Alaska excurions, book thru cruise or on my own?

Right now, I have our excursions booked through the ship. Now I'm curious about the difference in prices.

Being that this is my first time cruising...I will admit to be a little nervous about booking excursions on my own. Afraid i will screw up or something.

What are the suggestions on this? For Alaska, what are the local groups I can book them from?

Probably best to ask this on the Alaska Cruise board:

Schmoo has give very good advice, in regards to some research on the Alaska board. Booking privately takes research and planning, but is, in many cases, cheaper, and almost always better use of your time.

You just need to be clear on your time in port, so there isn't any issues with your getting back to the ship.

You've got enough on your plate as a first time cruiser. Use the ship tours and cross that worry off your list.

You can also go to the Roll Call for your Cruise, join it, and see if anyone in the group has set-up any private excursions. You choose your cruise line, then the ship you are on, then the date of the cruise and check that board out. You may find a wealth of info in the Roll Call. Good luck either way as Alaska is a wonderful place to cruise.
