cruisegal40 Posted January 16, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 16, 2016 Not that I can recall. We did have some "sand fleas" at Sapphire Beach one time in about 6 times we have been there.
HeidiHo Posted January 16, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 16, 2016 Don't ever remember mosquitos in either place.
Ocean Boy Posted January 16, 2016 #4 Share Posted January 16, 2016 (edited) My experience in the Caribbean is that there seems to be far fewer bugs around than here in New England during the summer. The exception to that is the number of flies feasting at the Labadee buffets. Edited January 16, 2016 by Ocean Boy
cruisenfever Posted January 16, 2016 #5 Share Posted January 16, 2016 Just returned from a b2b2b on Jewel. Visited St. Thomas twice and St. Maarten once along with several other Saint islands and had no problems with bugs except the usual fly that tried to be a stow away on board. Langley Cruisers Posted January 16, 2016 #8 Share Posted January 16, 2016 We have not been bothered on any port stops, but yes to mosquitoes and sand fleas on land vacations. They are a real bother.
puggylicious Posted January 16, 2016 Author #9 Share Posted January 16, 2016 Thank you all for the replies. We are planning on staying on board and wondered if the little buggers are bothersome on the ship while in port. We have cruised many times, but never this time of year in the Caribbean. kalliekae Posted January 17, 2016 #15 Share Posted January 17, 2016 (edited) there are no mosquitoes next to the ocean. They need stagnant water to breed among other reasons As someone who has worked for and is married to a mosquito biologist at the largest, private mosquito control business in the world, not all mosquitoes need stagnant water to hatch. Some mosquitoes lay their eggs in tree bark in the upper Midwest, some prefer mud, and other species prefer salt marshes. Also, don't forget that mosquitoes can breed in containers, old tires, or bird baths. With over 3500 species of mosquitoes in the world, they are found on every continent except Antarctica. To the op....the Caribbean is experiencing an epidemic of chickengunya disease which is carried by mosquitoes. As for St. Thomas and St. Maarten, there are mosquitoes there and here's a link you might find interesting: http://virginislandsdailynews.com/news/chikungunya-spreads-on-st-thomas-st-john-1.1744428 If one takes precautions by using repellent, you should have no problem.
