Paid too much

Wow, so much hate....how each person decides to spend their money is their own business.....

YES you can remove the tips. It's totally up to you. It's your cruise your way!

Have a wonderful cruise!

My thinking is: don't cruise if you don't want to pay tips.

Are you before final payment date? If so, why not cancel and rebook at a cost you are happy with (or through the way that you saw is cheaper)? Gratuities are part of the cruise price. Either you pay upfront or they are added as part of your on board charges. Either way, these must be paid. Why penalize the workers because you're not happy with the price?

If you're not going to cancel like others have suggested, at least tell the crew (especially the person who is going to be cleaning your toilet all week) that you'll not be tipping them.

BTW, aren't the crew notified who removes the tips? It used to be so. That way if someone is tipped it's not considered extra but has to be put into the tip pool.

You've been a member of Cruise Critic since 2004? You know you should tip.

I hope that's not a recent picture you posted .... along with your first name LOL ..... you have to know Royal Caribbean staff reads these boards.

With 1344 posts on this site I expect the OP knows exactly how the system works and what 'gratitudes' are for.... If you can't afford the 'gratitudes' then don't cruise. Don't stiff the crew.

Exactly what I've been thinking! The staff KNOWS if you have tipped, don't be surprised if your service isn't that great. Though, I think most of the room stewards wouldn't put themselves at your level and would give great service even though they are aware that you've removed grats.

Perhaps just accept that you've paid a little too much and know better next time.

If gratuities are part of the cruise price, that means i have already paid them with final payment.:D :D

I, for one, am glad that the staff knows who removes the tips.

Don't come back and complain about poor service, OP.

In my opinion purchasing a cruise is similar to purchasing an airline ticket. Once I make the purchase of the plane ticket I never again look at the price of my flight. The price may go down or it may go up. I have made my decision and there is no reason to second guess myself.

To the OP: Live with your cruise purchase decision and don't look back. And please don't take it out on the hard working crew.

Yes I do, and I would never remove the tips, but that is MY opinion,. I accept that other people do things differently and that is none of my business [emoji3]

I see your point, but MY opinion is that if you don't want to pay the gratuities, a cruise (particularly on any of the mass market lines) shouldn't be your choice of vacation.

But you didn't even answer my question. There are plenty of things in life people CAN do, but that doesn't mean they SHOULD do. Sure, you can drop $100 on dinner, with full intention on not leaving a tip. You can use the restroom, and not wash your hands. You can go up on deck at 6 am, and place a dozen towels on chairs, to use after lunch. You can push past another passenger with a cane to access the elevator first.

Just because you can do something, doesn't make it right.

I know that tipping is quite rare in Australia - there is a cultural difference and I understand that. When I come to Australia the prices are so much higher and I was told that is because the waiters are paid a much higher wage than the US..............OK, so the "tips" are included in the total costs of meals and goods.

My question to the OP..........if you receive less than good service in a restaurant or a store - do you automatically reduce the bill by a percentage??? This will help me for future trips to Sydney to go on a cruise.

Thanks

If you can't afford the tips, you can't afford the cruise. That's the LAST place you cut your expenses. I have a son-in-law that is the cheapest man on earth and even HE recognizes the value that the crew add to the cruise and TIPS....and if they don't want anyone's opinion on their taking it out on the crew, they should have just called the cruise line and explained that they plan to stiff the crew and asked them how to do it.

Removing tips should be allowed on the first day only. Then the non tipper would not have a room steward, no one to clean the room, no clean towels and so forth.

Denied access to the main dining room, charges for room service and buffet.

Cheapo service for cheapstakes.

The OP did not ask if she should remove the gratuities but CAN she.

The answer is yes, go to the services desk and ask for them to be removed and they will no questions asked, like wise if pre paid ask your travel agent (or direct to RCI via phone ) to remove prepaid gratuities, they will again no questions asked.

This topic is a hot button with many people as you have already seen that will lecture you from their soap box on what is right or fair regarding tips but in the end how you tip or even if you tip is completely up to you.

I'm sure a certain number of cruiser remove their tips ech cruise and either do it in cash or don't do it at all, this cannot be new or shocking to anyone.

I would strongly suggest you look at cancelling your cruise (if not to late) and rebooking.

Good luck and in the end just enjoy your Hoilday.

No, she said in a second post she did not want to pay gratuities:

DON'T purchase any drinks, play bingo, go to the casino, buy any souvenirs, go on any excursions, go to a specialty restaurant, etc....in other words deny YOURSELF something not the crew who will be taking care of you in so many ways. It's not their fault you didn't shop around to get a better price.

I suggest you cut back on something else, like specialty restaurants, shore excursions, beverages. Don't stiff the staff because you have buyers regret.

It seems very odd that an experienced cruiser with over 1300 posts would start this thread. Maybe this OP is unwell or someone is fiddling with her computer?

It is just hard to believe this is a genuine post.

These are the first two posts by this account since 2014. I agree that something is strange here.
