Cheers tipping question

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this has already been posted, but I could not an answer to my question anywhere.

I just got back from an eight day conquest voyage and purchased cheers. Even though tips are already included everytime a server brought me drinks I always tipped an extra dollar. I hit the limit most days throughout the cruise, and after checking my statement at the end of the cruise I noticed I paid an additional $104 in tips. My question is next time I cruise and purchase cheers. Can I waive the up front 15% tip and tip on each drink? Has anyone done this?

Thanks for the help

I don't tip extra getting my own drinks, but I feel when someone brings me a drink in a deck chair, it is worth an extra dollar. They also seem to remember where you are seated as opposed to a non tipping customer, just saying.

I don't mind giving the server the extra occasional tip in cash, that way I know it goes direct to them.

We got the Cheers package on our last cruise and did tip extra. The tip that you pay up front gets divided between the servers that wait on you, whether you get 6 or 15 drinks. That would suck to serve someone on and off all day and get less than .50 cents each time, and nothing on sodas. They do take care of you alot better if you tip extra on the Cheers program and I don't blame them. I don't think people realize how they have to split it. Just what we do, our choice.

Either way

I wish you were sure of this. The only way you know the servers are getting their cash is tipping in cash. Tipping on the check could easily be pooled among the staff. Cash in king in tipping. carry a few ones with you

I agree with this. I've always heard that if you give greenbacks, the server keeps it for themselves.

We've only done Cheers once and we tipped $1 cash per drink. We only got drinks at 2 bars except when we were playing in the casino.

The bartenders knew what we wanted and if I wanted to change drinks, they made suggestions. To me, it was worth the extra tips and from what I saw, the tip went directly to the bartender as sometimes the folio was picked up by someone else and when it included the extra tip, the person who served me was told that it was in the folio and to get it. So, my thought is if it is cash, it goes to the one for whom it was intended.

The Auto-Gratuity is added to the actual Cheers program price at the time of purchase, so it's $49.95 + 15% Gratuity = $57.45 regardless of how many drinks you have. So basically, it's tips covered for 7 drinks if you wanna break it down that way.

Personally, we give a dollar cash per person until we run out of singles, then we add it on the card. That way, our bill at the end isn't so high with the tipping.

On day 1, my first drink at the pool bar, I gave a $2 cash tip and introduced myself to the bartender. Did the same thing at another bar to another bartender. Every few drinks, I'd give them another dollar, always cash.

These guys treated my wife and I great over the course of our 8 day cruise. They'd say hello when we passed by even when we weren't drinking, and when we did want a drink, they immediately took care of us. They'd ask about our days, what our kids were up to, and were good source on advice about the ports.

Some of the best advice I got on these boards was to bring a bunch of singles (and fives) to take care of those who would be taking taking care of us.

We were on another cruise line almost 2 years ago and had their drink package. We found "our bar" the first day, and tipped the staff there periodically. This bar was aft, top deck, so a pretty popular place. On a sea day, I had a seat at the bar. It was really crowded - 2 or 3 deep getting drinks. I still had a mouthful or two in my drink, and suddenly another appeared right in front of me without me asking! Someone trying to get a drink asked how I did it. My reply - easy, I tipped.

The staff makes their living on tips. Any tipping you do goes a long way. Benefits the tipper and the tippee (is that word?) As soon as I book a cruise, I start stashing singles away in my cruise tip envelope. I have that ready to take with me.

Since you've already PAID the tip, no additional is required....and you certainly don't have to tip $1 on EVERY drink!!!

Next time, if you're going to be at a bar for a while, just tip at the end, but not for every drink! You've already tipped for every drink!

On one cruise with some friends while on deck at sea we would tip cash just a couple of ones with each drink order. We noticed that the waitress came by every few minutes to see if we needed anything and we were thinking this is truly great service. Later one of my friends said "I think I know why our service was so great I was going through my cash and I can't find one of my hundred dollar bills I brought I bet that waitress enjoyed that tip".

Think about it from the server's perspective. By day two, they know who is giving out cash tips and who is not. So, there s/he is, standing there looking for someone to get a drink for, since, after all, that is his/her job.

Who do you think is going to get asked if they need a drink first?

And if they have gotten one or two tips from you, then they HAVE to come back regularly, lest they get a little slow and come back to find you tipping another server.

The tip included in the CHEERS! programs gets the servers paid. The (even occasional) extra tip get you served first and most often.

Sounds like a win-win for just a few extra bucks to me!
