Yarin3000 Posted January 5, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 5, 2016 Hi, Two years ago, we sailed on the Allure for our honeymoon and had a balcony room. At least half the time, I couldn't stay out on the balcony because all I could smell was cigarette smoke -- even when the ship was moving. I should have said something to a crew member, but would it have mattered? Has anyone been successful in stopping troublesome balcony smoking? We're sailing again in a couple of months, with a balcony room again. Crossing my fingers for no smokers nearby. Thanks!

CanadaRob Posted January 5, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 5, 2016 Call security if you want to report a balcony smoker. Thanks Bob appreciate the wording in the reply too! I had made the decision that I wanted to report my neighbour if it was everytime I was out I would report it, but after the first day never really had anybody out so either they got the message or someone else had reported them. George C Posted January 5, 2016 #5 Share Posted January 5, 2016 I would have no problem with calling security, they should pick another line that allows smoking if they want
LisaAtlCruiser Posted January 5, 2016 #6 Share Posted January 5, 2016 On my last cruise there was a balcony smoker. It was a few doors up from me but the smoke definitely hit my balcony. When they saw me counting and recounting balconies between us - they never smoked again. I didn't report them but would have if they were out there again. Esmerelda Posted January 5, 2016 #9 Share Posted January 5, 2016 Take a quick video if you have good natural light AND try to pinpoint their balcony, and call security.
Midwestgal Posted January 5, 2016 #10 Share Posted January 5, 2016 Two years ago it wouldn't of mattered if you called , they were doing nothing wrong.... smoking was allowed on the balcony. As someone mentioned it has since changed and smoking is no longer allowed. If your bothered by someone smoking on their balcony this cruise call and report it. CVU Posted January 6, 2016 #15 Share Posted January 6, 2016 (edited) Good luck though, some ships are not very good at enforcing the rule.:( Had issues since Jan. when it went into effect with smokers on balconies around us. Sometimes they did something about it on our cruise and sometimes not a thing. Even with calling GS and telling the Room att. I think a photo is the only way to get some action. Plus, calling the Front Desk and telling your room attendant. RCL seems to resist putting a No Smoking decal on the balcony. Also, at Muster they do not mention the balcony No Smoking rule. This is the very best time to inform ALL passengers as they are hopefully listening to the instructions then? It is mentioned on the PA announcement before Muster- which many may not hear. They have a decal on the cabin door but not on the balcony anywhere, so passengers-- unless they read the fine print on the back of the Head Officers page in the cabin or in the Compass, won't be aware of the smoking rule. The room att. try to tell them in their Introduction Day 1 of these rules. Edited January 6, 2016 by CVU
CruisesOnMyMind Posted January 6, 2016 #16 Share Posted January 6, 2016 (edited) On our cruise on the Serenade last Oct. we noticed every time we opened up the safe a terrible smoke smell came out of it. My jewel case did take on the air of smoke.....yuk.... Our brilliant deduction was that the previous cabin mates were smoking on the balcony (room did not smell as smoke) and then put their ashtray in the safe to hide it. Had our room attendant come in and he indeed did smell it. Sneaky sneaky....... Edited January 6, 2016 by CruisesOnMyMind

Rare Neeny12 Posted January 6, 2016 #20 Share Posted January 6, 2016 Definitely report the smoking. When we cruised on Celebrity Reflection a couple of years ago, it was only allowed in designated areas. What alarmed me is that we found a cigarette butt on our balcony. I took a photo, informed our steward and customer service. You see we had breakfasted on our balcony a couple of times and throwing a cigarette can cause a fire on another balcony especially if people put garments out to dry (also not supposed to do) or as in our case we had breakfast and the napkins could have caught. We were on Allure this past spring and smoking is not allowed on balconies. My daughter, a smoker, usually went down to the smoking area of the casino or went to the designated smoking areas. We hung our bathing suits and any hand washables to dry inside the cabin.
WaveSplasher Posted January 6, 2016 #21 Share Posted January 6, 2016 (edited) Erm... On my cruise, there is at least 2 non-smoking cards with signage in the cabin once you enter it on the first day of the cruise. 1 card is displayed on the bed, the other on the coffee table. It was a balcony stateroom. Edited January 6, 2016 by WaveSplasher
MommaBear55 Posted January 6, 2016 #22 Share Posted January 6, 2016 Each cruise I have taken since the ban went in effect has had fewer balcony smokers. In fact, this last cruise I smelled no smoke at any time. The times I have smelled it I have called guest services and it has been taken care off. sr4mjc Posted January 6, 2016 #23 Share Posted January 6, 2016 (edited) On the Jewel recently, we had a few incidents of smoking next door, on the aft. I let it go the first time, wanted to see how frequently it was going to be. The second time I mentioned it to my cabin steward. She said her supervisor had already talked to them, as she had found butts in their toilet. She told me a few days later that they were presented with a $500 charge, for two fines. They tried to say 'they didn't smoke, their friends used their balcony.' Edited January 6, 2016 by sr4mjc
Rare BillOh Posted January 6, 2016 #24 Share Posted January 6, 2016 It's not always "no worries". Smoking on the balcony has still been an issue on every one of our cruises since the change in policy. You must have really bad luck! Let me start by saying I'm a militant anti-smoker and helped pass laws in Ohio making smoking in public indoor places illegal. Before the rule change I never had a problem with not getting any use of my balcony. If a smoker was at the railing and upwind, I came back in 5 minutes. No doubt some people had more severe issues, but not me. Since the change, I have had no problems at all and only one "incident" that I thought was kind of funny. In 2013 we booked the last Oceanview balcony on Allure's starboard side deck 12. We spend a lot of time relaxing on what was then the "secret" balcony. One night a guy who didn't want to walk all the way to the stairs and up to the pool deck went in the corner of that aft balcony for a smoke. It was annoying, but I ignored it. The funny part came when he turned to throw his butt overboard his face was almost in the camera that was in that corner. He actually ran back to his cabin.
