Ashes to Ashes

I wish RCI would ban all smoking. On my 8-22 sailing on EN, I was out on the balcony and the person in the next cabin was smoking on her balcony. Then in horror, I watched as she flicked the cig overboard. It was dark and I could watch the thing glow even hotter as the breeze fanned the butt, and it got blown back against the ship. I don't know if it blew back onto the promenade deck or a lower balcony. But I could follow it all the way down until it was out of sight by the side of the ship. When we left the ship at the end of the cruise, I told the cabin steward what happened and he said I should have told him. He said he could smell smoke in the room but couldn't find proof. They are instructed to confront the offending smoker. It would have come down to my word against hers.

It isn't JUST about the smell but you described it perfectly! All it takes is one

ember starting something that cannot be controlled!!!!!!!!!!

From looking at their prior posts, they are diamond and this would have been their second time on the Freedom. The poster is actually a former host on CC and is moving back to this screen name.

Interesting. I only "looked at" her list of posts; didn't read any. But it was a short list, and all were either Carnival posts or Freedom July 2015 Roll Call posts.

A new identity would explain a lot of that.

:)

Back to the speculation.

She (the OP) has never been on a Royal Caribbean cruise. She had her first one booked for next summer. No one seems to be posting on her roll call. Perhaps she just got frustrated with that.

But the point of her post here and her real reason for cancelling are both mysteries to me.

Diamond Level Cruiser on Royal and Platinum on Carnival - You shouldnt make assumptions -BTW - former employee here at Cruise Critic. Look up posts for HOST TERRY!

Yes, mema already mentioned this in post 37. Terry, why don't you engage us instead of posting something so provocative and then not participating or elaborating? Discuss. :D

I'm with Bob...I'm assuming they are upset that there are other places you can still smoke including the casino. They may not feel RC is doing enough? I'm not sure  I'll be honest, I will avoid the casino just avoid the stale smell of smoke. It just isn't worth it to me and I'm not really someone who enjoys gambling anyway.

I feel the same way. Does Royal Caribbean have a non smoking night in their casinos? Princess has a night or two depending on the length of the cruise. That's when I go, though it still stinks.

Unfortunately RCI no longer offers non-smoking nights, just designated non-smoking areas in there during operating hours. And as leaveitallbehind posted 'I don't believe that smoke can read and it tends to ignore the signs and goes where it wants to.'

As a non-smoker, I'd prefer having it restricted to e-cigs in the casino. I'm not familiar with exactly how it is to be around 'vaping', but smokers seem to feel that e-cigs on a balcony can't be detected. To me this sounds like an opportunity for some improvement in the air quality of the casino- and surrounding areas.

Formal nights have always been non-smoking in the casino. As far as I know that has not changed.

Yawwwnnn. Another smoking thread.

CC, why not set up a separate forum for these? Since most lines have restricted smoking, these threads seem more topic related than specific to one cruise line.

Oddly enough it's a refreshing change from the magic wrist band threads that recently ran roughshod over this forum. ;):D

I've not seen non-smoking nights in the casino for some months now.

I think we had them in March. I know for a fact we did previously, but on Allure since the casino is divided it's a moot point. I'm curious to see this Nov on GR, but honestly who wants their formal clothes to stink?

Or, you could just refrain from opening a thread that doesn't interest you.

I have cancelled my cruise. I am a non-smoker. Not sure why balcony smoking is not allowed while smoking in other areas including the Casino is allowed. If cigarette smoke on a moving cruise ship bothers you, I am sure the smell coming from the ships funnel has to bother you. 21% of Americans still smoke -the numbers are higher overseas according to my research. How will this policy affect the bottom line.... My letter below from corporate.

Happy sailing to everyone!

Dear Terry:

Thank you for your email. We apologize for the delay in our response.

We appreciate your candid and valuable feedback regarding our enhanced smoking policy.

At Royal Caribbean International, our priority is to provide an onboard experience that is safe for all of our guests. Onboard policies, including the new smoking policy, are implemented after conducting extensive research to ensure that we continue to provide our guests with the award-winning vacation experience they have come to expect from Royal Caribbean International. Through this process, we found that many guests were displeased with second hand smoke that emanated from guests smoking on their balconies. Many of the policies on our ships are the result of feedback we have received from our loyal guests and consumers. We are confident that this new smoking policy will enhance the cruising experience for our guests.

We thank you for the time you have taken to share your concerns regarding this matter. We have certainly taken your comments into consideration, and they have been shared with our leadership team for review.

We would appreciate the opportunity to welcome you onboard one of our cruise ships in the future. Regardless of how you choose to spend your vacations, we wish you and your family the best in your future travels.

Thank you for contacting Royal Caribbean International.

Sincerely,

As others are perplexed, I can only assume you are a stockholder thinking you will take a hit on the stock.

but I don't believe that smoke can read and it tends to ignore the signs and goes where it wants to.

Indeed, but it will respond to the dynamics of the fluid in which it is suspended.

I have never understood why the cruise lines dont understand this, but by adding a constant low pressure on the smoking side of a casino (or at the extreme end of a smoking area), the smoke would drift with the air in that direction, where it might be filtered and recirculated back to the room, or expelled outside. This has the added benefit limiting the amount of smoking related cleaning that will migrate to other areas.

We have already seen a large increase in people using the casino as the smoking lounge. I forget which ship, but I've seen signs posted saying no smoking unless you are playing.

Saw that on Carnival Triumph last December:)

The better way forward is to simply follow Celebrity, their policies don't seem to hurt them at all.

I actually don't want any of my clothes to stink and would rather all the "public" internal areas be Smoke free and leave the Balconies alone or indeed keep that ban

The Open deck should be the ONLY area where smoking is allowed

IMHO of Course
