Table hogs

Recommended Posts

There are at least three "free restaurants" on X ships. If one is not available choose another or get in early to get a seat. There is nothing to prevent you from taking your meal out to poolside where there are generally plenty of space around meal times.

Order room service and eat on your own table on your balcony.

Or you could stay at home and be sure of a free table

Let me see if I understand you correctly. Because table hogs will sit in the most popular restaurant venue during peak serving time playing cards with no other tables available, you should eat cooped up in your cabin or carry your food out to the sun drenched, non air conditioned pool area where the chair hogs have taken up all the chairs anyway?

The tables are in food venues so people can sit and eat, not so they can sit and play cards or read all day. It's just common sense and common courtesy to "get" that. I'm not sure why the fact someone is older and can't sit in a lounger makes it okay to sit at a dining table all day long. During dining times those tables should be for people actually eating.

Why would you think I wouldn't come back?

Dining tables should be used for dining and not playing cards all day. I don't care who you are or what your age is. It is just rude.

I very much agree, but also think the manager of the dining area should step in and specify that during mealtime, this is not the place for cards. No one would try that in the main dining rooms at meal times, it should not be allowed in the buffet during meals either.

What really annoys me is in the buffet is there are lots of empty tables around, we make your way to large table as we are a large family and 2 people go and sit there but opposite each other. Why!!!!!

Sometimes we are waiting for the rest of the group to join us. Last cruise, we traveled as a group of 10. We often met at meal times.

Other people may use it as an excuse to meet other people.

Lastly, that may have been the only seats available when they sat down. We've been in that situation.

timing?

I may see exactly that when I walked in, but when finished my meal I may see different. the time I am there, differs from what others see and say as well

Wife and I always sit opposite each other at a table. It makes it much easier to hold a conversation. I see nothing wrong with that .

What difference does it make if they are elderly? Why should they get a free pass? They should be respectful of others just like everyone else should be. There are plenty of places to play cards and not take up room where people want to sit at a table and eat.

 There are not as many places to relax and play cards, if that is what you want. I agree that during meal time you may not want to grab a table near a food location. BUT--other time, the tables in the Solarium are the only peaceful place to play. My biggest problem is people who get on board, immediately run to the buffet, and plop their butts down and wait until their room is ready. Eat, get out, explore the ship. Others want to eat also:cool: JACK IS SAILING AGAIN:cool:

I would generally agree with you, if it were not for having to take our hand luggage with us. I really have no need to explore a ship I have been on several times before, especially dragging luggage with me. I will however happily share a table with others. If it gets really busy before cabins are open we will move to a nearby outside location if it isn't too cold or windy.

Tables in restaurants are for people who are eating during busy meal times. At other times they are available for card games, reading etc. I don't think the elderly have any special privilege in this, and I speak as one who has been a senior for close to ten years, but has never played the 'elderly' card.

There is a place on some ships called the Card Room where one can play cards. I have played in the Sky Lounge. There are other places as well.

Two people sitting across from each other at a table large enough for 6 or 8?

There are MANY quiet places to sit and read or play games other than the buffet or Spa Cafe. The Solarium is NOT the only peaceful place and at some times not all that peaceful. Try the Sky lounge or the Ensemble lounge or the MDR (at non meal times) for a peaceful place to play

I suggest you finish your meal and then go to the Sky Lounge or Ensemble Lounge with your luggage. That's what we do when we have carry on and it works out great.

Correction. Tell them to play REAL cards and walk them to the casino.

On a recent cruise on Millennium, there was a note on the dailies that a certain section of the dining room was available for playing cards between meal times and I saw people using that space. But, I guess there are those who do not read the dailies.

Seating has also become difficult in Cafe Baccio due to card players as well...staff should be gently monitoring this..or the cruiseline should limit use to one hr.. during busy times during the day... that's enough time to enjoy coffee and a dessert...but not for reserving all day...

Seems like they need more space for card players...what about putting a few tbls in the hideaway..where they have those silly swings used as a childrebs playground...?

It would be easy enough to place cards on the tables by the Aqua Spa Cafe indicating that the tables were reserved for diners when lunch is being served.

If people want to play cards or games for hours on end, then there are other options. They could return when lunch is over, go to the Sky Lounge, etc.

It makes no difference how old a person is. There is no reason to be inconsiderate and selfish.

FYI - those cards are already on the tables in the Aqua Spa Cafe - at least on Equinox. As we stood with our plates wanting to eat our lunch at the normal lunch time - nothing was available. There was a line of people in the same situation. People taking up tables reading or groups playing cards. One of the workers in the cafe told us to just sit with with them. We walked over to a lady taking up a table for four by herself reading her book - with nothing to eat or drink on the table. We sat down - ate our lunch in a hurry - and as we were leaving I picked up the note displayed on the table which read " Tables are to be used for diners" - and told her it would be nice if she read the sign - not just her book. Didn't faze her. She just turned back to her book and kept reading. Nice.....

Lucky she didn't give you crap for sitting at "HER" table!

These are two of my pet peeves.

One is a couple sitting at a table for four or more when there are clearly tables for two available. I watch it all the time.

The other is folks that have to play cards or mahjong during lunch hours when it is busy and folks are looking for a place to eat. On my January cruise, there was a group who were sitting at two tables when I got there. One woman said, maybe we should find another spot since it is lunch time and they all poo pooed her saying that they pay as much as the other guy and they didn't care if they could find a place to sit. I'd bet they would be the first to complain if they couldn't find a seat for lunch, saying they paid as much as the next guy and are entitled to sit down and eat their lunch. I was amazed how rude these folks were.

I agree with you!! As much as I LOVE Celebrity and what it has to offer, even with the cutbacks, there is often a feeling of entitlement and nit picking that I don't see on other lines. For example, NCL. We do the NCL cruises for convenience, out of NY or NJ because no flight is necessary. The crowd is more families and less "refined" but very down to earth, not demanding, and polite regarding the chair hog issue.

More people need to just think outside the box....we despise the buffet buton the rare occasions we need to eat there like coming back onboard at 3 pm and are hungry we like taking our food to more enjoyable areas to eat....like the library for one, nice, relaxing atmosphere with tables to sit your plate on....there are surely 800 or so tables on board every ship, just find one that isn't occupied and enjoy it....frankly the entire buffet atmosphere is like a cattle call anyway so we avoid sitting there like the plague...:D
