Rare MicCanberra Posted January 14, 2018 #51 Share Posted January 14, 2018 I've skipped ports. I recall having swine flu off of the coast of Mexico (which seemed fitting) and I lay in bed for a couple of days. I missed a good stop but realistically on those days I was going nowhere. The lesson I learned here was never rationalise a cheap cabin on the basis you'll never be in it. That was out last inside cabin - we now only use suites.Good point about the cabins.:D
Hunter69 Posted January 14, 2018 #52 Share Posted January 14, 2018 There's nothing wrong. no crowds, ship to your-self. Plus you got the booze & nothing to distract you. Have done it a number of times. Been to Lifou 3 times & NEVER got off the boat. love snorkling & have priority dis-embarking & once in Noumea. I did send the DW to Marlene to buy some duty free Booze.. Oh only problem is most cruise companies do the security drill in Noumea at about 10:00. Those alarm are very LOUD. Gwendy Posted January 14, 2018 #53 Share Posted January 14, 2018 Keep thinking I am going to stay on ship, but always go ashore, there might be something different, even in Noumea or Mystery Island. Lol. Generally have a stroll around, come back to lovely quiet ship. Sent from my iPad using Forums

martin jenkins Posted January 15, 2018 #56 Share Posted January 15, 2018 I'll always get off, if only to stretch my legs. Except for one port, Noumea. we go there in march and we are not getting off there either.

Sailing87 Posted January 15, 2018 #58 Share Posted January 15, 2018 My Dad stays on board ship at almost every port on every cruise he goes on. He’s ex-Navy and is on the ship for the ship not the ports, plus he’s not as mobile as he used to be and loves sitting in the lounges with the bar tender pretty much to himself. Mum gets off the ship and does her own thing. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
borntocruiseforcedtowork Posted January 15, 2018 #59 Share Posted January 15, 2018 I haven't done this yet, but I would love to. Off the top of my head, I can think of a couple of port stops I regretted getting off the ship. One time I only made it to the end of the pier and headed back, so I guess that almost counts as staying on board. I can say it was amazing to basically have the ship to myself. Everyone flocks to get off the ship, but very few consider just staying put. There are a couple of cruises I have looked at recently, and had the idea to just stay onboard. To me, it makes perfect sense.
fishtaco Posted January 15, 2018 Author #60 Share Posted January 15, 2018 If I get the Drinks package we are staying on if we dont I might get off at Mystery Island for a snorkel it looks like they have changed it a bit since my last trips. Drinks package on RCI is so hum ha?yes/no? over the price I may have to toss a coin! $1480 for ten nights, not sure we have ever spent that much on a cruise before. Rare mr walker Posted January 15, 2018 #62 Share Posted January 15, 2018 Tomorrow we are doing something like that - a music Harbour cruise. No port stops for us, unless I guess they run out of grog :D Have fun, and behave. We had fun, & behaved. Great day, but very hot. The cruise covered the inner harbour ie west of the bridge & so went into bays etc that are not on 'normal' harbour cruises. The vessel was the 'Rythmboat'. No port stops, plenty of food & entertainment & no shortage of drinks, although they ran out of limes, so not so different to a sea cruise :) Just to stay with the nautical theme, on Sunday morning we walked from Darling Harbour thru the city down to the Quay to take a look at Solstice & then caught the ferry back to Pyrmont - good weekend!!! Lanwood Posted January 16, 2018 #64 Share Posted January 16, 2018 About 5 years ago when we did the Baltic sea, there was a group of ladies who would never get off the ship. Used the port days to have the Lotus spa to themselves, getting their hair, face, nails etc done ready for dinner. At the time I thought they were crazy, given the amazing destinations we were stopping at. But having gone around umpteen times before, the thing they looked forward to the most was booting us all off at port. I'm starting to see the appeal... JohnRoots Posted January 22, 2018 #70 Share Posted January 22, 2018 If we haven't been to a port before, then we'll generally get off and either do a tour or just wander around the port. Either way, I like to get back onto the ship as early as I can. If we've been there before then we'll stay on the ship, unless there's good snorkelling. The only exception is Noumea, my favourite place in the south pacific. We always get off. Sea days are the best part of the holiday. The more there are the happier we are. chesterbear Posted January 22, 2018 #74 Share Posted January 22, 2018 I just did noumea and lifou for the second time in 9 months. Did excursions in both ports the first time. I had a more laid back time the second time. The second time I went to stock up on Perrier at the casino supermarket and took the train. I love going there. They even took my New Zealand dollars when I ran out of xpf ❤️ Oh yes and a man yelled at me to speak French! Lifou - my sister and I wandered around the market and got $10 massages. More than happy to get onboard after that. No danger of double up ports on the next trip. I’m going elsewhere to have some new adventures [emoji106] Sent from my iPhone using Forums
