sarahruby Posted January 7, 2015 #1 Share Posted January 7, 2015 Right now, I have our excursions booked through the ship. Now I'm curious about the difference in prices. Being that this is my first time cruising...I will admit to be a little nervous about booking excursions on my own. Afraid i will screw up or something. What are the suggestions on this? For Alaska, what are the local groups I can book them from?

Probably best to ask this on the Alaska Cruise board: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=-1&f=
CruiserBruce Posted January 7, 2015 #3 Share Posted January 7, 2015 Schmoo has give very good advice, in regards to some research on the Alaska board. Booking privately takes research and planning, but is, in many cases, cheaper, and almost always better use of your time. You just need to be clear on your time in port, so there isn't any issues with your getting back to the ship.
cb at sea Posted January 8, 2015 #4 Share Posted January 8, 2015 A guidebook is key to a DIY time! Figure out what you want to see/do, then google that, and find out private guides!
Rare geoherb Posted January 8, 2015 #5 Share Posted January 8, 2015 In our three cruises to Alaska, we've only gone with the cruise line's excursion once--snorkeling in Ketchikan. I booked that one because of the short time we had in the port.

Steviewonder1 Posted January 8, 2015 #7 Share Posted January 8, 2015 You can also go to the Roll Call for your Cruise, join it, and see if anyone in the group has set-up any private excursions. You choose your cruise line, then the ship you are on, then the date of the cruise and check that board out. You may find a wealth of info in the Roll Call. Good luck either way as Alaska is a wonderful place to cruise.
JimAOk1945 Posted January 9, 2015 #8 Share Posted January 9, 2015 My preference is to book all of our excursions through the cruise line regardless of our itinerary. Alaska is fantastic. We have been there twice and have plans to return. You will have a great cruise!
