njmomof2 Posted November 29, 2017 #1 Share Posted November 29, 2017 We are sailing on Anthem for Christmas. Mom has been suffering from hip/lower back pain for a while, and finds that some time on the heating pad improves the situation greatly. I don't see them on the prohibited list: The following are examples of items that guests are not allowed to bring onboard. These and other similar items will be confiscated upon being found. Alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, flammable liquids, explosives, and dangerous chemicals will not be returned. Firearms & Ammunition, including realistic replicas. *Sharp Objects, including knives and scissors. Illegal Drugs & Substances Candles & Incense Coffee Makers, Clothes Irons, Steamers & Hot Plates Baseball Bats, Hockey Sticks, Cricket Bats, Bows & Arrows Skateboards & Surfboards Martial Arts Gear Self-Defense Gear, including handcuffs, pepper spray, night sticks. Flammable Liquids and Explosives, including lighter fluid and fireworks. HAM Radios Electrical Extension Cords Dangerous Chemicals, including bleach and paint. **Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic Beverages I can bring hers and a simple extension cord, without a surge protector. I believe hers has an auto shutoff. Anyone with recent (last 3-6 months) experience?
Clarea Posted November 29, 2017 #2 Share Posted November 29, 2017 I would also send a message to special_needs@rccl.com just in case your's gets confiscated. My wife needed a heating pad on board once, and they were very qucick to supply one with an extension.

She should see an orthopedic MD for a comprehensive assessment, probably including an eventual MRI. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Green Recruit Posted November 29, 2017 #5 Share Posted November 29, 2017 My Mom who is 90 uses a heating pad for her back. We just pack it into the suitcase and she has never had a problem bringing it along. Last time was on Vision in Sept. Hope this helps! Canadianmama3 Posted November 29, 2017 #6 Share Posted November 29, 2017 Not sure about the heating pad. But you could also bring a hot water bottle. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
cb at sea Posted November 30, 2017 #7 Share Posted November 30, 2017 Brought one, and an extension cord. No issues. A hot water bottle would work, too...but we didn't have one! The water in the bathroom gets REALLY hot...so a hot water bottle would work just fine!
Rare JamesEM Posted November 30, 2017 #8 Share Posted November 30, 2017 We ere on the HOS last month and my DW had no problem bring along a heating pad, however you may have a problem if you also bring along an extension cord.
njmomof2 Posted November 30, 2017 Author #9 Share Posted November 30, 2017 Lower back AND hip? She should see an orthopedic MD for a comprehensive assessment, probably including an eventual MRI. Sent from my iPhone using Forums She has already had an extensive exam by both a back specialist and our regular orthopedist, including xrays and MRI. There are a number of issues, none of which can really be successfully remediated at this time (some due to age, others due to time constraints). We think after the New Year, she will probably see about scheduling a hip replacement but that cannot happen to allow us to travel over the holiday, so we're working on ways to alleviate her discomfort while away. Thank you, though, for your thoughts.

I'll send a message to special needs and see what their response is to whether she can bring hers or if they can supply, as well as an extension cord. BaumD Posted November 30, 2017 #11 Share Posted November 30, 2017 I actually bought a 240v heating pad with a Euro plug. (I live in the US) Works great on the ship and at any pre cruise hotels in Europe.

MRIs and CT scans: sort of a curse and blessing at the same time. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Got the auto response, so at least it got there. Will see when/if they give me an actual answer and will post same.
Rare Keith1010 Posted November 30, 2017 #15 Share Posted November 30, 2017 I am not sure about RCI but several other cruise lines say a Heating Pad is OK but it must be one with an automatic timer so it shuts down. I would be very specific in your request and hope you have this kind. Without it, you could start a fire. Keith
njmomof2 Posted December 1, 2017 Author #16 Share Posted December 1, 2017 Well, got a response from the Special Needs group. Good Afternoon, You are allowed to bringing a heating pad as long as it has an automatic shut off switch. You are not allowed to bring an extension cord. If you need one, you can request one from your stateroom attendant. So I'll double check that hers has the auto shut off and I think we'll be okay to go. Merion_Mom said that there is an outlet by the bed, so hopefully she'll be okay with that. Hope this helps anyone else travelling soon.

Find it before Mom and whoever is in the cabin with her choose beds. :)

Find it before Mom and whoever is in the cabin with her choose beds. :) I mentioned to her about the outlet near the wall and she told me that she doesn't want to use it while laying in bed. She prefers to sit in a chair and have it under her. So I'm hopeful we can figure something out. And I share the cabin with her, so of course, she gets first pick of the beds! Thanks for the info. Remind her that Anthem has those low back chairs at the desk/vanity that are not comfortable, so the couch might be her only option if she won't use it in the bed. I hope she can figure out a way to get some relief and you guys have a great cruise.:)
