onboard credit ....too good to be true?

We are boarding the indy today and want to book an inside cabin for a week on the freedom in November while we are onboard. I called rccl and asked how much obc we would get, and he said they match the amount of the deposit we put down, up to $500! Can anyone confirm or deny this? Sounds too good to be true to me.

I believe they should have said that the deposit matches the OBC they give you. Here is the schedule:

 

•5-7 night cruises

◦Interior/Oceanview: $50

◦Balcony/Junior Suite: $100

◦Grand Suite and above: $200

 

•8-10 night cruises

◦Interior/Oceanview: $100

◦Balcony/Junior Suite: $150

◦Grand Suite and above: $300

 

•11-14 night cruises

◦Interior/Oceanview: $150

◦Balcony/Junior Suite: $200

◦Grand Suite and above: $400

 

•15 nights or longer cruises

◦Interior/Oceanview: $200

◦Balcony/Junior Suite: $250

◦Grand Suite and above: $500

 

Also, you have the choice to take the OBC on the current or future cruise. If you take the OBC on the current cruise, then there is no refund if you cancel the future cruise.

you need to book the most expensive and it's not refundable.

That is true but the $500 is for a suite on an 11+ night cruise. If you are booking a 7 night cruise in a balcony, the deposit is only $100 so your obc is also $100. It tiers up from $50 to $500 depending on category and length of sailing.

Its only nonrefundable if you take the instant obc, in reality you already spent the obc so it has to be nonrefundable :p

All this has gotten me to thinking. We booked an inside cabin on an upcoming 15 night cruise while onboard. They gave us $200 obc for the cruise we were on, not the upcoming one and said we had no choice as to when to take it. A few months later, we upgraded to a balcony at a cost of about $500. Do we now get an extra $50 according to Bob's post? Probably not, but food for thought. and how does that work in reverse if you book a suite and take $500 and then downgrade to a inside?

If you take the instant OBC, then nothing changes if you change the future cruise.

 

However, if you take the future OBC, it should change if (and this is a big if) they allow you to keep the same OBC schedule when you chaneg the future cruise. I've read here that they will let you change once and keep the same OBC schedule. I've also read that the OBC gets greatly reduced if you change the future cruise.

When we were on Oasis two weeks ago, all the promo documents said that the OBC was taken immediately. However, when I questioned the sales person, they did say it could be taken on the future cruise. They seemed reluctant to admit that, as if they are being pressured to push the instant OBC.

It was the last night of our cruise and we didn't really have much of a balance. We asked if we could use it on a future cruise because we didn't have a use for it on that cruise. We were not allowed to do that. We ended up going to the casino and taking the money out on the Sea Pass card. This cost us 5% of the total, but the balance we have set aside for onboard a future cruise.

If I had charges on the current cruise that would totally consume the OBC, then I'd take it immediately too. That way I would not have to worry about whether they would let me change once, twice, whatever.

Same thing on the EN a couple of weeks ago. No mention in the paperwork of being able to take the OBC later. I imagine it is designed that way. There are lots of folks that would not even realize to ask or care about taking the OBC later.

You were able to take it on a future cruise too? We pushed it on our cruise with it being the last night and not needing it and were clearly told no. I wish they were consistent!

I did not book anything on the EN but on the BR in April we were able to take the OBC on the future cruise.

$500 OBC is for cruises of 15+ nights in a suite. $400 is the OBC for 11-14 nights in a suite.

When we booked on board and got the OBC during that cruise, later I was disappointed because it wouldn't be as much as the shareholder OBC and I thought we wouldn't be able to get the shareholder OBC on the cruise we booked. When I sent the request for the shareholder OBC, I was very happy to get the reply that it was applied! Since we rarely, if ever, cancel a cruise, we will definitely take the OBC on the cruise we're on.

 

That's a big benefit since the booking OBC is usually not combinable with the shareholder OBC.

I can report that we are now on the independence and we just booked a future 7 night cruise in an inside cabin and the obc was indeed $50. I asked if we could have it applied to our future cruise, and they said no problem, but warned us that if we did that we could not make any changes. Since the cruise we booked is already at final payment, we had no problem with that. But it's something to be aware of.

You can't make any changes at all? Or you lose your OBC if you make any changes?
