Smoking on balconies.

We got off the Getaway this last Sunday, March 25th. We were in an aft penthouse suite with large balcony. One evening, the guests in the cabin directly above us were smoking cigars on their balcony. The stench was sucked directly into our balcony; further, ashes from the stogies also drifted onto our balcony. The smoke and ash essentially denied my family use of our balcony. Fortunately, the couple in the cabin reacted cordially when I asked if they were smoking a cigar. They put it out and after the air had cleared we were able to resume use of our balcony.

ok so I smoke - would I smoke on my balcony - no

It's not allowed and I would never be so selfish to do it and ruin someone else's enjoyment of their balcony

what I do is smoke in the areas I can whilst onboard - but I still try and watch where my smoke goes and hope I'm not getting it anywhere near anyone that does not want to be near it so I consider myself a considerate smoker

but on the cruise I have just been on I was sat quietly in the smoking area enjoy my cig when a girl came through, stopped and looked at me and said ' eeerghh stop smoking you are going to die'

This was rude, she was in a smoking area, with alternative routes she could take if she didn't want to walk through smoke, there was absolutely no need for it - it's not always the smokers that are rude and wrong onboard

If you drink now, cut back to more healthy levels. (If the UBP gratuities pay for themselves, you drink too much).

So $18 bucks a day at NCL prices is too much to drink? On vacation? Judge much?

Serious question. What would you suggest a pax do if they report smoke and NCL does nothing?

You are on a ship where smoking is allowed. Becasue there is a tendency for people to break rules, one would have to take a cruise on a ship where NO SMOKING is allowed at all.

I was really really trying to stay out of this thread, to just keep to lurking and reading, but the vast amount of misinformation about vaping forces me to reply.

A little background...I was a smoker for 25 years. Quit five years ago thanks to vaping. Three thing happened once I quit smoking and started vaping...I could taste again, I could smell again (not always a good thing and I could BREATH again.

Does that mean that vaping is healthier that not vaping? No. Not ingesting anything but air is the healthiest course of action. But I’m addicted to nicotine. I’m working on it by lowering the amount of nicotine I vape, but I’m still (currently) addicted.

But vaping has increased my health while allowing two things...People around me don’t have to breath second hand smoke...which everyone appreciates...and I still get my regular dose of nicotine, which greatly lowers my urge to stab people.

The people in this thread saying that vaping is more dangerous than smoking combustible tobacco are ignorant. I’m not going to find and link the articles that refute those posts, but a quick search on any search engine will provide the articles that say so. I know there are ‘studies’ that say vaping is more harmful than smoking, but for every one of those articles, there are a couple that can refute them. With facts, no less.

The problem is America doesn’t believe in ‘harm reduction’. In America it’s abstaine or die. In America anti smoking/tobacco is a BIG business. Harm reduction would put a serious dent in their funding. Not to mention the money Big Pharma is losing out on. Hint: It’s in the billions. It’s no wonder they’re fighting so hard against it.

I don’t vape where smoking is not allowed...for the most part.

I will not vape in a restaurant.

I will vape in the casino even if I’m not using a slot machine.

I will back away from the poker table and hit my vape a couple of times between hands.

And I will vape on my balcony. Sometimes I’ll even (gasp) vape in my cabin!

I’ve never gotten any dirty looks or anyone saying anything or any complaints. I think that’s mostly because I don’t have a device that fogs up the entire room. That’s not my objective. I just want to get a dose of nicotine WITHOUT disturbing anyone else.

Anyway, I’m sure this post will garner some negative responses, but I felt I had to post it any way. If vaping is one day proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, harmful to human health, I’m betting (with my life) that is much, much less harmful than smoking.

read this along with the studies they point out.

https://www.cnn.com/2015/12/31/health/where-we-stand-now-e-cigarettes/index.html

In the most recent study (Feb 2018)

2018 headline: E-cigs can double heart attack risk

In February, researchers from George Washington University and the UCSF Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education found that daily e-cig usage doubled the risk of heart attack. If e-cigarette smokers also continued to smoke regular cigarettes, their risk compounded by a factor of five.

"The finding of increased heart attack risk for e-cigarette use, in addition to the risks of any smoking, is particularly troubling, because most people who use e-cigarettes continue to smoke cigarettes," Glantz, the senior study author, said in a statement. The study analyzed data from the 2014 and 2016 National Health Interview Surveys of nearly 70,000 Americans.

Teens use e-cigarettes for 'dripping,' study says

One reason, the researchers said, is that although e-cigs contain lower levels of carcinogens than regular cigarettes, they have high levels of "ultrafine particles and other toxins that have been linked to increased cardiovascular and non-cancer lung disease risks -- which account for more than half of all smoking-caused deaths."

