Tipping breakdown

Tips are handled through the auto tip function that applies a daily charge per passenger to your room charge. These dollars are distributed to the many crew that help support your cruise experience, so it goes to many more than just wait-staff and stewards rather than you needing to distribute individually, which is handy. We also give our room steward an additional $20 upon arrival, but that's not required. (If I misunderstood your question, sorry! but I'm sure someone will provide added info if needed)

Have a great cruise!

what is the tipping breakdown for princess . From room steward to dining staff?

Thanks

Are you asking what are the recommended cash tips for those who choose to opt out of the auto-tips?

Or are you asking how are the auto-tips distributed?

Since Princess was the first line to begin rolling out an automatic DSC way back in 2001 the recommended answer to the first question has not been stated for quite a few years.

As for the latter question, to the best of my recollection:

When initiated all those years ago, the first amount was $6.50/pp/pd for MDR staff only (not 'all dining staff' as today).

When the cabin steward was added to the equation the amount rose to $9.00/day. (But even back then $2.50/pp/pd for the steward seemed low).

Then the tips were raised to $9.75/pp/pd to add the Horizon Court staff to the equation.

So you can take that breakdown and adjust for a decade plus of inflation if you wish. As subsequent increases in the DSC to reach the current $13.50/14.50 minis/15.50 suites have come without explanation other that the increasingly implicit language that more and more of the crew depend on the DSC to cover their salaries:

During your cruise, regardless of which Princess ship you choose, you will meet staff who provide you with excellent service. Crew members often rotate to different vessels within the Princess fleet which helps to maintain our high standards on every ship. These dedicated workers reflect our philosophy that all crew on all ships are but one family who share in our success.

To simplify the tipping process for our guests, a discretionary gratuity of $15.50 per guest for suites, $14.50 per guest for mini-suites and club class, and $13.50 per guest for interior, oceanview, and balcony staterooms. This gratuity will be shared amongst those staff who help provide and support your cruise experience, including all waitstaff, stateroom stewards, buffet stewards, and housekeeping staff across the fleet.

We started cruising when cruise lines recommended amounts of tips to be given in cash to the cabin stewards and waiters on the last night of the cruise. With the advent of anytime dining, most cruise lines have gone to a fixed automatic charge per passenger per day. I don't worry anymore about who's getting how much. If someone does an exceptional job, I don't mind giving a little bit extra. I have to remind DH how much we used to tip to rein his generosity in somewhat.

If you are speaking of the split Princess makes to various staff members covered by the auto-tip, I really don't know. If you are speaking about how much you should provide to each staff member below is the text from the Princess Web Site FAQ's. Note the the amounts mentioned are per person, regardless of age, and are automatically added to each passengers on board account each day. In addition to the auto-tip we normally provide and additional cash tips to our cabin steward, our waiters if we have traditional dining, and our waiter if we dine in a specialty restaurant.

For your convenience, this gratuity can be pre-paid online via Cruise Personalizer. Alternatively, you may call us at 1-855-500-7690 and reference Special Services item number 0591. Pre-payment is available up to 2 days prior to departure.

A 15% gratuity is added to bar charges, dining room wine accounts, and Lotus Spa® services. This is shared amongst the beverage staff, their support staff and Lotus Spa® personnel.

Casino dealers and youth staff do not share in these gratuities. We know you will find these services onboard exemplary.

Please note gratuities will be deemed undisputed unless a request to modify is received prior to disembarking the ship."

I was on a Princess cruise several years ago & was very disappointed in a lot of the dining service (some in the MDR and a lot in the Horizon). I registered my displeasure with both the Horizon head waiters and Guest Service. When it didn't improve, I went back to Guest Services and said that I wanted to pull my tips for the dining staff. They told me that the auto-gratuity they add is distributed 80/20% to dining staff/room steward and if I reduced my tips, it would still be distributed by that percentage. So, I pulled ALL the tips and we tipped our room steward (who was outstanding) very generously in cash at the end of the cruise.

When you pull all your auto tips and pay one person in cash, that person has to turn the cash in. Supervisors have list of cabins that did not participate in the auto tip. If a steward had too many people holding back tips and does not had in cash it would look very bad on his performance. The steward would be fired and have to find his own way home if found to be cheating. Staff only get to keep cash if all the auto tips have been paid.

I asked about having 1 person eliminated on the tip one time and was told it would reduce each person by the percent withheld.

Princess does not offer a breakdown of their auto gratuities but Carnival & RCCL do. The breakdown below is probably similar to Princess’s.

Carnival Cruise’s Auto Gratuity is $12.95, split as follows:

Housekeeping Team - $4.05

Dining Team - $6.40

Alternative Services - $2.50

RCCL’s Auto Gratuity is $13.50, split as follows:

Stateroom Attendant - $3.45

Dining Services - $6.10

Other Hotel Services - $3.95

This information was posted yesterday (11/2) but someone must have deleted it.

The confusion comes because the Auto Gratuities are not really Gratuities, they are a Service Charge. Why a Service Charge? Because the wages without Gratuities/Service Charges are ridiculously low due to competition keeping cruise prices low. If you received reasonable service even if not “over the top” then the Auto Gratuities should be left alone. The way to deal with an employee who you feel really missed the mark is to discuss the problem through Passenger Services. All employees are a bit different but the fact that they are still employed there indicates that you may be the only one seeing this as a big problem.

With Auto Gratuities left in place the employee is now being paid reasonably for their service provided. If you are very happy with their service then give them a bonus Gratuity of a few extra $ at the end of the cruise so they know you appreciated their service. This isn’t necessary as they signed up to provide this level of service in exchange for their (low) pay and percentage of the Auto Gratuity but this potential extra $ is really the “Gratuity” which they get to keep since you left the Auto Gratuity in place.
