copy of post I did recently for another topic):

Sure there are people on cruise ships who drink to excess...

But as I have pointed out many times before one can easily get "value" out of a Celebrity Bevvy Package without a whole lot of Booze in the mix...

Morning:

Premium Tea or Coffee from Cafe al Bacio

Fresh Squeezed OJ (or Smoothie) with Breakfast

Day Ashore:

2 Bottles of Spring Water as one leaves the ship

Back Aboard:

A stop at Cafe al Bacio for a cool & refreshing Iced Tea or Coffee

Cocktail Hour:

An exotic drink from one of the many Bars aboard... Martini - Molecular - or Crush

Dinner:

A bottle of Sparking Water

A glass or two of wine

A Cappucinno with Dessert

After Dinner:

A nightcap in one of the many bars or lounges, casino or nightclub

Or perhaps just a late night Coffee, Tea or Bottled Water before turning in

In total... 2, 3 or 4 alcoholic bevvys... But way more non-alcoholic liquids in the mix

I truly believe that the break even point for most Celebrity Cruisers is going to be found around that 2nd or 3rd alcoholic drink a day...

And health wise that also can still be with in the acceptable Guidelines for consumption (Women = 2 per day to a max of 14 per week... And Men = 3 per day to a max of 21 per week)

Cheers!

Lol, I admit a sea day and there might me more of a lax attitude, and an extra frozen concoction on the list  *gasp*

By all accounts it is true that the further one lives away from the Equator the more one drinks evidently...

Or could it just be that all of us with British Roots are predisposed (after all Rum was a mainstay on any Royal Navy Tour for centuries)

Lol would some what explain I suppose how many Canadians tend to naturally gravitate to hanging out with those from the UK (including England, Scotland & Ireland) as well as the Aussies...

Drinking is just another thing we all have in common (pubs being a big way to socialize in all our countries fair weather or foul)

Cheers!

(lol even my usual sign off gives a nod to our predisposition I am afraid... Even if one by nature isn't a big drinker or a tea totaler)

Try to drink the cost of the premium drink package by 1PM. After that it is all profit...

Appreciate this super funny, great posting above. It sets a worthy goal to which one can aspire in life. Wonderful!!

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Did a June 7-19, 2011, Celebrity Solstice cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik. Why would you ask?

This is my standard come-back to (curious) nosy people who are too inquisitive for their own good.

Bottom line: "Mind your own Ps & Qs".:p

I guess typical alcohol consumption depends whether or not you're a drinker. I like a drink & guess I'm somewhere between the 2 surveys (so maybe not quite a world class lush :D ).

If you are paying for drinks I think there's a temptation not to have an extra one as you have to pay for it. With a package a cheeky "free" afternoon beer becomes a treat, and at dinner they don't let your wine glass empty (does that count as one glass?), so you do probably drink more. I enjoyed my Celebrity package as much for the premium teas in Cafe al Bacio though, as I don't often drink during the day and afternoon tea made a nice change. I agree with an earlier poster that it's also good to add some non-alcoholic drinks to the mix.

Personally, I don't keep track of what I drink. If I'm with people I enjoy being with I probably drink a bit more. Depends on the day, where I am, and who I am with.

Seems to me most people are behaving and just enjoying themselves - not counting how many drinks they or others have had. :)

I invested in the drink package on my last Celebrity cruise (it as well worth it), consumption varied depending on port or sea day:

2 specialty coffees

1 fresh OJ

2 Sodas

1-2 Frozen drinks

2 cordials

wine or cocktail w/dinner

Large bottle of water with dinner

2 Martini's

2+ Bottled Water throughout the day

On our last cruise we kept a log on what we drank just to see. I averaged 8-10 alcoholic drinks a day .

We had a great time! :p

The reason I tried Celebrity and then booked 2 more cruises is because I don't have to worry about what I drink. I don't think about what it costs or if I will like it. I am happy to try the 'pink cocktail' that I was too frugal to experiment with before.

Still, we really don't drink that much, but I really enjoy that at dinner the sommelier just always keeps my glass full. :)

Drink packages have changed our cruise vacation.

I bought the Premium package for my wife and I.....

I plan to get on board and get comfortably numb and maintain it for 10 nights.....not 'I can't function/falling down/loud talker drunk', but comfortable...and everyone's comfort level is different :D
