A Day in the Life of a Crew Member

Not trying to be a total downer but that was basically an infomercial for princess. That in NO way reflects the day to day life of a crew member. Sorry just saying...

ps. I worked on ships (NCL and Celebrity from 1999-2003)

Ditto. My daughter worked on Celebrity ships for 3 years (until 2013) in their Activities team. We would visit her quarters (having got permission). A real eye opener!

Yes! Crew can link their contract with another crew member, and the company will attempt to assign the two people together.

The part of your post that I have a problem with is whether crew is assigned, or can request a ship. Based on the people I know well, they are assigned. Realistically,

how else could it work? Princess has nearly 20 ships. The staffing requirements are very precise. When one first officer signs off, you need a replacement already on board so the ship can sail. It would simply not be possible to do this with a request system.

If (for instance) Grand Princess needs a first officer on a specific date, what do you do if there are no matching requests?

Whether we use the word "assign" or "request an assignment" is semantics.

Obviously a crew member can only have their request for a transfer to a particular ship met if there is a vacancy for him/her on that ship. In one instance I know, a Deputy Cruise Director took a job as Assistant Cruise Director so he could join his wife on another ship.

With officers there are a very limited number of positions on a ship - often just one at a particular rank. It would be difficult to move to a requested ship. With the crew including stewards (that I was referring to) it would be much easier to move to another ship.

The original post that mentioned a married couple on the one ship referred to a women who cleaned the toilets and her husband who cleaned the floors. They were not officers.
