I know its expensive but tats a good idea to bring some snacks and water with us. We keep telling the kids its a recognizance mission for us to see if it would be fun for them to go to as a family vacation. I don't think they're buying it though :D

I think we will have a blast at the waterpark...

Yeah but it seems like bringing snacks would infringe on the fun of eating on the ship and in the ships designated areas

? We bring snacks that are for excursions. I guess we could eat them on the ship, but never felt the need, since there is always food available. I'd much rather drop $100+ on an excursion that had really fun featuress, than one that offered a so so destination with food and drink (I can just stay on the. Ship for that, since we purchase the drink package).

Have done Blackbeards Cay-now Balmoral Island

Have done Blue Lagoon, on a very cold day.

Have done Melia's twice (when it was the Sheritan) LOVED IT! Loved the pools!

But you asked what are we going to do this time-

The Pirate Museum,

an authentic Bahamian Restaurant

and a bit of a walk about.

If it's raining-we may just go back to sleep.

If for some reason we miss HMC, then back to Melia. There is a man made reef and some decent snorkeling-I don't normally snorkel in the Bahamas, I save that for the Western Caribbean.

Cruise happy!

Am I the only one that's afraid of missing the ship? I would love to go off independently but I'm so scared. Any good tips? I usually end up doing a ship booked excursion.

Nassau is very easy to do self guided and if you stay on the beaten path you will be fine! Especially if you just want to do a beach! Just give yourself ample time to get back if you are worried, like make sure you are back on the ship 1.5 hrs before all aboard

We were deciding between Junkanoo Beach with shopping/browsing or doing the Blue Lagoon excursion (just beach - not dolphin encounter). We decided to go for the Blue Lagoon. It's only 4hrs and $$, but we wanted to enjoy and look forward to our time instead of just having Bahamas be a stop over (although I'm sure the free beach is fine too).

I did the pirate museum about 10 years ago and thought it was interesting and a lot of fun. If you find history to be interesting then you will really enjoy it. Have fun!

Getting off the ship and doing your own thing is great..much cheaper and can go back to the ship whenever you want. Nothing to worry about at all.

I have been lucky enough for my cruises twice to stay in Nassau overnight and enjoy the nightlife...amazing times.

The 5x I have been there I have enjoyed Junkanoo beach...free to use. Bar there has 4shots AND 4 beer for $10 the last time I was there in April. Can't beat that!

Thank you, and yes I do enjoy history. Most of my cruises have been western Caribbean, we did a great history/nature museum in Belize, Uxmal in Mexico, doing Chichen Itza this January coming up-but sometimes my cruising is simply to relax and chill and find out about the place I am going. I have never thought of the Bahamas as being "full of history" but it really really is!

For those of you who have enjoyed the Hilton, how is the snorkeling there? I saw on one site that they have a snorkeling tour available. Has anyone ever done it? Would you recommend it? Thanks. :)

I would say snorkeling wouldn't be best there. Too close to the port but I haven't done it before so maybe my assumption is wrong

We were in Nassau last weekend and I noted as we docked that the Hilton is a hotel near the port with it's "beach" right on the water [not ocean] very close to where the ships dock. I'd stay clear of any water that boats regularly dock in...it's not the cleanest for a beach visit, and you can forget snorkeling. If you truly want a ocean beach experience, try the hotel located next to Atlantis. Years ago, you could book an inexpensive room and be allowed access to the watermark at Atlantis [please correct me if this outdated info]. Not sure if this is still the case, but for a family of 4, it cuts the price in half. Then just an inexpensive taxi ride and you are all set. Depending on the season, you can sometimes just book an inexpensive room at Atlantis, then get the wrist bands for the water park. Still less than the ship's excursion.

Fun Things for Kids To Do -- still searching.... for Dad, Mom, 10yr old son. Ship docked 12n-7pm in January. Trying to be more positive about Nassau. Any more advice is appreciated.

First Choice -- Thinking we will wait until the ship docks, then decide what to do. If nice weather, go to a beach (Junkanoo close to the port or Melia Resort at Cable Beach).... or take the Jitney bus to the Fish Fry area for lunch and maybe the Pirates of Nassau Museum or Ardasta Gardens and Zoo.... and maybe come back to our ship early and enjoy the ship slides, pool, and spa since it will be our last day before the cruise returns to Miami.

Atlantis -- I know Atlantis is popular but I'm not sure spending that much money ($468 through ship, $314 through Comfort Suites) is worth it if weather could be an issue (too cool to enjoy the slides/water or thunderstorms shut it down) and if I have to deal with long lines for slides (if it is crowded) for a limited amount of time. The Digs aquarium is not important for us - we have an aquarium like that at home.

Blue Lagoon -- A lot less expensive than Atlantis $125 (2 adults, 1 child) includes lunch. Looks like fun with the inflatable slides but $15 extra charge per person for that. And extra charge to use kayaks.... another money pit with endless extra charges? Reviews are mixed. Our ship is docked 12n-7pm but the excursion start time is not until 1:30 and it's a 45 minute boat ride to get there. Doesn't sound like it leaves much time at Blue Lagoon.

Beach -- I like this idea because we can wait until we get to Nassau and see what the weather is like... hot day, go to beach. If cool weather, do something else. Went to Melia Resort on Cable Beach last time and that was nice - did not buy the day pass, just used their bathrooms and the public beach for free. For Melia Resort $75 for day passes includes chairs with waiter service and use of the pools - that sounds good. For Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island, the Atlantis beach excursion is $233 but doesn't include food/drinks. RIU resort includes pools, food, drinks for $200.

I'm in Nassau during Christmas week. Ship docks at 1:30PM until midnight. I'm travelling with my daughter and her three teens and tweens. It gets dark early so it doesn't make sense to spend $$$$ for a day pass. I would like to go to Atlantis to see the place and perhaps the aquarium. The shops and the market probably close early and I understand it may not be a safe area to wander in the evening, so I guess we will just go back to the ship.

If anyone has suggestions, it would be most appreciated.

It's awesome you're going to be in port that long

We've been to Nassau many times but we Two weeks ago we did the Dolphin Encounter at Blue Lagoon - loved it!! Blue Lagoon looks like a great beach and if we go back with a decent port time, we'd definitely check it out.

Did you do this through Carnival or on your own? Carnival only offers Balmoral Island while we are there in January. But I'm worried about the transportation to and from Blue Lagoon on my own.

Will be in Nassau in February - I think I am going to wait till we get there to book anything - Decided AGAINST doing ANYTHING at Atlantis - Yes, it looks really cool, but just doing like how you HAVE to book in advance and PAY IN FULL in advance ... then if it's bad weather (which I hear is a possibility in February?) we wasted a LOT of money - At one point I was going to go there and just shop and gamble but the fact that you can't even WALK AROUND without buying some sort of pass really turns me off, especially considering I would prolly lose money in their casino.

If it's a nice day, I'm thinking of doing Breezes all inclusive for $80/pp - Does anyone have any reviews of that place? Also, does anyone know if we can just "show up there" without a reservation? I think there will be 3 ships docked in Nassau that day, 9K passengers...

Besides the possibility of a beach day, I also want to go to the Hard Rock store and maybe the straw market for some shopping....

Any input or comments are apprecaited....

Can't comment on breezes but have done RIU all inclusive and it's nice

I was just in Nassau yesterday, opted to stay on the ship as the weather wasn't the greatest, but next time I plan to do a water excursion, either a catamaran snorkeling or some sort of water sport.
