Though I had a fabulous NCL cruise, beware if you or someone purchases you a gift card. My hubby got me $300 gift card for my cruise, only used $100 of it, 6 weeks later still no refund :(

Do NCL gift cards work differently than other gift cards? When I get a gift card, if I don't use the whole amount, the rest just stays on the card to be used at another time. I've never had a NCL gift card, so don't know if they are different.

I just went on NCL's website and here is what it said:

Q: What if a purchase amount is less than the value on the Gift Card?

A: If the Gift Card is used for a purchase which is less than the balance of funds available on the card, the amount of purchase can be charged, and then the Gift Card can be returned to the cardholder to use the remaining balance for future purchases.

If you don't still have the actual card in your possession get in touch with NCL. I hope you took a note of the number when you bought it and have confirmation from the boat of what you used it for. Then get them to sort it out.

If you still have it get in touch with NCL, give them the number and ask how much you still have available for your next cruise.

I cannot see you getting a refund. Normal Gift Cards don't work that way.

Your trip was on the sky. The sky only does 3-4 day cruises with opened bar. Where did you think onboard you were going to spend $300 on a short cruise? I personally could have spent it in the casino, no problem.

With a gift card you should not expect a refund, you hold on to it until your next cruise. If he bought you OBC, then it takes at least 6 weeks, and often closer to 10 to get your funds back.

Having the card turn it over to see if there is a website to go to and punch

in the required data to see the value remaining and what if anything needs

to be done to refund it or use before expiration date. May even be an 800

number to call for more information and/or help.

Whatever don't leave it sit idle - it is not earning interest or a dividend and

it is YOUR MONEY !

I think what the OP did was applied the entire gift card to her onboard account during the cruise. So the gift card has been spent, and is of no value. She's now waiting for a refund of her unused OBC.

I got a $250 gift card for X-mas from a family member and if you don't use the total within 12 months of issue they start charging you a monthly dollar amount to keep it active, So I used it for shore excursions since I had already booked and paid for my cruise and had like 3 cruise next waiting to be used lol.

I'm sorry you received misinformation somewhere about this, but just to help for the future, and for other Gift Card holders, here are the full Terms and Conditions for Norwegian Cruise Line Gift Cards: https://www.ncl.com/giftcard/terms

For quick reference specifically regarding the fees, here's the exact text copied from that link...

2. FEES

Fees Associated with your Gift Card

Subject to applicable law, beginning the 13th consecutive month after there has been no activity on your Card, a fee of $3.00 per month will be assessed to your Card. This fee will be assessed to your Card as long as there are funds remaining on your Card and no further activity has occurred. If further activity occurs, we will wait until the 13th consecutive month of no activity to assess the fee. You may avoid this fee by making regular purchases with your Card.

Lost/Stolen Card Replacement Fee

If your Card is lost or stolen, there will be a fee of $6.95 to replace it. We will not charge you a fee if you request a Replacement Card due to your Card expiring, since the funds on your Card do not expire.

They do work just like other gift cards: no you will not get a refund but you can use the remaining credit for another cruise. We just did this recently. Hubby had about $300 in gift cards from the kids; we used about $250 and have some left for our next cruise.

That is what I thought, Nita, but the OP has never come back with why she thought she deserved a refund. Other than possibly bank gift cards, I don't know of any company that lets you bring the card back and get money you didn't spend on it.

Okay, I was wrong. Hubby got me a refundable OBC. There was nowhere that it said it would be 6 weeks to receive unused OBC. On Carnival they cut you a check for any unused OBC. It is 7 weeks tomorrow no refund. He got me this as a surprise. Had a pedicure but that's all, also could not use it in the Casino. Just trying to give a heads up :(

Thanks for coming back and letting us know. Did you call NCL and ask where it is, because 7 weeks does sound like an awfully long time.

Did you try to use it in the casino, unless something changed, you could cash any unused out for a 3% fee.

Hi,

I did call a few weeks ago, they said 4-6 weeks. Just disappointed. He was trying to do a nice thing. Lesson learned:eek:
