Again to each his own. IMO to spend any money in a casino is a waste of money.

Agreed! I think the important thing to know that in Bermuda the public/free beaches are worthwhile visiting. It is not Necessary as on other islands to find a private beach. Going off the rails a little bit St John USVI is the same way if anyone can make a comparison

Many times people visit Bermuda after being to other islands where a private beach is preferable. They are not aware that Bermuda has the great public/free beaches and transpose experiences from other islands where the private beaches are preferable. I have often done day passes myself on other islands. A week or so ago in the Bahamas at Nassau I did a private beach, Blue Lagoon. I have done day passes in Jamaica. I am not opposed to private beaches or day passes in general, I am only opposed to them in Bermuda or other places like St.John as you mentioned.

Charles,

While I agree that it is not NECESSARY to go to a private beach in Bermuda, for some people it might be PREFERABLE. And that is their choice. No need to rail against them for making a choice you would not make. As to resort beaches, there is now another option, but one that can only be taken on the day of travel. The Hamilton Princess Beach Club opened yesterday, with a $50.00pp resort fee for non hotel guests. But they cannot be reserved and are only available if there are not TOO MANY hotel guests. So you have to call the morning of and see if they are available. But the food onsite has been designed by celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson.

It is no good if you can't reserve it.

Good that you posted that information though. My main take is that the hotel has done something great for their guests who did not have beach access before. There is no beach on the hotel grounds, only a pool.

In addition the article says that when available the hotel's beach club day passes can be purchased by Bermuda residents...and that word comes from a hotel spokesperson, not the reporter . If accurate, passes, when available, can't be purchased by cruise ship passengers.

As far as I know, there always was access to a beach and it was just for guests. Looks like they have added to and upgraded what they already had. Many moons ago when I stayed at the Hamilton Princess, there was a shuttle to "their" beach.

Yes, but I believe that shuttle then was to the beach club of the Fairmont Princess Southhampton. Looking at the pictures posted it appears the new Hamilton Princess Beach Club is on the site of the now demolished Sonesta Beach Hotel, later Wyndham Bermuda resort. A different beach.

In the past Hamilton Princess guests could use the beach facilities at the Southampton Princess.

The new beach club is on the site of the former Sonesta Beach. The new owners of the Hamilton Princess bough the old Sonesta property a year or two ago.

In a totally irrelevant side story, we once stayed at the Sonesta Beach and the Hamilton Princess in the same week! We checked in at the Sonesta...then some of the hotel workers went on strike. Sonesta tried to stay open but it quickly became clear that they couldn't operate with the reduced staff so they arranged for their guests to stay at other hotels. We ended up at the Hamilton Princess, and as I recall they provided free water shuttle service over to Southampton Princess, so we stayed at two hotels and were able to use the facilities of a third all in a week's time.

Oh that's right, I forgot about the family buying the Sonesta property.:o

I think that's called a hat trick or a trifecta.:D:D:D

No judgements here. To each their own. I have done both the Coco Reef and Horseshoe Bay. I found Horseshoe to be much more beautiful and the family enjoyed it the most. However, it is very crowded... The day we went to Coco Reef- the water was much wilder than it was at Horseshoe. Was worried about the kids. Not sure if it's always like that. If you have kids, go to Horseshoe Beach. If you want tranquility, a nice lunch (ours was excellent), a pool and lounge chairs, privacy and nice amenities, and a lovely beach, spend a day at Coco Reef.

What would be the best and easiest way to get to Coco Reef from the Dockyards? There are 8 adults in our group.

Take a van located near the ship when you disembark. They are lined up eager to get passengers from the Summit, Breakaway or any other ship in port. The hotel can arrange for a van to return when you are ready to leave.

Enjoy your day.

We took taxi's and were only two. I do not recall what the charge was. However going, we had a really nice cab driver who gave us a mini tour- Going home, the hotel called a car to take us back to the cruise terminal.

Thanks. Did you find there were ample number of lounges & umbrellas on the beach at Coco. If we have reservations will we be guaranteed to get chair & umbrella?

it was an overcast day. Few people at the resort. We also came early. Might not be so lucky this year. Plenty of seating and umbrellas

August 2014 it came to about $48 each way from the Dockyards. I believe they now have a set rate for this run. . . I expect it to be around $50 by now. The vans seat a bunch of people though so it's not so bad if the cost is shared.
