How "safe" is the Room Safe?

Recommended Posts

We've never had an issue with the safe being accessed by others on Royal or Carnival. Whether its a keypad or card swipe type, everything we placed in there remained secured during the cruise. Sometimes we forgot to lock it, and never thought about it twice of someone going in there any taking something. We place our ID, cash, jewelry, and iPads in there without an issue. We've also never had an issue with things being left out in the open in the room, but try to avoid that as much as possible, not from the staff, but those walking in the hallways when the staff is cleaning several cabins, and leaves the doors open. Don't worry, everything will be safe in there

We've only had to have our safe opened once, it was security and he double checked who we were and we had to sign. I'm not sure if it was RCI or Princess, but I'm sure they all would be super careful. I do want to say I take no good jewelry that I'm going to take off. My rings and tennis bracelet stay on and everything else is costume. Not because I think it would disappear from the safe, but because I could have an intelligence lapse and put it down in a drawer or in the bathroom. Other than that, anything you can fit in the safe will be safe. When you're packing up, use a flashlight to check the inside of the safe. Some have a little layer of cloth on the bottom. I knew someone whose passport evidently went under that cloth and got left.

The problem with the safes where you enter a code is that if the safe is open too long I guess, and you then close it and enter the code to close it, it resets the code if you enter it wrong.

Then you have to get the safe openers with the key to open it. We then set up the code again.

I wonder how often this happens. :o

Once my mom shifted the code numbers three times in a row, and she blocked the safe. We called to guest services and within minutes a maintenance guy appeared with the master key and reset the safe.

He took my name and signature in a log after doing the job. I would say it is very safe, even for the same guests.

Hi all,

Fiance and I are leaving on our cruise on Freedom of the Seas this Sunday, and we're going to be bringing a good bit of cash along to pay for pretty much everything (we're going to avoid our debit cards at all costs - we just feel more comfortable this way).

My question is, how safe IS the safe in the room? I'd like to leave our important documents and extra cash in there when we're out and about but obviously it is worrisome. Am I over-worrying?

We have never had a problem.

Have never had a problem with the "code type" safe however on our last cruise on the Legend of the Seas they had a safe which required a credit card to be swiped

We were lucky as my other half happened to have an unactivated cc which he was able to use.

So while we had no issues with the actual security of the safe, it meant the inconvenience of having to carry around a credit card (especially to beach ports) which kind of defeats the purpose of a safe! (particularly in the case of an active credit card) [emoji848]

My first Oasis cruise was in 2012, with DD, DSIL & DGS. Since we had already traveled from Virginia to Florida, we extended our vacation with a week in Orlando. DD insisted on taking possession of all four of our Disney passes, but when we reached Orlando after the cruise, she couldn't find them. She remembered putting them in the safe on Oasis, and couldn't believe she might have overlooked them when we left the ship.

She didn't know that I had made photo copies of the Disney passes and the invoice and payment information. I took those to the service window at the first park, and we were able to get replacement passes. I may be a little forgetful at times, but I never let anyone else keep the only copy of MY important papers and tickets - and I have carefully checked the cabin safe at the end of all three cruises I've taken since the Disney tickets presumably got left behind.

A little off topic but I always photocopy our important stuff and email it to myself before I leave home. I only need access to a computer and Internet to be able to get copies of all my important stuff., including Passports and credit cards.

Any security officer has a key that will open it. I forgot the code once and they had to come open it. I've won a lot of money in the casino before ($25k+) and have been a bit apprehensive about storing it in the room safe for this reason. People on the ship talk. Not that I'd ever have any reason to suspect any wrongdoing. The staff is usually very nice and trustworthy. Generally I keep the funds on deposit at the cage.

I think if the safe was broken into then they have good security staff to investigate and i can't say I have heard of it.

However if you look on you tube (if you dare) then you can see how easy it is to break in.

We had a break in on holiday in Cyprus called the holiday rep who didn't believe us and showed her YouTube. Those thieves were very cleaver as they only took 200 euros so I didn't miss it but our friends count their money and write down how much they take out so knew exactly how much was missing. Lesson learnt. It was a safe bolted to the wall but no top cover so these are easily broken into

Never had a problem with the safes, but this makes me think cause we leave our phones and I pad charging in the room, when were out, and yes the doors are left open. Hmmm

That I wouldn't do-- my devices are either in the safe or on me.

We also leave our devices charging, but we keep them out of sight in drawers or cabinets.

I usually put all items such as wallets, passports, jewelry etc. in the

safe when we first get to the cabin. On my 4/30 Anthem cruise, the

safe was locked when we got there. I figured that the

previous occupants locked the safe with their pin when they left

out of force of habit. Or maybe they left contents in there out

of exiting in haste.

So now I could not open it. I assumed (always a fault of mine), that

I needed to contact security to open it. The first day is always pretty

hectic so contacting anyone is tedious. The CABIN ATTENDANT came by

to greet us. I told her about the problem. She said she would easily fix it

for me. She left and came back a few minutes later with a KEY and opened

the safe. NO SECURITY PRESENT. Said this was always a problem the first

day. Went through a demo with me of entering a new Pin to open and

close the safe. I already knew it since they all work pretty much the

same.

Now maybe she had to check out the key from security personnel or

this was only a first day procedure. I don't know. I should have

questioned the process but didn't. Never thought Cabin attendants

had access to opening safes at any time.

Well that is interesting, and not very reassuring.... I've never been in a hotel or ship where a maid/steward had anything to do with the safe, its' always been someone from security or some other department.

Our first RCI cruise isn't until next year, but on all of our Celebrity and HAL cruises, we've felt quite comfortable leaving laptops, iPads, cameras and small amounts of cash out. Mostly items that need charging.

The safes are extremely safe IMO. If you have to have it opened for some reason (like you forgot your 4 digit combo) it requires a maintenance worker and you to be in the cabin when they do it. Your cabin steward isn't going to be able to get into it unless he conspires with a worker in a different department which would be highly unlikely.

Just any fyi, we have often left moderately valuable stuff around in the cabin (like a watch, or a few hundred in cash, an ipad, etc.) on accident or whatever and have never had an issue in many many cruises. So honestly the cabins in general are very safe. With that said, we use the safe for what we really wouldn't want stolen (passport, wedding ring, other jewelry, wallet).

One other thing, my folks had a two bedroom aqua suite recently with multiple safes and one of them was huge. Looked like it could easily hold a 17' laptop. So perhaps other suites have bigger safes as well on some ships. It also seems like the safe sizes could vary by ship. However, most seem to at least hold a full size Ipad laying flat.

We had trouble with our safe last time we sailed. Our room steward said the safe person could only open it with us there. We leave all our money, credit cards and passports in it. I feel totally safe.
