Norovirus on Grandeur

Recommended Posts

I had the moro virus two years ago getting off a ship, not RC by the way. It is horrible but it passes for me it took three days.

My opinion, there are 2-3 RC ships that had this problem this past week...which leads me to believe its from food. The cruise line purchases its food in the same place and distributes them to the ships. Perhaps those on the Grandeur and the OAS got the same lot of a certain type of food that gave them moro.

When in the casino NEVER TOUCH YOUR FACE until you wash it with hot water and soap, I use soap twice in a row. I use the sanatizer everywhere I see it, but this certainly doesn't make me 100% moro proof but it helps. Remember we touching doors, and such so its best never to touch your face with your hands, if you have an itch or something always use a tissue.

About the measles...yes, there are reports a handful of people who had the vaccinations did come down with measles...this is rare because the measle vaccination is probably one of the best working vaccinations...perhaps the measles took a form of a different strain? The way I see it, you get over the measles and I rather get that and noro than EBOLA!!!

What I am saying is that USPH realizes that you can take more measures at food venues (no self service, etc.) than you can elsewhere. What would you like the ship to do? Have a gloved crew member push the slot buttons? Issue gloves to slot players (enforcement?)? Sanitize the slot machines after each player?

How you personally prevent getting ill is one thing, but what the ship can do, economically and realistically, is something else.

I would have thought there would have been crew members at the doors to make sure all players used the hand sanitizer as was done at the windjammer. Lots of surfaces being touched in the casino. The amount of attention paid to casino users seemed much less than anywhere else.

We are boarding the Grandeur this afternoon and are confident that the crew has done an excellent job "deep cleaning" the ship.

Our friends, who are on a Back2Back, were put in a hotel last night. They said that they had a fantastic time and that Royal Caribbean did an excellent job with the process.

Are we concerned about the noro...nope...been on several B2B with noro on the first leg, deep cleaning on turnaround, and no outbreaks of noro on the second leg.

Bravo Royal Caribbean.

Don't want to get this sideways on the hand sanitizer thing, but without a paper towel to wipe the loosened viruses off with, hand sanitizer is virtually useless against viruses like noro.

She is an amazing ship with a hard working crew who remained cheerful while trying hard to constantly clean surfaces, railings, walls and even pens! Have a wonderful noro-free cruise

The ships do the best they can, no doubt. But an individual who is going to be frequenting the casino can bring their own individually wrapped wipes with them for sure. The cruise line could make those individually wrapped wipes available if they felt the need as well -- but cruisers could bring them with them for sure. It is a personal issue.

I am not a casino goer very much....I walk through, not spend much time in it.

Alcohol wipes have been available in every casino, on every ship that I have sailed.

I have not seen any hand wipes in a ship casino since the slot machines stopped paying out in coins. They used to have them at the cashier's cage but haven't seen them in ages.

Then it is up to the cruiser.....for me, not a problem.....the salt water in the pool kills the germs I am near, along with common sense personal care behavior.

I bring my own individually wrapped hand wipes with me everywhere on the ship. I always have one in my pocket. When I go to the buffet, I use both the hand sanitizer that they offer and I also use my handwipe before I eat. I don't know why everyone doesn't do this. I've also seen people leave the restroom without washing their hands. It's disgusting and I don't understand why they don't wash.

I also bring Clorox wipes with me onto the ship. I know the crew does an excellent job at disinfecting, but I feel better if I wipe down everything in our room when we first get there. Doorknobs, phone, tv remote, faucet handles, toilet flush button...everthing than can be wiped down, will be wiped lol.

I just came off of the 1/24 sailing and was unfortunately one of the 200 who became ill...despite obsessively washing hands and slathering myself in hand sanitizer. While it was certainly no fun being sick, I have to say that the crew did a PHENOMENAL job. They had to put in so many extra hours yet still managed to be friendly, attentive, & enthusiastic!

It certainly was far from a perfect cruise, having to skip Labadee and return early, but I can still say that despite it all, I had a great vacation! It's all in the attitude, and we chose to have a good one and enjoy the time we had onboard and in port, even if it was cut short.

We may sound a little OCD but when we get in our room the first thing we do is grab the Lysol wipes we bring along in each hand. Then proceed to go through the room touching everything you would normally touch during the cruise. Handles, phone, tv remote, magazines.. everything. Is it a little over the top? Probably but you never know.

We do the exact same thing. Although it didn't help us with this sailing. But you know what they say about an ounce of prevention...

I know there have been oodles of threads about sanitizers and Noro. Aren't the alcohol type sanitizers less effective and the better ones are Clorox? I switched to Clorox ones and think that is the reason. However, I am thinking about the casino and just may stash a few latex gloves in my kit for playing slots as hadn't thought about the casino being a source until reading this thread. Hmmm just have to be mindful I guess.

Um... no. Saltwater is NOT an effective disinfectant. It is decent at killing bacteria but is absolutely ineffective against viruses. Also some things like Cryptosporidium can live for several days in saltwater and Enterococci (fecal coliform) have no problems with saltwater.

just curious how you still get it, do you think it was in something you ate? is that possible?

I know that they were testing everything on board to try to determine the cause. Who knows if we'll ever find out? If someone who was infected touched a railing, a slot machine, or the touchscreen boards, that could do it. All we can do is be diligent about hand washing (and boy, did they remind us! Lol), and hope for the best. We joked around that the ones who drank more alcohol seemed to avoid contracting it. 😉

Absolutely ineffective is far from the truth. The composure of Noro leaves it pretty susceptible when diluted in a properly protected pool. You also mention bacteria in the latter part of your post. As long as you're not near any incident when it happens in the pool, it would dilute so fast that it shouldnt be a major incident. Additionally, once diluted, it becomes much easier to destroy the virus.

A properly protected pool uses more than just salt as a disinfectant. And it doesn't take a whole lot of a bacteria to infect someone.

Granted onboard seawater pools are in recirculation mode while at sea, but the statement made above was "the salt water in the pool kills the germs I am near" and that is what I was disputing.

FYI....You don't get NORO "from something you ate"....

Very true...but they WERE testing food sources to see if something had been contaminated after being touched by someone.

Alcohol sanitizers are pretty much worthless against Noro from everything Ive gathered. The Clorox wipes do not contain bleach and I believe a bleach/water mix is the only REAL effective ingredient for killing the virus.

I think I read somewhere that the wipes that contain BZK (benzalkonium chloride) are also effective and are fine for personal hygiene use. Im not sure if Clorox wipes have BZK or not. I do know they are not to be used on your skin like hand sanitizer though.
