Princess Cruise lines discriminates against Single Travelers.

I sail solo on Princess all the time and have never had a problem booking a cabin nor have I felt discriminated against. It sounds more like a computer glitch, which they have a lot (a whole other topic!). That said, let's say it is all about the numbers for them and not a computer glitch. Well, I've gotten some amazing deals with them, even sailing solo, so I hope they don't want to file suit against me for working the numbers in my favor!

Had the same happen to me with MSC so booked my husband with me and he will be a no show when I board.

Be careful with this ploy.

Somewhere either in the MSC cruise document I received or on the website, there was a statement to the effect that if one passenger in a double room does not cruise, the passenger going on the cruise will be charge an addition fee (don't remember the amount) to cover the loss of expected on board revenue of the second passenger.

Wow. This is crazy! I've always been curious about traveling solo but no way if it's like this.

Traveling solo is not at all like this. If you read the OP’s original post, Princess called them back to say it was a glitch and to offer them a cabin which they declined.

Yes, you have to pay a single supplement usually and guaranteed cabins are rarely offered, but solo cruising is a wonderful, enriching experience. Please don’t let one antidotal sue-happy example sway you from looking into this option.

If you haven’t already found it, there’s a Solo Cruisers forum in Cruise Critic under Special Interest Cruisers.

Next I Got passed up the chain to Dale (another 30 minutes on hold followed by a promise to call me back) .

She did return the call blamed it on anew Computer System. She was willing to book me but could not confirm thatPrincess had any intention of changing the policy or fixing the website.

I Declined to book and feel this policy should be investigatedfurther anyone know a good lawyer.

A Lawyer? Really?

I've cruised solo, but not on Princess. Other than the financial pain of the single supplement, it was great. I had no problem booking the lowest cost inside cabin.

Obviously, I can't address whether the tactic of blocking less costly cabins is standard on some lines, but it isn't on all. And if it is a last minute booking, they will often reduce the single supplement--a one person cabin is better than an empty cabin.

While a skilled litigator might have the knowledge and staff to investigate this matter, you will need to bring your treasury to pay for the investigation. Discrimination claims (Is Single a protected class?) are many out in the world, proving it is a lot harder. Also, I would note that Carnival Corporation has a quite adequate legal staff.

I cruised solo in the Handicapped Accessible Window Suite-paid double fare, only 1 set of taxes. Had a lovely time, and counting down the days until 10/22/2018 when I shall again board the Golden Princess at Circular Quay bound for Station Pier in Melbourne. 3 glorious days!

That charge would then be disputed as there is no way they know how much my husband would spend on board. I’m the one that spends (in the casino and in the shops). If it’s tips they charge for I have no problem with that as the staff deserve that.

Thanks for the heads up though. I’ll be checking my account carefully.

I was trying to book a Sapphire Princess for May 26,2018 outof Southampton. I would be traveling alone and know that the Cruise line charges 200% for someone traveling alone. Went direct to the princess website. Found my cruise.

I indicated 1 guest and Interior Room – The web site saidall interior rooms were SOLD OUT

So next Tried Obstructed Ocean View again SOLD OUT

Next Ocean View and again SOLD OUT

Premium Ocean View - SOLD OUT

This seemed a bit odd so I restarted my booking attempt butthis time left the number of Guests as 2

Suddenly cabins were available in Interior, Obstucted OceanView and Ocean View.

Not wanting to believe that this type of intention discrimination could betrue I reset to single guest and all rooms were once again suddenly SOLD OUT.

I called Princess to Inquiry about this and spoke with acruise planner Veronicia who also told me everything below a balcony were sold out. I explained how I had experimented with thewebsite and suddenly she needed to speak with their technical people. 20 plus minutes on hold before they reluctantlyconfirmed rooms are available but they limit the sale of rooms to controlcapacity.

I just looked at this cruise. In a test run, there was no problem booking an interior for 1 person. Pricing is $2278 for interior. It also showed every other class of cabin available for 1 person bookings. Looks like the simple glitch, not conspiracy against solo travelers, was fixed.

If there terms and conditions say that a fee will be charged in the case of a no show, then you can dispute the charge all you want but they would be entitled to charge it and the CC company would not oppose them.

The good news is that the passenger contract for MSC does not appear to contain any such clause. Of course such a statement good be elsewhere in the purchase process.

I didn’t see any such clause but if it’s there it will be “show me” then I’ll abide by it. Don’t understand how they can assume what a person will spend as I don’t even know what we would spend. Do they have a crystal ball we don’t know about.

I have never seen such a clause, but there are many lines I've never cruised. No, there is no cruise line with a crystal ball that can predict what any individual will spend while on a cruise. However, they definitely have both targets for spending and averages for guests...probably broken down by cabin category and various demographics. They know that the shorter the cruise, the higher the per diem spending; on some lines, the fewer cruises a passenger has done, the higher the per diem spending. I don't know what is true across the cruise industry; lines that are more family oriented are probably different than lines that attract an older clientele. But each line knows, and they have strategies to separate their clients from their money!

Like I said, I don't know where I read it.

I do know I was reading about pricing for solo cruisers (my sister was interested in cruising solo on MSC) and I came across the information.

Because I read so often on CC about booking a double cabin and having a no show at check in, the statement definitely caught my attention as it was something I haven't seen before.

In any case, my post was just an FYI.

Maybe this isn’t about a single person being a protected class but about a company that uses deceptive business practices. The message they provide clearly states Oceanview Obstructed Staterooms are currently SOLD OUT. Please select another stateroom type. Which is untrue.

If Today they don’t want single travelers, they lie and say Sold Out.

Who knows if tomorrow they configure their software to do the same if you check the box indicating you are a Senior Citizen. Sorry we have our quota of old folks -SOLD OUT

Or for past guests, once you provide your member number theyl ook up how much you spent on your last cruise in the SPA, BAR, Casino, did you book your Shore Excusion through them, if the numbers don’t add up to their liking. -Sorry Sold Out.

So you better not be a non-drinking, non- gambling old couple who doesn’t book shore excursions in EVERY port from the cruise line because your next.

Everyone should be treated equally. Without Exception.

Whoa, that is quite the post. I've been sailing solo for many of my 30 cruise since 1982, and I'm not getting the deceptive business practices. Only half of those cruises have been with Princess, I've sailed with Carnival, Celebrity, Costa, NCL and Royal Caribbean, too. At 70, I sail for itinerary so stick to Princess and RCI and look at the website, see what is available and call my TA, whom I've used since 2002. I take longer cruises, book way ahead, sometimes certain areas sell out right away but I've never felt discriminated against.

I was under the impression that a no-show would be charged. Not personal experience, but from a CC thread somewhere. NCL sell single cabins - at the same cost (per person) as a double occupancy - but I think they are all internals.

I certainly understand that a no show is charged the full fare which has already been paid. It is just additional charges for items they might have bought had they been on the cruise that I question. You shouldn’t be charged for costs you don’t incur. At least if this happens I won’t be surprised. Better to be forewarned.
