Man Overboard Oasis - Picked up by Disney Magic

You can make a rather serviceable floating device from a pair of long pants. Take them off, zip them up, tie a knot near the ankles, grasp near the waist, take a deep breath, stick your head inside the waist band and exhale. Repeat. After a few minutes, you will have inflated your floating device. Put a leg under each arm. You may need to add air.

One of the things I was taught in Boot camp when I was in the Navy. I was also taught how to jump from a ship and survive.

First, passengers are not permitted on the helipad on the Oasis/Allure. I do not even know how he could have accessed it.

Further, if he did, I am sure that he would have been noticed immediately by the bridge and action would have been taken.

There are allot of areas you can go where your not supposed to.. They normally don't lock doors. only put up notices where it says "crew only. That wont stop a curious passenger, expecially one of college age, and drunk.. Remember the one kid who climbed the mast on a carnival ship and got killed by the radar when it was started up? And at 3am there isn't much activity onboard and anybody walking out onto the bow area you couldn't tell if he or she was crew or passenger anyhow due to the darkness and lack of lighting. The front of the ship is completely dark for Nav reasons and visability.

Not sure if this chap was in any condition to construct one of those.;)

But I heard somewhere that a booze soaked liver makes for a good flotation device.

Okay 4 hours treading water wow.... but the pants ? I never wore long pants all week except for dining 2 nights so I wouldn't have had a flotation possible device.

Deck 14 on the Oasis you can walk out and around looking down to the Bow and helipad you are right above the Bridge and the walking area sticks out maybe 20' over the Post and Starboard sides. Not a fun place to fall from but you can wave to the Bridge on the way down......

I'm hoping that Royal Caribbean has video of what exactly happened. We might not get to see it, but it should shut the guy's lawyers up.

Have you ever heard of any plaintiffs' lawyers who shut up?;)

If you have, buy a Lotto ticket, NOW, TONIGHT!:p

How should they keep track of all the people? Would we need to have chips implanted when we check in? Wear ankle brackets at all times? Since this happened in the pre-dawn dark, what do you suggest that would immediately let the ship know a passenger went overboard? How does Carnival accomplish this?

Like this story…in the 2012 Carnival Destiny incident, the ship crew did not know about the guest overboard until it was reported by witnesses. So the Destiny's man-overboard-notification-system, whatever it is, clearly doesn't work. (Or maybe it does work - maybe it's a system that depends on somebody seeing a person go overboard and reporting it.) Or maybe they also had too many passengers 'to keep track of?'

Sarah Alexandra Badley Kirby was on a five-night Caribbean cruise onboard Carnival Destiny in October 2012 when the incident occurred. Though Kirby alleges in her lawsuit that she fell from her balcony, witnesses told Carnival Cruise Lines she jumped.

According to Courthouse News Service, lawyers for Kirby wrote that after becoming "extremely intoxicated," she stepped on to her balcony for air. "As she was holding on to the balcony's wooden banister, the plaintiff lost her grip and balance, slipped off the ground and fell overboard into the ocean."

Kirby alleges in her lawsuit that despite a friend immediately reporting that Kirby went overboard, the captain of the ship refused to stop or turn around until a 90-minute shipwide search had been conducted.

Once the ship did turn around and rescue Kirby from the water, she claims ship doctors refused to treat her injuries (including multiple broken bones, lung contusions and blood clots), giving her only pain medication. Additionally, she claims Carnival refused to airlift her to a hospital in Miami, instead diverting the ship to Key West.

Kirby further accused Carnival of getting her drunk by "pushing" Long Island iced-teas on her and encouraging her to drink more by giving her free $5 casino coupons each time she purchased more drinks.

She is suing Carnival Corp., as well as four people, including two of the doctors on the ship at the time, for negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Quite scary!

What do you bet this Oasis case will generate a similar lawsuit? Looks like the lawyer's already been retained...

Judy

Hope Carnival sued her back for the costs of looking for her.

Agree about lawyer being retained -- guess it was Walker

and how would you suggest they track and monitor each passenger? we each wear a tracking bracelet or GPS device on us so they know where we are at all times? People need to take responsibility for themselves .. its called being an adult.

Get real ... .

I think they are doing exactly that on the Quantrum. HA!

We're on the Oasis now. The tels us the video clearly shows this guy jumped from deck 5. His family left the ship in Cozumel to meet him in the hospital.

It's been an interesting cruise. A near drowning and a return to Port Everglades, a helicopter evacuation from Labadee an now a guy jumps overboard.

Good luck to all of those affected by these incidents.

An article was posted on Royal Caribbean's Facebook page about 8 hours ago today about the incident. I tried to copy & paste it here but unsuccessful in that effort. Search for Royal Caribbean's FB page & you'll see the article. In fact, that's how I found out about it & jumped over here to see what the scuttlebutt about it might be.

I know we don't all the the truth of the story but I am pretty It wasn't the fault of any wave for the reason this idiot ended up in the water. I don't agree with mr walker that it was a big embarresment to royal carribean that they didn't know they were missing a passenger. Really people?? I don't get that! Royal carribean can't be responsible for stupidity.

A big wave (that nobody else saw) knocking him off a deck on the largest cruise ship in the world is pretty funny story.

Could be he was hanging over the side and a wave rocked the ship and he lost his footing??? "The motion of the ocean". Guys lucky to be alive!

If you are floating in the water for 4 hours, reconsidering your original actions, and thankful to be rescued, being banned from future cruises....trying to come up with a plausible story is probably the least of his problems.

No way it was a a big wake...I have been on the Allure so same size...you don't even feel the motion of being on a boat ...I can't imagine how big the wave would have to be that threw somebody up and over the side of the boat ....it's not even remotely believable. Especially since nobody else felt this big wake. I think he needs to come up with another story or maybe the truth.

We were recently on the Oasis and when I did the Bridge tour I specifically asked about some kind of man overboard detection system...but was told they had nothing of the sort. They do have hundreds of cameras recording constantly and the 1st officer told me that they can look back and see how a person went overboard.... he was not sure how long the images were kept for.

I don't know why ships that cost over 1 billion dollars can't have a man overboard system...my friend has a very expensive house and has an alarm system that detects anyone crossing a special perimeter beam...and small animals, birds or rodents don't set it off....quite cool really.

Anyways kind of scary the you can fall of a ship and for 4-5 hours no one knows your missing....

I have sailed the Oasis. I agree with you there is NO way to fall from Deck 5 from a wave. This guest must have jumped.

Pretty soon each cruise line will have railings that are 10 Feet tall that are solid steel that way no one can "acidentaly" fall overboard.
