Except that at least initially, most people do not know what that means when compare to some free amount they get for being Platinum or Elite or for the usage they are paying for. Until they can set a handle on it, there will be complaints

We'll (and by "we," I of course mean me) need to have conversion charts, like 5 minutes of emailing equals X number of MBs.

For the past year or so, when I've logged out of the Internet, I've received a usage report with the time logged in, logged out, minutes used and MB.

Here's a screenshot from last January. As you can see, it looks like they've been preparing this for a while:

Not practical. If you email 1 photo, that could be the same as 20 paragraphs of text. Plus, how fast do you type? Do you type offline and send later?

Pictures, audio, video = Big use of data

Plain text (email without attachments) = Small use of data

Stick to that as a guideline and you will do pretty well.

Good way to look at it.

BTW, Thrak, I am off line on a cruise for seven days and all of a sudden your avatar looks like an IT guy.......hmmm. What next on these boards???....lol

There's not much to be done about educating people. I spend my days working with people who have masters degrees but their eyes glaze over and they say it's all gobbledygook if you try to tell them the difference between a screen saver and wallpaper. They say they "don't understand that technical stuff". Really?

The way I put it in my previous post they "may" grasp the concept of what is big data and what is small data. Trying to explain things like kilobytes, megabytes, etc. gets me nowhere at all. Some of them still seem to be convinced that the monitor is the computer and either don't know what "that other thing" (the computer) is or else they think it's called a modem.

(Just keep repeating: 2 more years and I can retire, 2 more years and I can retire, 2 more years and I can retire...)

NOTE: I am by no means trying to insinuate that CC members are unable to grasp the concept of data size. I just find that a large percentage of people "in the wild" don't seem to get it. They tend to turn off their brains because they "think" they can't get it.

What if you are only online checking E-Mail, reading articles, checking stock prices etc without downloading or sending anything. How does just time used = MB?

You're still using data. Every time you check your mail, even without photos or images, your smartphone, tablet, computer, etc. is downloading data. Every time you go to a website to check stock prices, you're downloading data. If it's just text or the images on the webpage are small KB-type images, it's not much but can add up. See my screenshot above. That's from my iPhone just checking email.

And all the garbage advertising that comes when you get a web page = big use of data

And when you download your e-mail, you have no control over the size of attachments that your friends back on land have e-mailed to you.

Ugh! Yeah. I have a friend who constantly sends me photos of cute animals. When I'm on a cruise, I can delete the email before it downloads the images.

Because it is only on the Regal Princess so far in the Princess fleet, and because it is only available right now in the Caribbean routes, we wouldn't have seen any reports of the internet speeds being better on the Regal because it has only just now arrived here in North America and soon to be doing the Caribbean cruises where this service is available.

AdBlockerPlus is your friend for most browsers (not mobile sadly). That said, many of them are flash anims or html5 anims now, so unless they have audio not so bad.

I board Thursday for the 3 day and the 7 day so i'll report whether or not I notice a difference.

Would be great as my husband has to unfortunately do some work so we purchased a plan on top of our minutes. I'd love if he could get his stuff done in less time.

Adblock Plus is definitely available for Android... I'm pretty sure either Adblock or Adblock Plus is available for iOS as well.
