Shipboard Credit

My apologies as I'm sure this has been answered somewhere, sometime, but I couldn't seem to find an answer that was specific to Oceania.

 

I understand I can use my shipboard credit for drinks. Can I also use it for shore excursions? But only if I wait to book the excursion once I'm onboard? The walking tours in the port cities wouldn't sell out ahead of time, would they?

 

Can I use the credit for additional tips at the end of the trip?

I am interested in that question as well. We have a choice of 4 excursions or $400 in shipboard credit per person. I originally thought we'd use the 4 excursions but have realized that booking our own excursions would be cheaper and actually in some cases afford us a better opportunity. That said, would we actually spend $800 in shipboard credit for two people on a 10 day port intensive Mediterranean cruise when we won't actually even be on board the ship for 9 of the 10 days since we'll be touring in port those days?

 

Do we get the $$ back if we don't spend it all?

Depends where the OBC come from

If from Oceania it is use it or lose it

No they will not let you use the balance for tip at the end of the cruise or so I was told

I imagine if you were adding a bit extra to the bill for drinks or spa treatment it may work

No I believe they will not allow your to withdraw the Non refundable OBC for use in the casino

I never tried but heard they do not allow it

Yes you can for shore ex booked on board. I see no reason to book any walking tour with O...too pricey. And no you can not use any extras for tips.

And Lou(sitraveler) lighten up...OP just asking what we all asked once and many of us did not know search then. Looking forward to seeing you on Marins

On our last cruise, we used our OBC for drinks and my husband was able to use it to sign up for a poker tournament in the casino (although you can't use it to play slots or table games). We had no problem using up our credit as cocktails are around $9 and wine is around $40 a bottle and if I'm not mistaken, I believe our gratuities came off of our OBC too.

We too have $400 OBC each for our 10 night cruise on Sirena in June and wondered if we would also spend it all, but when you break it down it's only 80 dollars a day and a bottle of wine at dinner and a couple of drinks each per day and that's your OBC gone.

I wonder if putting it towards a drinks package would be better value?

Depends on how much you drink in a day

You probably need about 6 drinks per day PP to break even

And neither drink package allows one to purchase bottles from the various wine lists. You are limited only to those wines that are served by the glass in every venue. Some folks are very happy with those wines, not everyone. The OBC credit would be useful in that circumstance.

You can a buy a package for yourself & your wife can just buy a drink when she wants it

Are you sure you can buy a single person (of two) drinks package as most other lines see the potential for abuse and only allow purchase by cabin occupancy.

Would be interested if any body can point out in T & C or confirm onboard experience.

Our TA said both people in a cabin have to buy the package.

I am no authority here but my recollection is that when the package was first announced we were told both people had to take it. But later, when it went into effect, it became apparent that it WAS possible for only one person to take the package. Obviously, that leaves it possible for people to take advantage ... but I haven't heard of any cases where that happened. (Which doesn't mean I'm correct, that is just my recollection.)

I think the difference in opinions are with the new O life choice

If you want the beverage package as part of the O life perk then both have to take the package

If you are buying the package yourself either person can opt not to buy the package

Excellent point, Lyn. I wasn't even thinking of the oLife benefits. With those, both people have to take whichever benefit is desired.

If you aren't on the ship for lunch or a light drinker at lunch, then Dinner and only Dinner is where you will use the majority of the package.

It comes back to how much will you drink DURING YOUR MEALS.

Again it depends on if the beverage package is part of your O Life Choice program or not

You are correct that the package offered with the O life is the Classic package ..wine & beer at meals

You can also upgrade to the Prestige Package for $20 pp pd once onboard but then I think both have to do it

 

If someone takes the OBC option... then buys the prestige Package then only one needs to buy it if that is what they want