The good news, Glantz said, is that stopping smoking immediately drops the risk for heart attack: "Our study also shows little risk associated with being a former e-cigarette user."

A week later, a study published in Pediatrics found that e-cigarette vapor can contain up to five cancer-causing toxins. Analyzing the saliva and urine of teens 13 to 18 who had smoked e-cigarettes recently, researchers from the University of California found significantly higher levels of benzene, ethylene oxide, acrylonitrile, acrolein and acrylamide in the teens who smoked e-cigs than those who did not; if they also smoked cigarettes, the levels were even higher.

Another study in Pediatrics found that youth who experiment with e-cigarettes were nearly two times more likely to become established smokers of regular tobacco cigarettes.

Ironworker, when you vape in your cabin, are you using odorless liquid. Do you open the balcony door so vapor can escape?

Odorless, no. But I vape flavors that are faint. And yes, if I do vape in the cabin, the balcony door is open. We usually leave both balcony doors open all the time when we’re in the room.

EDIT: I know what is faint to me or my wife may be strong to another. But really, friends of mine that don’t smoke actually enjoy the scent. Probably because I vape pipe tobacco flavors. Apple Burbon, Sarsaparilla, etc.

So....you don't violate the ship's rules except for when you're....violating the ship's rules?

You're a guest on someone else's near billion dollar ship. Even though you have spent a few hundred/a few thousand dollars per person for a week or so, you should still follow the ship's smoking/vaping policy. It doesn't matter which is worse or better. Vaping and smoking are treated the same by NCL on their ship.

Ok to smoke on your balcony just bring the worst smelling strongest and cheapest perfume you can find go on the balcony spray it all over then enjoy

You've got this wrong............... They need to take that perfume and spray it all over themselves & then get in an elevator so the elevator will stink for an hour or two and the rest of us can cough and choke because of the stench!

No, I try not to judge.

You cut out the part where I said this: "Health monitors should put it this way:". All of those things are the things "health monitors" should say instead of advocating to stop smoking cold turkey, quit drinking at all, etc. I don't care if you drink not at all, drink a lot, or are constantly drunk.

As to drinking, if you are taking a health stance about other people's personal habits like smoking, drinking and eating too much, then you are a hypocrite if you drink more than 1 drink a day as a female, or 2 drinks a day if you're male. The CDC recommends no more than that to reduce the risk of alcohol related cancer and other deadly ailments. What people drink on vacation is their own business, but if you make a case for intervention based on "what's in the best interest" of the person you are subjugating, then you should at least adhere to the same guidelines yourself. Drinking is bad for you. But, do what you like.

What makes smoking different from eating and drinking too much is the risk to others who are near the smoker. A person right next to me can wolf down dessert after dessert and it doesn't affect me, or they get blotto drunk and it doesn't touch my liver. Restrictions on smoking are protective of the non-smokers so I think they are appropriate.

Yep, we favor prohibition over harm reduction. It's stupid, because prohibition always kills people. You have to follow the science, not the activists. I'm not a smoker or a vaper, but the UK's research changed my mind absolutely about vaping, as did the documentary "A Billion Lives" (produced by a non-smoker and non-vaper).

You switching from smoking to vaping reduced your exposure at least 95%. As much as a stranger can be, I'm very happy for you. I am ecstatic about my brother, who quit a 30 year smoking habit and only vapes now, and is much healthier.

I think it probably is harmful but not nearly as much as smoking (I don't think nicotine in any form is good for your heart) and I would not care if you were my neighbor and vaped on your balcony.

Vaping is very popular here in Washington but I don't think everyone is doing it for a nicotine fix :) .

Weed and cigarettes on our escape cruise so much that we had to go inside and close the door

What did ncl say and ultimately do when you reported this?

Stopping this activity would be a service one would expect from the cruiseline for many reasons..

1 is against ncl rules

The other is illegal

So for those that say I'm cheap. Lol. For suggesting removing dsc...um nope...I'm suggesting dsc because the service you expected from ncl was not delivered if you had to leave your balcony.

Disclaimer: this assumes the poster reported the activity..if they didn't...well what is there to say?

Exactly. It's really the only way to get Ncl's attention if your complaints are not fixed while onboard. It's a simple thing to fix and ncl has an obligation to stop balcony smoking and use of illegal substances once they are notified.

Also when removing dsc I suggest letting ncl know exactly why you are doing this and the exact issue that brought you to this action
