Drinking water on the Breakaway?

Hi everyone! Cruising in one month. This is our second cruise. The first one two years allowed us to bring some bottled water on board, now we are not allowed apparently rules have changed. I see now that it is for purchase but is there water we can simply drink for free and can fill up ourselves??? We have the UBP but really just want to grab H20 when we need. :)

Yes, there is great water onboard for free.

And you can fill your bottle for free.

You will get a variety of opinions, but I've always found the ships' water to be excellent, whether it was from you cabin or out in the dining areas.

Yes, there are water and flavor juices for you to refill from the Garden Cafe using your mug/water bottle. :)

You can get bottled water in the casino if (1) you are an invited guest of the casino and get a casino drinks card with your room or (2) earn a casino drinks card based on play (2500 points = $12,500 slot play). You can't get any drinks for free just by gambling (including bottled water). And you can't get bottled water instead of booze if you have a regular UBP.

 

As far as water on the ship, it is partially Manhattan's finest as they bunker water in port prior to your departure. Fill up your water bottle from the tap in your room.

You can either carry a refillable mug with you and refill in your room or at buffet, or any bar will be happy to give you a cup of ice water as you walk around

You might then also want to avoid ordering any of the soups in the dining rooms as well as the ice dispensers.

LOL ... many folks in the hard hit Caribbean islands will strongly disagreed in the coming days & weeks about not eating ship's water.

 

East Texas has fallen off the news' disaster radar for now, but I read that some of them probably will be fine with NYC's supply of tap water, unlike Flint, MI.

Water is brought onboard at some ports...and the rest is made by reverse osmosis, which produces the purest water...that's what we use for hubby's dialysis treatments. They will "add back" some minerals, to give it the "water" taste. The ship's water is fine and plentiful. No need to bring bottles....the ship's is cleaner than what's in bottles...which comes from a tap somewhere!

The only treatment that water bunkered in NYC, or elsewhere, receives is to be chlorinated prior to being loaded into the tanks. The only "filtering" done to water onboard the ship is that the soda machines, water dispensers, and ice makers have carbon filters to remove the chlorine, for maintenance reasons, not taste.

Once again, cb, you provide at best partially correct information. Much water produced onboard is done by flash evaporation, not reverse osmosis. Evaporation produces pure distilled water, which is far "purer" than reverse osmosis produced water. They do not "add back" minerals for taste. They will only pass the water through a bed of calcium carbonate (the ant-acid ingredient in Tums) to control the pH of the water produced, since the chlorine used to sanitize the water works best in a very narrow pH band.

Thanks for the info. I remember reading (from you :D) that the bunkered water was kept separate but I didn't remember what it went through before being introduced into the system.

Water bunkered from shore must be segregated until a coliform bacteria test is completed, and this takes 18-24 hours.

The ships water is fine to drink, however I really don't like the taste. I am ok with its use in soups and food and even the ice but I tend to buy a dozen bottles for my DH and I for the week. He doesn't care he would drink anything but once he has the choice he loves the bottles!!

Just bring a refillable bottle and if you need a little taste, bring some of the water additives like IMO, Crystal Lite, Koolaid, etc. or drink the lemonade, flavored water or iced tea that is also at the buffet.

 

Just remember, if you bring a refillable water bottle not to fill it directly from the water or ice dispensers...use a glass to fill it.

Every time we cruise we to get 24 Pack (1-liter) bottles..54.04. This lasts 7 day cruise. I have seen few that re-fill at the Water/Ice Dispensers (Garden Cafe) (n)...I do call a attended when I see this.

I also call over an attendant when I see someone doing this and I'm not quiet about it, in hopes of embarrassing the offender.

There is a sign right there, plus common sense would say don't touch your water bottle on the dispenser head. Maybe oboxious, but I bet they won't do it again, at least around me..

This. I'm not a huge water drinker to begin with. Preferred flavored waters. The buffet has flavored waters that taste good to me. Also bring mio's to flavor plain water. I refuse to pay the inflated price for bottled water onboard.

There is a sign right there, plus common sense would say don't touch your water bottle on the dispenser head. Maybe oboxious, but I bet they won't do it again, at least around me..

Most people who see the sign think that it is a "don't be greedy and take free water" sign. They don't understand the hygiene aspect of not putting their personal bottle up to the dispenser.

 

Hopefully, people will see/understand the reason before they take their cruise.

on our last Breakaway cruise i had a plastic pitcher i would fill from the tap in cabin and put in frig . It worked out great just keep filling water bottle .
