gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1101 Share Posted April 17, 2016 At one point we went into a store, and mom bought something. I got some water. We got to the taxi area and there was only one person there. He asked us where we wanted to go, I replied "to the beach, but I am not waiting for anyone". He then told us that he would take us by ourselves, to Frigate Bay that was one of the closest beaches for $12 total. Sure, why not? Close sounded perfect to me. gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1102 Share Posted April 17, 2016 The roads in St Kitts are some of the best I’ve seen in the Caribbean, he told us they were recently repaired. Tons of chickens. They had a large solar farm. It is part of a new state project to provide cleaner energy for the island. I think this is a first for me.
gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1103 Share Posted April 17, 2016 He told us that if you buy one of the newer properties, you automatically get residency for the island. Dear Lord, that easy???? The Marriot is the largest hotel on the Island, it is all the way on the other side.
gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1104 Share Posted April 17, 2016 The ride there was around 12 minutes. We asked him if he could pick us up around 1pm, and he said he would. I think that would give us around 4 hours at the beach. He asked us if we wanted chairs and umbrella, we said yes. So he took us to his friend’s place. The place was a little run down, and the lounges were not the most comfortable ones in the area. The beach is also very volcanic, dark sand and whatnot. But I will tell you one thing, my feet can take abuse as you know. Volcanic sand gets ridiculously HOT!!! I’ve never experienced anything like that, and I am used to walking barefoot on Fort Lauderdale beach deep in the summer. I am not sure what it is, but geez, I learned my lesson the hard way! We were pretty much the first ones there, and the weather there was actually really nice. There were so many sail boats that day. I think it was some kind of race or something. gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1105 Share Posted April 17, 2016 (edited) All the way at the end is the local beach, and it was packed, remember it was spring break. I think we paid $10 for 2 lounges and the umbrella. Right in front of us the beach had eroded and it was extremely rocky. Like dangerous rocky. That said, if you walked a little towards the local side, the beach was perfectly fine and safe. Of course, most people are lazy and they went in through the dangerous side. gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1106 Share Posted April 17, 2016 I was surprised at how empty the beach was, our ship sail away time was early that day. I noticed most tours came to the beach late and only stayed there for about 2 hours. That is not long enough for mom and I enjoy the beach. There are a few places that offer drinks and food. But most of them were still closed. A catamaran anchored there.
gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1107 Share Posted April 17, 2016 A tour with small boats had just returned. You can see how dark the sand is on my foot. As more people started to arrive, they lowered the jet skies. A few more people showing up. See? There's no erosion there. I had the best intentions of going in the water, but agian, it was too cold for spoiled Gambee.
gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1108 Share Posted April 17, 2016 Not my favorite beach by a long shot. Actually, I think it was one of my disliked ones. I enjoy nice soft sand and not so steep. But mom was enjoying her beach day, so that was good. I tried getting some sleep, but I am such a light sleeper that it was a no go.
gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1109 Share Posted April 17, 2016 We were growing a little hungry, and I was in a mood for conch. Please tell me how after 5 ports I was unable to find conch?? Anyway, mom went to look at the menus, and she found one that had a seafood combo. It said it had fried fish, fried shrimp and CONCH FRITTERS!!! Yayyyy! I'll take that! We paid $24 for the seafood, fries, and a coke. There I am looking for my conch fritters, but wait what? NO CONCH FRITTERS! I guess they were out and just gave us extra fish and shrimp. Oh well, what can you do? It was a lot of food, and reasonably priced. Other than the conch fritters missing, it was actually really good. It was actually really nice, the food was even delivered to our spot even though we did not rent the umbrella from them. Nice people =) Then I noticed another ship in the distance. It was busier then since two big tour busses showed up.
gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1110 Share Posted April 17, 2016 They started renting out the jet skies. As much as I wanted to go on them, I was in full vegetative state. There was not moving me from that lounger. It was a Costa vessel. It is beyond me how I thought we were the only ship in port. I guess mom went for a little walk, I just relaxed and enjoyed the view of all the sailboats in the distance. I did regret not brining my tele lens that day. gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1111 Share Posted April 17, 2016 It was soon time to leave, our taxi driver was coming back to pick us up. This is right behind the beach. He got there around the time he said, maybe a tad later.
gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1112 Share Posted April 17, 2016 The local beach. He told us that was the commercial dock. It is still much better than running those tenders.
gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1113 Share Posted April 17, 2016 We got dropped off, and went into some of the shops. Mom offered to buy me a Guy Harvey shirt, but none of them really called my attention. Plus I thought they were a bit over priced. I am actually waiting to see what the selection is on-board Escape. We headed back towards the ship.
gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1114 Share Posted April 17, 2016 And back to the ship we went. I'll be honest and say that all I could think about was that soft bed.
gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1115 Share Posted April 17, 2016 Once back in the room, I knew exactly what I wanted to do, take a long nap. I think I was out for about 3 hours, and by the time I actually woke up the ship was supposed to had sailed already. I believe we had a medical emergency and the ship was delayed a few hours in departure. While I was sleeping mom was out and about. Right after I woke up, the two ships had a battle of the horns. I love those!!!
gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1116 Share Posted April 17, 2016 St. Kitts is a beautifull island. My guess is those were Navigator passengers.
gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1117 Share Posted April 17, 2016 Mom made it back to the room and we both were feeling a little hungry. We went to the promenade cafe to grab a quick bite. Quite honestly, we tried going to the Park Cafe first, but the line must of been 30 strong. There is no way I will wait in line like that for a sandwich. I guess as the cruise evolves the popularity of the park cafe increases. We took our food back to the room, and enjoyed it on our balcony.
gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1118 Share Posted April 17, 2016 The ship was really taking a long time to leave St Kitts.
gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1119 Share Posted April 17, 2016 And off we go! I noticed that there is constant water dripping from that jacuzzi. You can see Nevis in the distance. Another gorgeous sunset, on a perfect weather cruise!
gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1120 Share Posted April 17, 2016 Mom and I left to the solarium for a little while to enjoy the jacuzzi. On the way out we saw Ika, and his manager just happened to walk by. He checked on us and asked us if our cruise had improved after the move. I guess someone had told him about the issue already. Nice fellow. He also asked us if it was our favorite cruise cruise. At which point I answered, I don't know. The Allure is right there, and I was still undecided which I liked best. He insisted the Oasis was better, and especially because it was a 9 day sailing. He did have a point. I took pictures of the solarium bistro menus. Initially we had intentions of going there, but seeing how empty it was every night really turned me down on the idea.

This is one of the best cruise trip reports I've seen on CC. Randy Once again thank you, and I hope you continue to enjoy the review :)
gambee Posted April 17, 2016 Author #1123 Share Posted April 17, 2016 Gambee, I was trying to do a quote on a post, but for some reason it won't let me. In your post about Magen's Bay (Post #813) you asked about other possible beaches in St. Thomas for an upcoming cruise. I can definitely recommend Sapphire Beach. We've been there twice now, once in May 2013 and again in September 2015 and love it. There are beautiful views out towards St. John and the BVI's (Jost van Dyke & Tortola) and some smaller islands in between. Very easy to get loungers and they will set them up for you. I can't remember the exact cost, but think it was around $15.00 for two loungers. There is plenty of natural shade under the sea grape trees. If you snorkel, there is is snorkeling there as well, best is over towards the right where the coral is. The beach itself is a little rocky/coral towards the right but mostly sand over on the left. When we were there in 2013, over on the left it was sand walking into to the water, but due to some erosion, it was a little rocky entering when there in 2015. They have clean restrooms and also a dive shop where you can rent snorkel gear (we have our own). There is also a restaurant that seems to be reasonably priced. I've seen it mentioned several times, but they also serve mahi mahi sandwiches there, in addition to other food. We've never purchased any food there so I have no personal experience with it. Both times we've been there, there is someone walking the beach taking drink orders. We were in Magen's Bay in 1992 on our honeymoon and although we thought it was pretty, we prefer Sapphire. We've also been to Trunk Bay in St. John - also beautiful if you have time to get over there. I was going to wait until you finished to comment so this doesn't cut into your review, but I am really enjoying this one as much as I have your others. I've seen pictures of Oasis before, but nothing like yours...I definitely think you have me sold - I'd love to try sailing on her one of these days. Loved your pictures of her at night in San Juan...I love all your pictures. I'll save the rest for when you finish. :) Thank you for the input, I will keep it in mind as I make the final decision. Thank you for reading for the review, and I am glad you're enjoying it. You should really try one of the O sisters, they are incredible ships :)
