Don't even think of trying to share the Cheers program with another cabin...

Recommended Posts

I wish there was a way to get an accurate count of:

Will buy the package for everyone in the room

Won't ever buy the package for anyone

Would buy individually but not for everyone.

I'm sure you are right in that they think they have it figured out - else they wouldn't be doing it. But I'd be really curious to see accurate numbers. I wonder if they've asked who would be willing to buy for one but not two.

I wonder if they've considered a sharing fee where second passenger pays some money and gets to drink but total package still has a hard 15 per day limit.

They may very well bank on us falling short of the goal but they are still selling 15 drinks/day so surely they are prepared for everyone who buys to use all their drinks?

Or even just a card that gives you 15 drinks to do with as you wish.

But I assume they know their business.

If CCL is like other companies (and I have nothing to say they aren't) they have probably done a couple of marketing studies on the issue. Problem with polls is that many respondents would answer with their fingers crossed "why yes, Mr. Cruise line I would buy only one package and I would make sure not to share it with anyone else, promise!";)

I could be wrong but I seem to remember there was a time (before I sailed with them) that they offered drink tickets in something like packets of ten. Of course this was before Cheers. I wouldn't mind seeing that coming back.

slight difference. they are not selling 15 drinks/day. They are selling UP TO 15 drinks/Day that you can drink and no they are definitely not prepared for everyone who buys it to use all of their drinks at the price point they are selling it for. if that gets close to happen, the price goes up significantly. I am sure they look at the actual average numbers per person and if it goes up, they will raise the price.

My husband and I aren't big drinkers. We are more into drinking beer and between the 2 of us, we'd probably consume about 8 beers between the 2 of us throughout the day. I know Carnival sells the beers in a bucket which I can order before our cruise but then I read that those have to be consumed in the room.

We will be on a 4 day cruise in Oct. on the Valor. So would the cheers package be better (financially) or just buying the beers in a bucket? The cheers programs leaves me confused considering everyone (just me and the hubster) in the cabin would have to buy it.

HOLD UP--if you buy the 4 beers ordered and delivered to your room you have to consume it in your room?

can't you bring a small cooler (like one that holds 6 cans) and use that to take some out with you to the pool if you wish?

During our last cruise here in April 2016 during peak times we had trouble getting service at the pool bar--even with tipping. They had one bartender often at the adult pool bar. Even when they had two--I felt overlooked so I thought bringing a cooler down with some of my room beer would be a good solution for my next one in August.

BTW I am glad I posted this thread---I wish my friends had thought of booking the two drinkers to one room and then switching--that would have been smart--for them at least who were willing to break/bend rules.

When I added it to my cart on the website, in fine print it stated " must be consumed in room or cabin or something like that", so I didnt buy them. I just bought cruise cash instead...lol. I better go back and make sure that is indeed what I read.

Am I reading this wrong?

I agree not to take any alcohol orders out of the cabin or delivered dining location for consumption in public areas.

On our last cruise, we pre-ordered the bucket of beers, which were delivered to our cabin and we took them outside of the cabin to drink at the pool area.

If I can pre-order, I'd like to do so or should I just stick with cruise cash or look into the Cheers program? Im so confused...lol

It does indeed say that, I usually buy a bottle of vodka and it says the same thing. But it's not like they're ever going to question you where you got your beer from. Even with the vodka I order, I fill up a carnival mug with OJ or lemonade and add some vodka and carry it around with me.

They only put that you have to consume it in your room for liability reasons, it's so if you get hammered from the drinks you bought in the room and do something dumb/bad, you can't claim that they served you enough to get you that drunk and sue them for it.

You will be fine. It's not a special looking bottle with a secret logo on it. LOL

People take drinks to/from room all the time. Buy you buckets and if you don't finish them have your cabin Stewart ice them down for the next day.

And if they still run the special on buckets but an extra one when you can get the deal. Never had an issue getting ice to keep them chilled.

No, they say that because they want you to purchase additional drinks when you're not in your cabin.

that sounds like a terrible way to do business. If I buy a package that has a 15 drink per day limit, I'm using all 15 drinks. If they aren't prepared for that then they are the dummies. They can't say "give us 50 bucks a day and we'll let you have 15 drinks a day but hey, please don't."

