MisterFidgetpants Posted November 20, 2015 #1 Share Posted November 20, 2015 Someone just texted me to ask if I saw the story about Noordam being evacuated in Australia for possible explosives found. Saw nothing here but found a link I couldn't open on my phone.

headhunterke Posted November 20, 2015 #3 Share Posted November 20, 2015 I hope this is just a false alarm. Everyone has been on high alert this past week but better safe than sorry, of course. It's too bad I have to get to sleep now, I'd like to follow this one live. Hopefully everyone will be safe and authorities won't find a thing. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed in my sleep. sail7seas Posted November 20, 2015 #4 Share Posted November 20, 2015 I wish I hadn't read this page one last time before I shut down for the night. I'll be worrying about Noordam all night now. Of course, we all hope it's a false alarm and all remain safe.
Salacia Posted November 20, 2015 #5 Share Posted November 20, 2015 partial quote from http://www.9news.com.au/national/2015/11/20/13/18/vic-bomb-squad-heads-to-station-pier "...US traveller Marc Wichman joined the MS Noordam in New Zealand with his great-nephew Nick, and both men had disembarked for a day-visit hours before the pier was evacuated about 12.15pm. "We have been told that there is a bomb threat on the ship that we're on," Mr Wichman told AAP at the scene. He said the operation was calm and the pier was evacuated efficiently. "Everybody here is really calm. There has been no running around or anything," he said. "We just have to wait here and see what happens. We are supposed to be on board in a couple of hours..." Port of Melbourne Corporation chief executive Nick Easy would not comment on the operation but says the pier is in lockdown. jetfuel Posted November 20, 2015 #6 Share Posted November 20, 2015 TWO CRUISE ships at Melbourne’s Station Pier have been evacuated after sniffer dogs picked up a suspicious smell. Police say no suspicious object has been found but the sniffer dogs responded to the scent while on a routine patrol at the pier, Melbourne’s main passenger shipping terminal. “We have evacuated two cruise ships while we are conducting a safety check and the bomb response squad is on the way,” a Victoria Police spokeswoman said Police were called to the pier about 12.15pm on Friday. Shadie Farah, who works at the D’Lish Fish takeaway shop at the pier, said police told him explosives had been found. “The cops have blocked everything off. They told us that explosives have been found on one of the boats,” Me Farah told AAP. “There are heaps of people. They’ve stopped the trams and everything’s blocked off.” Michelina, who works at the nearby Beacon Cove Foodstore, said police had not told her about the nature of the emergency. “There are a few hundred people out there,” she said. “They’ve taken all the workers off the pier and there are a lot of people just observing.” Port of Melbourne Corporation chief executive Nick Easy said the two ships evacuated were the Spirit of Tasmania and a cruise ship, the MS Noordam. “Those two vessels are berthed at the pier and both were scheduled to depart at 5.30pm but they won’t do so now until the area is cleared by Victoria Police,” Mr Easy said. The MS Noordam is a Dutch-registered cruise ship operated by the Holland America Line. http://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-updates/ships-moored-at-melbournes-station-pier-evacuated-over-bomb-fears/news-story/b4fbffb0df778aa322aa44aa03616fd0

Salacia Posted November 20, 2015 #9 Share Posted November 20, 2015 (edited) Have the authorities found anything yet? Apparently the "safety check" is still in progress. But according to several reports that I've read, the ship has been evacuated and no crew or passengers are currently on board or on the pier. Kiwi Kruzer Posted November 20, 2015 #13 Share Posted November 20, 2015 The other ship at the pier is "Spirit of Tasmania " a Roll on Roll Off Ferry that crosses daily to Tasmania. I believe she has also been evacuated. She carries both passengers and freight.
