Not sure what you mean by the OP's "legitimate case." How many people should get suite benefits v. how many people are actually paying for them (by being booked IN a suite)?

 

Only meant legitimate in respect to the aforementioned blatant abuses that NCL had to crack down on (i.e. multiple families booking all adults into one suite and all kids into one non-suite even thought the actual living arrangements would not be this way). NCL is the one who has made the decision on multiple cases to allow parents to book in the suite and children in the non-suite. Note, this unwritten policy only applies to suites. In all other cases it is strictly one adult per room. There are several very heated threads on this subject....

Separately, this has now become one of those classic Cruise Critic threads where an OP comes along, reports a problem/asks some questions, then pretty much disappears as the rest of us hash it all around and beat it to death. :)

 

Last August I had 4 minors booked without an adult and the lead passenger was 4 years old. They ranged from 4-15 at the time.

All the key cards were coded for Haven access.

From my experience ,like Casino Comp Chick we have had parents in a suite with connecting balcony. Minors given Haven access, 13 yo was lead on the reservation first time we did this. The H6 and H7 only accommodate 3-4 , we travel with 5. Don't like H4.

Just an interesting side note; In this thread http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2304280 a post by Sparkygirl where, I believe, she explained how she got four adults into a suite and all the kids in a room was deleted, evidenced by my out of place quote in post #47. Neither do I, I like the H6/BD combo, 3 bathrooms and a huge deck for all to enjoy.

Not looking to get the suite benefits for extra kid (other than all boarding together which we were assured could happen), but this is our FAMILY vacation and neither of my kids wants to sleep in a separate room from us (so having the nanny in with us is a deal breaker for a number of reasons!).

NCL was the one that suggested listening to their recording of my original booking, but the rep mentioned she didn't think they would go back more than 6 months (I made the booking in November), and I never heard one way or the other if they heard the recording.

I've since heard from NCL (though I had to call -- they never called me) that the room can accommodate a roll away. Not sure I'm satisfied as I feel like I'm paying for what will be a very overcrowded suite, but will check fares as the day approaches and try for an upgrade if the family villa becomes available for close to what we paid.

Though I appreciate the idea of bluffing that we'd cancel, our vacation time is too precious to be stuck not going...

Our suite is 10164, and the deck plan says it fits 4, but the rep the other day said no. They gave us permission for a rollaway, so it must not be a lifeboat issue.

We didn't have to "fake" our nanny being underage. There was a special form I had to sign, and it's limited to rooms adjacent or directly across from the rest of their group.

I doubt if the deck plans for the Pearl have been updated. In 2012 it showed 4 people as well. The booking system would only allow 3. I don't understand why it shows 3 on decks 8 and 9 and 4 on 10 - the cabins are all the same size, the only difference is in the balconies. Unless they figure the balconies are larger so they can move the room furniture out to make room for a cot/rollaway bed.

 

In the movie and photos, the small sofa makes out into a bed - for one small person. The table and chair must be moved out of the way to make room for it. The only other place for a cot is where the main table and chairs are or at the foot of the main bed. But that area is not very wide either so there would be no way to pass to the bathroom.

 

I remember in 12, people were trying to book 4 in these suites and were told repeatedly by NCL no - and yes the deck plans still showed 4. I also believe that this was the year they added the sleeper sofas.

 

The same holds true for the SE suites with the exception of 2.

10164 is the room that we were given originally, not the room NCL proposed moving us to to compensate. Looking at the video (thank you!), I am concerned about the tight space. It looks smaller than the other photos someone else had posted. I hadn't thought of using the balcony to store furniture when the rollaway is there, but what if it rains and the furniture gets wet?

Thinking I will have my husband call the concierge this week (he's better at the "firm but polite" thing than I am) to see if we can be moved.

And in response to someone's earlier query, no, our nanny is still coming -- we aren't trying to get everyone in the suite for suite privileges, just want to have good family time on this vacation.

Not sure if you would like this, or if they would do it, but it is their mistake. Would you consider adjoining balconies for you and the kids? I sailed with my 3 (husband did not go) and we had adjoining balconies, and thought it was great. 2 tvs, 2 bathrooms, closed door if someone wanted to nap, more room, etc. and it was less than all of us in a haven room You don't get the perks, so don't know how much that matters to you, but I couldn't do more than 2 in a room, so this worked out for us

 

And yes, on most cruise lines (all except Disney according to my research), minors can be booked in their own cabin. On NCL they need to be within 3 doors or directly across the hall, there is no restriction on balcony. This is the same on RCI and Princess, on Carnival, they can be in their own room, but to have them in a balcony with no adult registered, they have to be 13. This is how I ended up on the Getaway. My kids, were 13, 11, and 8, and I wanted 2 balconies

I'm not reading the whole post. BUT- this booking was made by the OP. THEY cheaped out and did NOT want to pay any single supplement for the nanny. But they think, they are entitled to having a roll away, upgrade etc.

 

They have gotten WHAT THEY PAID for. Of course there should be additional charges if they now want 4 in a room and a single.

There is a key difference in the thread that was deleted (which is odd) that in the booking situation we explored it was four adults in a suite and three children in a connecting balcony or mini-suite to accommodate a blended family. The arrangement of children without an adult 21 years or older in a cabin is only allowable in connecting rooms. We ended up actually sailing in 2 cabins, 1 suite and 1 mini. My stepdaughter was allowed to join us (Dad, stepmom, brother and half-sister who were booked in suite that slept 6 to accommodate having both stepchildren every other night) for suite only dinning although she was booked in her mom's mini-suite with the approval on the onboard concierge.

 

In the OP's case they may be able to have their child booked in the non suite join them at the discretion of the onboard concierge for suite dinning. Sleeping arrangements can't be changed if there isn't the bed space hence why we booked a cabin for 6 when our max number was 5.

You don't say if you have two boys, two girls, or one of each. I am assuming the nanny is a female, if that's the case, if at least one of your children is a girl, why wouldn't they want to be with her?

 

It's your family vacation and your situation of course, but I'm puzzled as to why you would bring your nanny to a family vacation (which indicates that the family trusts her and likes her) but then nobody feels comfortable enough to want to be with her?

 

I guess it's really none of our business, but your kids are 11 and 9... if you and your husband want some time to yourselves, well, there's a kid's club. Why not give your nanny the week off, let her stay home and relax or go on vacation with her friends? Because it seems like trying to squeeze 4 people into a three person room is causing a lot of issues.

I can fill you in on what you didn't read at the beginning. I am new to making cruise plans, and spent a lengthy time on the phone with the NCL person to ensure that the suite room we booked would accommodate 4 people because we know our kids and knew they would want to be with us at night (and because as some have suggested, we feel our nanny deserves privacy). It was the NCL staffer who suggested that we book one of the kids into the room with the nanny as we would be charged more to do it otherwise. We were blindsided to discover that the suite we booked may not fit us all. We would have made other arrangements had we known. ASDJL had suggested side by side balconies, which might have been a good solution were they not now sold out.

Just would appreciate people showing a bit of tact before suggesting someone is "cheaping out". I felt like we spent a fair amount to get what I thought was going to meet our needs, and am now disappointed to know that it won't. I'm not trying to get something for nothing, just was sold a different bill of goods than what I thought I was getting.
