lstone19 Posted December 7, 2016 #426 Share Posted December 7, 2016 Marine Traffic currently shows that she is due to arrive in Portland on 12/12 at 8:45. That's 8:45 UTC (aka GMT or Zulu). Portland local time it's 12:45 am. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
chengkp75 Posted December 7, 2016 #427 Share Posted December 7, 2016 That's going to require about 22 knots. And that ETA is for the Columbia River Bar Pilot, not the city of Portland, for those looking to watch.

And that ETA is for the Columbia River Bar Pilot, not the city of Portland, for those looking to watch. It's about 2,350 nautical miles to Portland. At 22 knots, it will take about 4 days 10 hours to get there, according to a calculator I used. http://www.sea-distances.org/ Edited December 7, 2016 by sloopsailor

And that ETA is for the Columbia River Bar Pilot, not the city of Portland, for those looking to watch. I was wondering about that bit I'm not so sure. If you're looking at marine traffic.com like I am, hovering over the ship lists Portland Bar Pilot as the destination. But when you click on the ship, the pop up box lists Portland (PDX - same as the airport code) as the destination and the Portland port page lists the ETA as 00:45 local. So I'm thinking that ETA is for the port, not the river entrance. We'll find out Monday morning. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Aus Traveller Posted December 7, 2016 #431 Share Posted December 7, 2016 Have they carried out temporary repairs to close the gaping hole in the side of the Grand? I am thinking they probably have, otherwise it could be dangerous to cruise at full speed.
SheriffJoe Posted December 7, 2016 #432 Share Posted December 7, 2016 It has everything to do with the Grand because IF Princess is fined, Princess CAN fine each and every passenger. If that happens, I'm sure each passenger will care a lot more about the PVSA than the cost of apples. Come on people, this is just discussion. Its useless blather..Princess would never fine its pax, it would be a public relations nightmare...as I stated, its a non issue
SheriffJoe Posted December 7, 2016 #433 Share Posted December 7, 2016 My cruise buddy texted me this morning, stating the ship was leaving for Portland as soon as all the passengers disembarked.Everybody was getting off by 10am, so the Grand could leave Honolulu. Great, thanks

At 22 knots, it will take about 4 days 10 hours to get there, according to a calculator I used. http://www.sea-distances.org/ That's what marinetraffic is showing (which is what the navigating officer puts in), left Hawaii at 2036Z 12/7, eta Portland Bar 0845Z 12/12 (they lose two hours), so that's about midnight on the 11/12th local. I think the ships can do about 12 knots up the river, maybe more on the lower, less on the upper, but averaging 12 knots, I think its about 5-6 hours to Portland from the Bar. Belle Posted December 7, 2016 #436 Share Posted December 7, 2016 (edited) Got home this morning.. flew out last night. They made you reservations and if you didn't like them you went to desk to see if they could change them. That's what the married couple could of done. I had mine changed. MOST people got HNL to LAX then to SFO then a hotel. So everyone could be there on Dec. 8th to keep there regular plans. Some got direct flights to SFO. But as you know always someone else got different routes. They Princess tried their best to help everyone but some not happy ever. The trouble in Maui was on land nothing to do with Princess. I think fun was had by all even with this happening. Only thing the weather wasn't as good as it could of been. I've been on this cruise at this time of the year many times .. great weather.. this time just the luck of the draw. Sure some people were really glad when got to first port. Quite a bit of waves the 5 days at sea. Usually only 2. Doesn't bother me but know it does for others. The crew was very good and friendly. Had many things planned during the day and night. Always something to do. Shows, movies, games, speakers.. Hawaiian actives and lots of music. I thought the food was good of course some dishes better than others. I was on a b2b with Mexico before the Hawaii cruise. There were people on board even then working on the ship. You didn't notice them much as you did in the last week of Hawaii. They do it to get ahead of dry dock. Had only 12 days, now only 8 if they make cruise on the 20th. You want a clean ship. Saw them scraping, painting, polishing wood. Things they can do while moving. Couple of things their doing, taking everything out of casino and putting in a new rug. Getting all new bedding, curtains for the rooms. Plus other indoor things and of course hull. engine and the whatever happen door. Waiting to plan a new cruise. I think they did well with us all, we didn't miss any ports, lost only 2 days at sea. Would of rather cruise to port and not fly home but it's what it is. So 50% off cruise and then other 50% off future cruise that was nice plus fly everyone home, well that they had to do. Oh someone asked, did have to pay luggage, will send bill to Princess. Edited December 7, 2016 by Belle
ansoninc Posted December 7, 2016 #437 Share Posted December 7, 2016 I got home this morning at 6am. Princess had me booked leaving Honolulu 12/7 at 9pm to my home in Las Vegas through Seattle with a 2 hour lay over. It would have been over 8 hours of travel time. I had also come down with a cold yesterday and was feeling crappy. I called Hawaiian air and booked a 5 hour direct flight for last night, 12/7, at 10:30pm There was only one other person flying on Hawaiian in the group leaving after 6pm last night. I do not know where she was going. It looks like Princess was only using United and Delta. Not sure how much Princess will reimburse me for my air fare, but at least I am home with my dogs and a large bottle of NyQuil and a box of tissues. In all it looks like Princess did a pretty good job of dealing with this mess. The staff were always pleasant and Passenger services were patient. The staff at the excursions desk seems overwhelmed when they assumed some of the work load. I hope everyone has save travels!:) Diana

gatour Posted December 8, 2016 #441 Share Posted December 8, 2016 I have been trying to contemplate how the original failure of the tender platform occurred. When this thread/other reports started to come in, I originally thought operational/procedures issues. However as we got pictures of the actual platform and and feedback from Chengkp75 and others. I am now wondering if it was a hydraulic failure. From the posts I have read here, there are hydraulic rams that open and close the tender platform and most likely support the platform in its open position. In its closed position there are additional hydraulic "locks" that fully lock the platform to the ship. If these "locks" have a hydraulic leak could they release? Since the ship is underway and the rams were not really designed keep the platform "locked"to the ship, could the platform open. Then with wave action, could the platform attachment to the rams ultimately fail such that we have had what happened over the last week.
Hunakai Posted December 8, 2016 #442 Share Posted December 8, 2016 Just heard from the Captain that the Grand has sustained some damage to one of its tender platforms, and that we have turned around to make an assessment in daylight. We were in route from Maui to Ensenada, but am not sure where we are at the moment, because they have turned off the tv channel that shows location, speed, etc. we seem to be moving forward (in some direction) very slowly. Anyone land side who tracks the comings and goings of ships have any info as to our location, speed, heading? The Grand Princess returned to port in Honolulu because of damage to its tender platform. It is reported to have taken on some water. http://www.staradvertiser.com/2016/12/07/hawaii-news/damage-brings-cruise-ship-back-to-isles/

Greathouse Posted December 8, 2016 #445 Share Posted December 8, 2016 My husband and I were on the Grand to Hawaii. We made it home late last night. The trip was wonderful and the crew was outstanding. Princess took care of us and we are looking forward to our next cruise with Princess. I did have to pay baggage fees at the airport, but I know that we will be reimbursed by princess or the insurance company.:)

Especially when they already get a 50% refund of their fare immediately and the other 50% as a credit for a future cruise. Colo Cruiser said it best...."Pffftt" indeed. :D