I find it extremely hard to believe they are that stupid.

They absolutely know and expect people like you to do that. They also though know that most people are not even going to use up half of that limit. The price point is based on what the average person utilizes who is in the program. If most people only got 5 the package will be cheaper than if most people got 15. Its in Carnivals best interest to get the most amount of money from you they can, and its your job to get the most you can for your money.

If everyone who buys this consumes 15 drinks every day the price will go up. I wouldn't be surprised if that happens. 15 drinks works out to $3.33 a drink and I'm sure they're not making much money on that. Many buyers of Cheers won't consume all 15, though, and that keeps the price down for everyone.

Its no different than a casino. A few people do end up walking away big winners. But overall the average works out in the casino's favor, so they (usually) don't care if someone does win.

I remember the drink tickets were for $5.75 and if a drink cost more than that you had to pay the difference.

I would wager to bet they are making plenty at that price point. The servers are working on tips, so their only costs is supplies, the salary of the person stocking, and fridge. I couldn't imagine that working out to an average of more than $1 per drink.

you can find it hard to believe but its actually pretty smart. They are counting on people not drinking 15 drinks a day. that would be hard on many people so they make it look good by touting 15 drinks but the average is probably more like 8-10 for most people. They don't want sharing because their price point will be higher.

so for $50 a day YOU can drink UP TO 15 drinks. if they find the average goes up because too many people are hitting the 15 max, they will raise the price

and if you buy the cheers package, you can use ALL 15 drinks as long as YOU use it and not give it away to others.

One hour wait between drinks??? I can't even hell no that enough! That would NEVER fly! Or bring up a dirty glass? So why couldn't you just grab some random dirty/empty glass to turn in?? C'mon seriously?? Cheers is not as popular as CCL would like because of the everyone must buy rule. I personally hope people continue not to buy it so they are forced to lift that rule or make different tiers (like beer and wine, premium or kitchen sink packages)...

I'm with you. My evening routine was to go to the lobby bar, order a Kahlua and cream, chat with the sweet bartender there for five montes when she would run my card again and get me a second one. In the meantime, my husband would go to the room and get a pot of coffee from room service. I'd bring my drinks back to the room and we'd spend the lady hit of our day relaxing on the balcony with our drinks of choice. Kahlua and cream need to be basically a double to make them worthwhile. Not worth waiting an hour for.

The other lines manage to make a profit w/o this stupid rule. I think Carnival should try it and see how it works. When my husband and I travel by ourselves, they would make way more off of us if I could get the pkg and he could do pay as you go. As is, we stick much more to the free drinks and get maybe four drinks between us w/o the pkg.

It's only stupid from your POV. Yes, I am sure CCL could still make a profit if they changed the rule, but they make more of a profit now. Why would they change the rule in order to make less?

That flies in the face ofas to why they so quickly changed their unlimited drink program to a cap of 15 drinks, even though that was at first denied.

Their continued tweeting with the cost and what's included tells me it's not selling well. They just quite haven't figured out that all their passengers are not quite the same. And there are still so many work arounds, one day they will wake up and realize the best thing to do is sell individual packages, which they do on board, but just don't advertise.

No program is perfect and such tweaking isn't unusual at all. I personally don't care one way or the other since we have no interest in the program at all since we don't come close to consuming $700 worth of drinks. All the tweaking shows is that CCL wants to maximize their profit, which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. The question is what set of rules would do that for them. They are the ones with all of the numbers and are in the best position to answer that question, not individual posters on this thread who are only looking at it from their own POV.

Yes, but not on a cruise message board. We are not actually cruising nor creating policy. We are doing what a message board supports best.

All the tweaking shows that they are NOT selling as well as they would like!! The participation in the program is LOW so they added everything but the kitchen sink to try to entice people who are not major drinkers into purchasing the package. if this does not boost sales, mother next step,is offering different packages (levels) or lifting the everyone must by rule. This "include" everything is a remedy to the problem,,and that problem is the cheers program is not very popular BECAUSE both people have to buy it... Next year, when the market research is in, then let's talk.
