Here's another thread which references the Royal board where the Summit is mentioned.

We're on the Summit right now. Very sombre announcement about the incident about an hour ago. Departure delayed about 60-90 min as captain and officers are apparently at the hospital assisting.

2 dead, 2 in critical condition. Many others injured.

We were on this cruise on the Summit several years ago. Captain gave updates every day. Also gave everyone free phone calls to let people know back home that you were ok, since names weren't released right away, and anyone reading about an accident, knowing you were on that ship, would be worried. It was incredibly sad.

And here is probably the worst accident off a Celebrity ship.

If my memory serves me properly this was an independent excursion not associated with the cruise line. Most of those killed were from the Monmouth County, NJ area where I lived at the time.

Hi Don, I remember that one...I think Celebrity actually sent some folks

from HQ over there after it happened.

Don, I remember this accident very well as 12 people were on that excursion and all lived in my community. Celebrity did a wonderful job helping people out that time and I am sure they will handle this in the same compassionate way.

Right, I knew it was Monroe, are you in Monmouth or Middlesex counties. Wasn't that group a B'nai Brith or something similar.

It is important to remember that tragedy can interrupt a vacation. It is a very sad time for the Celebrity community. Years ago a young passenger in St Thomas was killed in a gunfight, vacationers were killed by a whale landing on their excursion boat and a helicopter in Alaka crashed. Life and death affects us all but no words can express the sadness when it affects those who are enjoying themselves on a holiday excursion far removed from any apparent threat.

Our family group of three adults and three six-year old children took a Celebrity Reflection excursion on November 24th from the port in St. Thomas to Magen's Bay beach in an open air bus with no seat belts, shoulder harnesses, and no guardrails on one side of the bus over steep, curvy roads where passengers had to hang on going around corners to avoid being tossed out. Fortunately it was uneventful, but I would not do it again. We were not informed of this mode of transportation prior to the excursion. It is surprising that Celebrity would take such risks with their passengers.
