Rare Terre Posted January 18, 2018 #651 Share Posted January 18, 2018 I actually miss the days when everyone dressed nicely on cruises, especially formal nights. That made a cruise seem "special". These days it is like staying home and eating out. I wish all cruise lines would enforce the dress code in the MDR again.

Sent from my iPhone using Forums I miss the days of the best food and service being in the MDR, when waiters didn't hawk you to go elsewhere to upcharge for good food. I miss the days of intermezzo (sorbet between courses). I miss the days of white glove service, bar servers, and wine sommeliers in the dining room. Anyone remember when there would be strolling violinists? That was special and different. Between the various wait staff, drink servers, etc. you could have had as many as 6 or 7 people waiting on you to make your evening truly special. Now; waiter and assistant waiter running like chickens with heads cut off in a noisy room with average food (at best). Not special. It's up to the cruise line to set the stage for a special event and they decided to cut costs and remove the special feelings. I'm not on vacation to be an actor in someone elses James Bond fantasy, especially not for todays average MDR experience. When Royal decides they want to elevate their offering back to what it was, I'll think about bringing out the suit. If you want to dress up because you enjoy it or want the pictures, awesome, do it. But it's ridiculous to expect anyone else to be a background actor in that fantasy.

Sent from my iPhone using Forums I believe what she said was that she wished the cruise lines would simply enforce their own established dress codes, not that they should enforce people to dress up. Two entirely different things.. You used that word “established”. Dress codes are suggested. I don’t think Royal has any dress codes that are now established. If they enforced their suggestions, it would no longer be a suggestion but a rule. I wonder how many of these people that want to force dress up on others dress up at home? Two entirely different things.. What about me? I wish cruise lines would raise the standard of their offerings. Why is that taboo these days to ask a cruise line to raise a standard? I didn't ask the cruise line for a bottom of the barrel price, I don't mind paying a little bit more for some of the niceties and services to be reinstated. Would you agree it would be nice if the cruise line "upped their game"?

I still wear a collared shirt and slacks. Hope it doesn’t go back to formal required dress. Good food tastes the same, no matter how One is dressed. griffy116 Posted January 18, 2018 #661 Share Posted January 18, 2018 Ahhhh, yes....we cruised during those "good old days" when you carried a formal gown for every formal night and you had a waiter standing almost at your elbow with white gloves ...and a lighter to light your cigarette and to change out the ashtray often during your meal. Of course the ships also didn't have zip lines, ice shows, rock-climbing walls, street parties, disco, teen clubs, arcades, teeth whitening, acupuncture and on and on and on. The cruise lines, as well as the cruising clients have changed over the years. I think we paid more for our first cruise for two people in an interior cabin than we just paid for 2 balcony cabins for four people too. I'm sure there's a line somewhere that requires formal attire and at the very least, smart casual to enter a dining room but I'm also not sure they could fill the ship's cabins. People's lifestyles have changed and the cruise lines recognize it and have changed too. A large part of the experience for most people isn't dressing up for dinner. Milwaukee Eight Posted January 19, 2018 #666 Share Posted January 19, 2018 It will be better when the prohibition includes the smoking lounge ... I mean the casino. Would love for this to occur but I think Royal is looking at the bottom line. They believe they would lose 30-40% of revenue if they prohibited smoking in the Casino. I’d like them to start with preventing the NON PLAYERS from smoking in the Casino and just using as indoor smoking area. I believe these people contribute to high volume of smoke. Milwaukee Eight Posted January 19, 2018 #670 Share Posted January 19, 2018 I've seen signs to that effect, but they are ignored. I don't think they will confront people. I have seen it in the Compass, it says something like.... smoking permitted in the Casino while playing... some Compass have similar wording and others do not. Non player smokers like to stand over your shoulder and watch. I ask pit boss to politely ask them to move, or if seat is open, I invite them to join and when they pass I say something like, smoking is for players only. Generally they will move elsewhere. Two entirely different things.. Exactly! I don't understand why some people have to always leave a smart a$$ comment. I'm saying it would be nice to go back to the days of one or two nights everyone dressed up a bit. There are so few times you get to do that at home. And I don't let what people wear ruin my cruise...I don't let anything ruin my cruises. We have also gotten very casual ourselves for dinner, but do dress a little nicer on formal nights just not like the "old days". Milwaukee Eight Posted January 19, 2018 #672 Share Posted January 19, 2018 Exactly! I don’t understand how Royal could enforce something that is a suggestion? Now, if they made it a rule, I could see that. Either way, they are consistently inconsistent. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Milwaukee Eight Posted January 19, 2018 #674 Share Posted January 19, 2018 Not many times/events that you can dress up at home. Is it so hard to do one or two nights for one week? So, you want to dress up on a cruise because at home there are limited occasions to do so and you want others to do so as well? For what reason? If others don’t dress up it takes away from your experience? Many of us either dress up or wear a uniform daily or have done so for our working years. A vacation is exactly that, to get away from the daily routine. I don’t wear the prohibited clothing to dinner nor do we pack dressy dresses and a Suit. We used too but it gets old lugging around the luggage. We have trimmed down to one large suitcase and a couple of carry ons. I wear slacks and a collared shirt. We have and normally do Chefs Table in business casual and nobody said a word. We had a recent Chefs Table and not one gentleman had either a coat or tie on. johnjen Posted January 19, 2018 #675 Share Posted January 19, 2018 ;p;pOnly if your dress shorts were made from like, a pin stripe suit.....the shorts MUST be creased and properly pressed. Your belt must be square with the zipper line, and your shirt must line up properly with the belt line.
